BOSTON - The Orioles are having so much fun these days, they even found tremendous joy tonight in two J.J. Hardy home runs that sneaked inside the Pesky Pole in right field.
They got a lot of mileage out of two balls that measured 321 and 331 feet.
Hardy couldn't contain his smile as he rounded the bases after the second, also a two-run shot in the seventh inning that gave him five RBIs and contributed to the Orioles' 9-5 win over the Red Sox.
"I don't think I hit one ball to the right of...
BOSTON - Ryan Flaherty is taking on the Green Monster again. No slingshot. Just a glove and a clue how to play it.
Flaherty has made only eight career starts in left field, but tonight marks his third at Fenway Park. He made six starts in 2012 and one last year, on Sept. 26 in Boston.
Manager Buck Showalter inserted Flaherty into left field yesterday in the ninth inning after the Maine native pinch-hit for Nolan Reimold.
Showalter didn't give Flaherty advance notice on tonight's start.
"No,...
BOSTON - The Orioles have extended Brian Matusz's rehab assignment, with the left-hander scheduled to pitch multiple innings Friday night at Single-A Frederick.
Matusz will follow Kevin Gausman to the mound. The Orioles would like to get five innings out of Gausman and perhaps three out of Matusz.
The assignment was extended after Matusz allowed six runs and seven hits last night in the first inning at Double-A Bowie. He threw 30 pitches before Chris Lee replaced him in the second...
BOSTON - Center fielder Adam Jones is out of the Orioles' lineup again tonight, with Rule 5 pick Joey Rickard replacing him and batting first.
Jones hasn't been in the lineup since Wednesday while he continues to receive treatment for soreness in his rib area. He played center field yesterday in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Mark Trumbo is in right field and Ryan Flaherty is in left.
According to Elias, Chris Davis' five RBIs yesterday were the most by an opposing player against the Red...
BOSTON - Orioles executive vice president Dan Duquette denied a report this morning that the crosstown-rival Nationals are pursuing him for the job of team president.
"I don't know anything about this," he wrote in a text message, "nor has anyone contacted me."
The St. Paul Pioneer Press, citing a source, reported the Nationals' interest in Duquette, who's in Boston for the Orioles' three-game series against the Red Sox.
An industry source told me earlier today that the Nationals...
BOSTON - Mike Wright finally gets a turn.
The Orioles pushed back Wright's debut from Friday to Saturday in order to accommodate Chris Tillman, who lasted only two innings and 22 pitches on opening day due to the weather. Wright warmed up and was ready to go Saturday, but a wintry mix and freezing temperatures caused a postponement before he took the mound.
So let's try this again.
Wright starts tonight against the Red Sox at Fenway Park, where rain is included in the forecast. Because it's...
BOSTON - The Orioles are 6-0 for the first time in club history, a milestone that doesn't seem to be a hot topic inside the clubhouse or the manager's office. No one is ordering a cake or thumbing through the display of Hallmark cards.
It's just six wins in six games.
"Our guys are very reality based, understand it doesn't mean much of anything," manager Buck Showalter said following a 9-7 win over the Red Sox. "It's just six games we don't have to win now. There's not much...
BOSTON - The opening day introductions and ceremonies have ended at Fenway Park and the Orioles are batting in the top of the first inning. No rain or wintery mix. No tarp on the field. It's just baseball.
Players on both teams were introduced, along with the video coordinators, translator and the Red Sox massage therapist. No love thrown toward the press box.
The Red Sox surprised David Ortiz on his final opening day by having daughter Alex Ortiz sing the National Anthem. Ortiz held his cap...
BOSTON - Adam Jones did some running and throwing before batting practice this morning and took a few swings to check whether he still felt discomfort in his rib area. The Orioles lineup already was posted inside the visiting clubhouse at Fenway Park while their center fielder worked up a sweat in the cold air.
Jones wasn't in it.
Jones hasn't played since Wednesday and remains day-to-day with an injury that the Orioles say isn't related to his oblique. Joey Rickard is back in center field,...
BOSTON - Adam Jones is not in today's Orioles lineup against the Red Sox and will miss his fourth straight start because of rib soreness.
Joey Rickard will replace Jones in center field and lead off. Mark Trumbo will play left field in front of the Green Monster, while Nolan Reimold is in right field.
Matt Wieters is the designated hitter, with Caleb Joseph catching Yovani Gallardo.
The Orioles lead the majors with a 1.80 ERA, allowing nine earned runs in 45 innings. The rotation ranks second...
BOSTON - The first homestand is behind us and it's time to embark on the first road trip, with stops in chilly Boston and steaming Arlington.
The latest forecasts calls for a 100 percent chance of rain on Tuesday. There's no escaping it.
Grab a comfortable seat today and enjoy the Red Sox's opening day festivities and whatever they have planned for David Ortiz. Tissues are optionable.
Hyun Soo Kim isn't, and he won't be in the lineup against left-hander David Price following yesterday's...
Darren O'Day battled, Zach Britton breezed and the Orioles matched the best start in club history.
O'Day struck out Hank Conger today on his 33rd pitch to escape a bases-loaded jam in the eighth inning and Britton retired the Rays in order to record his second save in a 5-3 win at Camden Yards.
The Orioles matched their best start at 5-0. Move over 1970 team. And try not to block the World Series trophy.
Hyun Soo Kim made his major league debut and went 2-for-3 with two infield singles. He...
Fans applauded Hyun Soo Kim today as he stepped to the plate in the bottom of the second inning. A much different response from opening day.
Kim's first major league at-bat came immediately after Pedro Alvarez scored from first base on Jonathan Schoop's double into the left field corner to break a scoreless tie. Aggressive send by third base coach Bobby Dickerson. Aggressive reaction from fans who were thrilled by the run and the sun.
Kim fell behind 0-2 on a foul ball and called strike, then...
Orioles manager Buck Showalter still can't provide an exact date for Adam Jones' return to the lineup. He's confident, however, that Jones is getting close and the injury isn't related to the oblique.
Jones hasn't played since Wednesday night and it's not known whether he'll play Monday afternoon in Boston.
"Any time you're dealing with that area, it's such an unknown," Showalter said. "It's so tough because you don't want to test it all the time and never give it a chance (to...
Hyun Soo Kim makes his Orioles debut today, starting in left field and batting ninth for the series finale against the Rays that also closes out the homestand.
J.J. Hardy is back at shortstop, but Adam Jones remains out of the lineup. Joey Rickard is in center field.
Manager Buck Showalter said there's one movement at the end of Jones' swing that still brings some discomfort in the rib area.
The Orioles own a 1.50 ERA, with six earned runs in 36 innings, that ranks first in the American...
Temperatures are expected to rise into the 50s today, with zero chance of rain. This qualifies as baseball weather in Baltimore as the season's first homestand draws to a close.
Outfielder Hyun Soo Kim is expected to make his Orioles debut against Rays right-hander Jake Odorizzi. Vance Worley will take the mound in his Orioles debut.
Two of the last three Orioles to get into a game will take the field unless there's been a change in plans with Kim. We know for sure that Worley is...
Tonight's game between the Orioles and Rays is over before it started.
The tarp came off the field, it returned as a wintry mix began to fall again and the Orioles just announced a postponement due to inclement weather. Not a single pitch was thrown.
No makeup date has been announced, but the Rays are back here on June 24-26.
Mike Wright likely will have his start pushed back to Sunday, when the temperature is supposed to climb into the low 50s and there's no rain in the forecast. Same with...
The Orioles are the only undefeated team left in the majors. The '72 Dolphins have champagne on ice in case the streak ends.
The Rays hit in the indoor cage this afternoon while the Orioles took batting practice outside. Ryan Flaherty was in short sleeves.
The sky is darkening again, but the Orioles feel good about their chances of playing.
"We take a lot of things into consideration to make sure it's OK for the fans," said manager Buck Showalter. "You look at a lot of different factors. I...
The Orioles are taking batting practice this afternoon on a sun-splashed field, though the temperature continues to drop.
"It's going to be cold, but we play games," said manager Buck Showalter. "That's what we do."
Showalter added that the wind is going to be "a challenge."
Center fielder Adam Jones and shortstop J.J. Hardy may have played tonight if the temperature wasn't supposed to dip into the 20s. They could return to the lineup on Sunday.
Left-hander Brian Matusz, eligible to...
Tonight's Orioles lineup against the Rays is still missing shortstop J.J. Hardy and center fielder Adam Jones.
Hardy said the calf tightness that caused him to miss Friday's game is no longer a problem, but he won't start because of the cold temperatures that are predicted for tonight's game. Hardy expects to start Sunday.
Jones is still dealing with soreness in his rib area.
With Jones and Hardy sidelined, Rule 5 pick Joey Rickard remains in center field, Manny Machado stays at shortstop...
