Nationals select contract of 1B/3B Greg Dobbs, option C Sandy Leon to Syracuse
The Washington Nationals today selected the contract of first baseman Greg Dobbs, optioned catcher Sandy Leon to Syracuse of the Triple-A International League and recalled outfielder Eury Perez from Syracuse and placed him on the 60-Day Disabled List (left toe fracture). Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement. The left-handed hitting Dobbs is a career .262 (542-for-2069) with 105 doubles, 46 home runs and 272 RBI in 938 games spanning 11...

Patrick Reddington: Nats need Desmond to get back on track

Patrick Reddington: Nats need Desmond to get back on track
Ian Desmond is one of three Nationals to play in all 40 games so far this season. Unlike right fielder Jayson Werth (.304/.391/.453) and second/third baseman Anthony Rendon (.282/.312/.479), the other two Nats to play in all 40, the 28-year-old shortstop has struggled at the plate (.226/.275/.368), while committing a major league-leading 10 errors. With the primary backup at short, Danny Espinosa, pressed into everyday action with Ryan Zimmerman on the disabled list, Nats skipper Matt Williams...

Matthew Taylor: For Horn, plenty of memories in Kansas City

Matthew Taylor: For Horn, plenty of memories in Kansas City
The Orioles are in Kansas City, and while there are plenty of current storylines to consider, I can't help but think of Sam Horn. It happens to me whenever the O's play at Kaufman Stadium. Horn is one of my favorite former Orioles, and he simply had a way of producing against the Royals. Horn's O's debut came at Kansas City on April 9, 1990. He went 4-for-5 with a pair of three-run home runs, including one into the stadium fountain. His eighth-inning homer erased a 6-3 deficit in a game...

David Huzzard: Time to let pitching carry injured Nats

David Huzzard: Time to let pitching carry injured Nats
With Ryan Zimmerman, Adam LaRoche and Bryce Harper out, the Nationals are missing three of their best hitters, and in the cases of LaRoche and Zimmerman, they are missing the two highest OPS players on the team. While the addition of Kevin Frandsen, the emergence of Zach Walters and the resurgence of Danny Espinosa have improved the Nationals bench with so many key offensive weapons missing, it is like putting a band-aid on a bullet hole. Scoring runs is going to be a daily struggle for the...

Zach Wilt: Examining Orioles' closer options

Zach Wilt: Examining Orioles' closer options
"The difference between Tommy (Hunter) and Jimmy (Johnson) is that Jimmy had a track record," Orioles manager Buck Showalter told the media after Hunter blew his third save of the season on Tuesday against the Tigers. "Tommy does, too, with certain other things, so there's some unknown about where this will go with Tommy." A season ago, Johnson blew nine saves as the Orioles closer. The O's ended up finishing the season 85-77, 6 1/2 games back of a wild card spot in the American League....

Williams, Fister and Desmond weigh in on Nats' win over Diamondbacks

Williams, Fister and Desmond weigh in on Nats' win over Diamondbacks
After falling behind in today's series finale, the Nationals were on the verge of returning to D.C., with a 1-5 record from their six-game road trip. To say today's game was a must-win might be a little exaggerated, but boy was it important. The Nats capitalized on seven strong innings from Doug Fister and a bases-loaded hit from Ian Desmond in the top of the ninth for to beat the Diamondbacks 5-1. Denard Span's leadoff walk in the ninth started the Nats' rally. Anthony Rendon then...

We have a pitchers' duel in the desert (Nats win 5-1)

We have a pitchers' duel in the desert (Nats win 5-1)
We've got a pitchers' duel in Arizona. After scoring a combined 15 runs in the last two games, the Nationals and Diamondbacks are scoreless through three innings. Doug Fister has thrown 52 pitches, allowing three hits and striking out four in three innings. Three of Fister's outs have come via the groundball, which is a good sign for the Nats' sinker ball pitcher. Fister's counterpart on the mound, Brandon McCarthy, has not allowed a hit and has struck out two through three. Update:...

Rachel Levitin: Making do and searching for consistency

Rachel Levitin: Making do and searching for consistency
Earlier this week, Nationals Buzz guest blogger Marty Niland pointed out something I agree with. He wrote, "The Nats need to make hay against the teams they are supposed to beat until injured stars (Adam) LaRoche, Bryce Harper and Ryan Zimmerman can return to the lineup and bring them back to full strength." One of the biggest problems facing the Nationals in 2014 is lack of consistency their overall performance due to health-related issues. This, of course, is a plague that haunts any...

Daniel Clark: Hungry for postseason, Markakis is a picture of consistency

Daniel Clark: Hungry for postseason, Markakis is a picture of consistency
Of all the Orioles hungry for success, none may be more driven to see Baltimore return to the playoffs and perform well on the big stage than Nick Markakis, a nine-year veteran of the club who has never played in a postseason game. As most Orioles fans are aware, it was a cruel twist of fate that struck Markakis down just a few weeks prior to the 2012 playoff run, which was the first time the O's had reached the postseason since 1997. That fateful day came on Sept. 8 at Camden Yards, as...

Stuart Wallace: Advanced metrics show third base isn't second nature for Rendon

Stuart Wallace: Advanced metrics show third base isn't second nature for Rendon
In the face of a position change, Anthony Rendon has gotten off to a solid start with the bat in 2014. Despite a 2-for-12 showing against Oakland Athletics pitching extinguishing his dalliance with a .300 batting average for the time being, the third baseman is still in good shape, putting up a .349 weighted on-base average (league average is currently .310), good third on the Nationals. Currently manning the hot corner while Ryan Zimmerman is on the mend with a thumb injury, Rendon has done...

Jon Shepherd: Say goodbye to Matt Wieters' ash

Jon Shepherd: Say goodbye to Matt Wieters' ash
Before an arm injury put him on the 15-day disabled list and placed his entire season in doubt, Matt Wieters was terrorizing American League pitchers in April. His slash line of .338/.370/.554 had made some wonder if he has finally figured things out and become the offensive wunderkind so many in Baltimore had originally thought he would be. You may have noticed that Wieters was wielding a bat made of ash. This, in and of itself, is not very remarkable. Ash bats are still a common sight and, as...

Orioles recall RHP Preston Guilmet from Triple-A Norfolk

Orioles recall RHP Preston Guilmet from Triple-A Norfolk
The Orioles today announced that they have recalled RHP Preston Guilmet (pronounced GILL-met) from Triple-A Norfolk. Guilmet, 26, is 2-1 with a 5.65 ERA (14.1IP, 9ER) and four saves in 12 games for the Tides since being acquired from the Cleveland organization on April 7. In 2013, Guilmet posted a 1.68 ERA (64.1IP, 12ER), 20 saves and 10.1 strikeouts per 9.0 in 49 games with Triple-A Columbus. He was selected in the ninth round of the 2009 First Year Player Draft out of the University of...

Andrew Stetka: Will the O's be able to weather Wieters' absense?

Andrew Stetka: Will the O's be able to weather Wieters' absense?
The Orioles have been able to stay afloat through the first six weeks of the season, leading the American League East to this point despite not having a fully healthy lineup. Sunday marked the first time all year that Buck Showalter was able to pencil Manny Machado and Chris Davis into the same lineup. Sunday also marked the beginning of what could be the biggest loss for the O's to date - Matt Wieters. The elbow discomfort that Wieters is dealing with is very concerning and something that...

Marty Niland: In era of parity, Nats put disparity on display

Marty Niland: In era of parity, Nats put disparity on display
Parity seems to be a buzzword in the major leagues these days. Much has been written about how the low-budget, small-market teams like the Oakland A's are competitive with big-spending clubs. It was disparity, however, that best described last weekend's series between Nationals and the A's. It played out like a three-day infomercial for "Moneyball," the 2003 book that chronicled Oakland general manager Billy Beane's tactics in assembling a ball club that is not only the two-time defending...
