Anthony Rendon gave the Nationals an early boost in San Diego by celebrating his 24th birthday in style.
The third baseman absolutely crushed a two-run shot to left-center in one of baseball's biggest parks, giving the Nats a 2-0 lead with no outs in the first. Denard Span had drawn a leadoff walk from Padres right-hander Tyson Ross before scoring on Rendon's ninth homer.
That continues a power surge for Rendon, who has now homered in four of the last six games, hitting four during that...
The 2014 MLB First-Year Player Draft continued with rounds 3-10 Friday afternoon. Here's a look at Washington's seven selections:
Jakson Reetz - Catcher - Norris (NE) High School / Firth, NE - 3rdRound (93rd overall)
At 6-foot-1, 195 pounds, Reetz is known as a hard-nosed competitor and a tremendous athlete behind the plate. He was named the 2013-14 Gatorade Nebraska Baseball Player of the Year after hitting .487 with eight home runs, 37 RBI and 37 runs scored in 2014. Reetz was rated...
Ryan Zimmerman's transition to playing left field has been perhaps the most discussed Nationals topic over the last couple of weeks.
Zimmerman has played three games in left, recording three putouts in as many chances. Manager Matt Williams spoke extensively about Zimmerman's outfield play, his future defensive position and the possibility of playing third right now to give Anthony Rendon a day off.
So how does Williams feel Zimmerman has done in left?
"He's fine," Williams said. "I...
On the second day of the draft, which covered rounds three through 10, the Nationals added three pitchers, three outfielders, a catcher and a first baseman.
In the third round, the Nats selected high school catcher Jakson Reetz. Washington then selected three college right-handers consecutively in the fourth, fifth and sixth rounds - Robbie Dickey (Binn College), Drew Van Orden (Duke) and Austen Williams (Texas State).
The Nats drafted center fielder D.K. Carey (Miami) in the seventh round,...

My son hears J.J. Hardy's name on the Orioles broadcast and he starts a chant: "J.J. Hardy ... clap, clap, clap-clap-clap." He hears the familiar bugle music that long ago signaled the cavalry and he yells "Charge." He visits my office and immediately wants to see the "baseball men," meaning a Brian Matusz bobblehead and an Orioles garden gnome (It was a gift, OK? No judging.) He's either a fan of an Orioles legend or of off-color comedy because he plays with a replica statue and calls...

Thousands of youth baseball players and their families will converge on the Sarasota region this weekend for the 2014 Prospect Wire Florida State Finals tournament, with approximately half of the games to be played at venues managed by the Orioles. Facilities at Ed Smith Stadium and the Buck O'Neill Baseball Complex at Twin Lakes Park will be buzzing with activity from Friday evening, June 6 through...
Determined as he was to produce over a full season what he did in the final two months of his first year in the nation's capital, Nationals center fielder Denard Span struggled to a .233/.295/.314 line in the first 96 plate appearances of 2014. Three weeks later, after a 5-for-5 game against the Cincinnati Reds on May 20, the Nats' 30-year-old leadoff man was up to a .263/.308/.363 line. A 17-game stretch in which he put up a .297/.325/.418 line in 77 plate appearances helped him start to...
The Washington Nationals today selected collegiate right-handed pitcher Erick Fedde (University of Nevada-Las Vegas) with the 18th-overall pick in the 2014 First-Year Player Draft. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo and Assistant General Manager & Vice President of Scouting Operations Kris Kline made the joint announcement.
The 6-foot-4, 180-pound junior is regarded as one of the top collegiate arms in the 2014 First-Year Player Draft.
A native of Las...
An announced crowed of 33,016 saw starting pitcher Doug Fister put on a show. The right-hander pitched seven innings, scattering four hits and surrendering two runs in the Nats' 4-2 win over the Phillies. However, Fister also showcased his athleticism off the mound with some nice plays, including going into a full split at first base.
"He's a good athlete though. We saw him come off the mound a couple of times to get balls today that most pitchers don't get to, so he's a good athlete,"...
The Orioles are proud to announce that this year's Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI) Program boasts the highest level of participation in the history of the Baltimore chapter, with over 500 boys and girls involved this year.
Each age group has seen an increase of at least 40% from 2013; the number of teams has increased 50% in the 12-and-under group (nine teams in 2014 compared to six in 2013), 63% in the 13-15 age group (13 teams, up from eight), and 43% in the age 16-18 group (10...
This evening, the Nationals will take part in the First-Year Player Draft for the 10th time. In their existence, they've drafted near the top more often than not, and their first season in 2005 was no different. The Nationals held the fourth pick in what would turn out to be one of the best first rounds of any MLB draft. With the fourth pick that year, the Nationals selected third baseman Ryan Zimmerman. Two other third basemen were taken within the first five picks that year. All three of...
How about that? The Orioles have won four straight, and have scored 27 runs and racked up 50 hits over that streak. As I type this post, MLB.com's headline says the Orioles continued their "upswing in Texas" with their 6-5 victory on Wednesday.
Upswing, huh? The O's are definitely trending in the right direction and appear to be gaining a bit of momentum. Tonight, they look to sweep the Rangers in Arlington and have now elevated themselves to 30-27, second place in the American League East,...
The matchup between Stephen Strasburg and A.J. Burnett shaped up to be the best of this Phillies-Nats series, and through three frames, it hasn't disappointed.
Strasburg and Burnett have matched zeros so far with both starters allowing two hits over three scoreless innings.
Strasburg has struck four, walked none and thrown 42 pitches, 30 for strikes. Burnett has answered by striking out two, walking one and throwing 39 pitches, 24 for strikes.
The Nationals put runners in scoring position...
