WASHINGTON - The Orioles selected the contract of outfielder David Lough from Triple-A Norfolk and placed pitcher Dylan Bundy on the 60-day disabled list to create room on the 40-man roster.
Lough, 29, batted .259/.290/.310 (15-for-58), with a double, a triple, six RBIs and seven runs scored in 14 games with the Tides this season. He also hit safely in four of five postseason games with Norfolk, with a double, four walks and two runs scored.
Lough has hit .202/.243/.318 (26-129) with a double,...
WASHINGTON - Adam Jones is out of the Orioles lineup for the third straight game with back spasms. Gerardo Parra will start again in center field.
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Manny Machado (23 years, 79 days old) became the second-youngest Orioles player to notch 30 home runs in a season. Boog Powell hit his 30th at the age of 22 years, 360 days in 1964.
Machado is the third player under the age of 24 to hit 30 home runs this season, joining Bryce Harper and Mike Trout. The last time...
I can't move onto today's make-up game between the Orioles and Nationals without revisiting last night's 4-3 win over the hosts.
I devoted most of my final blog entry to the Jonathan Papelbon fastball that nailed Manny Machado on the shoulder, coming dangerously close to his head and causing both benches to empty. Manager Buck Showalter predicted that everyone would focus on the incident more so than the come-from-behind victory. It's unfortunate, but when a star player gets drilled on...
WASHINGTON - The Orioles won last night and most of the attention fell upon closer Zach Britton, who revealed that he couldn't pitch due to a strained left lat muscle. The Orioles won tonight and most of the attention fell upon third baseman Manny Machado, who hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the seventh but was targeted by the media after being targeted by Nationals closer Jonathan Papelbon.
Now it's a rivalry.
Papelbon threw high and tight on his first pitch to Machado in the ninth. The...
WASHINGTON - The Orioles have a chance tonight to gain another game on the Astros for the second wild card and reduce the margin to four.
They currently trail by 4 1/2 games after Houston's 6-5 loss earlier today to the Angels.
The Orioles jumped out to a quick lead tonight on Steve Pearce's two-run homer off Nationals right-hander Max Scherzer with two outs in the top of the first inning. Pearce's 14th home run came after a two-out walk to Chris Davis.
Davis leads the Orioles with 76 walks....
WASHINGTON - Orioles manager Buck Showalter spent the majority of today's pregame media session reflecting on the life of Yankees great Yogi Berra, who passed away early this morning at 90.
This is a rough day for Showalter. He lost a friend and mentor, and today would have been his father's 92nd birthday.
Showalter learned of Berra's passing from the Hall of Famer's granddaughter, Lindsay Berra, who called him with the news. He didn't sleep much last night.
I'll pass along Showalter's...
WASHINGTON - Ryan Flaherty didn't know that he was starting in right field tonight until bench coach John Russell posted the lineup next to his locker.
"I just saw it right there," Flaherty said.
Flaherty is no stranger to the position, but they need to get reacquainted. He appeared in one game in right last season and 17 in 2012, including nine starts.
"It's been a while," he said, adding that he needed to find a glove.
"You're always messing around out there. Spring training a lot and...
WASHINGTON - Center fielder Adam Jones remains out the Orioles lineup for tonight's game against the Nationals. He's been battling back spasms.Gerardo Parra will start in center field and Ryan Flaherty will play right field.Jones tweeted the following after the lineup was posted:
Feeling better. Not quite there yet #StayHungry.

Chris Tillman is 0-for-10 lifetime with a run scored and three strikeouts. He gets to face Max Scherzer tonight.

WASHINGTON - The traffic getting into D.C. today was the same as the previous two days despite the arrival of Pope Francis. No reason to leave the house any earlier, but I'm already seated in the Nationals Park press box while the grounds crew waters the infield and Paul Janish chats with Reed Johnson in shallow center field.
The Orioles will take early batting practice beneath a blue sky, with hardly a trace of clouds overhead. The nicest day so far since the Orioles arrived here.
How's that...
Looks aren't everything, and the same rule applies to baseball games.
The Orioles looked sloppy last night, committing three errors and failing to make a few other plays that didn't show up in the box score. Chris Davis missed a pop-up in foul territory with two outs in the ninth inning, but Darren O'Day stranded a runner that reached on Steve Pearce's dropped fly ball down the right field line.
Jonathan Schoop made a tremendous catch in shallow right field with his back to the infield,...
WASHINGTON - Darren O'Day closed out the Orioles' 4-1 win over the Nationals tonight, leading to more speculation over Zach Britton's health.
Britton blew a save Sunday against the Rays after O'Day was called upon to get the last three outs in the series opener. Britton explained tonight that he's bothered by a sore left lat muscle and basically is day-to-day at this point.
The discomfort surfaced during the previous series against the Red Sox at Camden Yards.
"At this point in the...
WASHINGTON - Who needs a designated hitter?
The Orioles did OK without one in the second inning tonight, getting a two-out RBI single from starter Ubaldo Jimenez to break a scoreless tie with the Nationals.
Nolan Reimold followed with a single into left field that scored J.J. Hardy to increase the lead to 2-0. Caleb Joseph and Hardy drew one-out walks against left-hander Gio Gonzalez.
Gonzalez threw 10 pitches in the first inning, when Chris Davis reached on a two-out error by shortstop Ian...
WASHINGTON - Orioles manager Buck Showalter said Adam Jones' back has improved, though the All-Star center fielder remains out of the lineup.
"He's better, he's better," Showalter said. "That's encouraging. Hopefully, it will continue down that path. He can do some things today that he couldn't do yesterday. That was good to see."
Showalter can't commit to Jones being in the lineup Wednesday night.
"No necessarily. We'll see what 24 hours brings," Showalter said.
Showalter also...
WASHINGTON - Center fielder Adam Jones remains out of the Orioles lineup tonight with back spasms. Junior Lake replaces him.
Nolan Reimold is leading off and playing left field. Steve Pearce is playing right field and serving as the cleanup hitter.
The Orioles' game notes include this gem from the PR department:
On this date in 1994, the "cotton uniforms" episode of Seinfeld first aired featuring manager Buck Showalter. Episode one of the sixth season (the 87th overall) is titled "The...
Former Orioles first baseman Walter Young, once rated among the organization's top prospects, passed away on Saturday from an apparent heart attack. He was 35.
A team official confirmed Young's death earlier today.
According to this article, Young was working as a resource officer for the Lamar County School District in Mississippi.
The Pirates drafted Young in the 31st round in 1999 out of Purvis (Miss.) High School before the Orioles selected him off waivers four years later. Young made his...
What could be better than losing the season's final off-day on Thursday and making the horrible drive to D.C. four times instead of three? What could possibly top spending all day and a large chunk of the night at Nationals Park without actually covering a game?
The baseball gods have a wicked sense of humor.
The Orioles will be eliminated from the division race with a loss tonight or a Blue Jays win over the Yankees. You may have stopped checking a while ago.
The Rays dropped into last place...
WASHINGTON - The Orioles' game against the Nationals tonight in D.C. has been postponed due to rain.
The game will be made up Thursday at 4:05 p.m., eliminating the off-day for both clubs. The alternative was a doubleheader Tuesday or Wednesday.
No word yet on how the rainout impacts the Orioles' rotation, but the starters are expected to be kept in order. Ubaldo Jimenez would start on Tuesday, followed by Chris Tillman on Wednesday and rookie Tyler Wilson on Thursday.
This is the second...
WASHINGTON -The start of tonight's game at Nationals Park will be delayed by rain.
Orioles manager Buck Showalter would have played Adam Jones tonight if not for the back spasms that basically took the decision out of his hands.
"He's not available to start," Showalter said before tonight's game against the Nationals. "We'll see what the rest of the game brings. Just a little wear and tear from four days on the turf and a long season of playing center field every day. Hopefully, it will...
WASHINGTON - Rain continues to fall at Nationals Park. People here sound confident that the game will be played. No word on contingency plans if there's a postponement.
Manager Buck Showalter said Adam Jones is out of the lineup due to back spasms. Jones wasn't available to start tonight, but might be able to play later if needed.
"We'll see what the rest of the game brings," Showalter said.
Showalter said Jones would have played if able. Jones received treatment on his back earlier...
WASHINGTON - Center fielder Adam Jones said he's just receiving a normal day off in the series opener against the Nationals and he wonders why it's a story.Jones usually has to be dragged out of the lineup, which makes his absence seem like a bigger deal."Just played four days on the turf, man. Got to let my body relax a little bit and heal a little bit," said Jones, who's replaced tonight by Junior Lake. Jones said there isn't one specific ailment that's bothering him."Nah, just...
