Bowie playoff preview: Trey Mancini leads the Baysox against Altoona (updated)
When the Eastern League playoffs begin tonight, the Double-A Bowie Baysox hope the hot bat they watched first baseman Trey Mancini sustain for 84 games this year can stay hot for a few more. Bowie (79-63) plays at Altoona (74-68) tonight in Game 1 of a best-of-five series. Altoona hosts Game 2 tomorrow, and then the series shifts to Bowie for Game 3 Friday and Games 4 and 5 if necessary Saturday and Sunday. Norfolk playoff preview: A look at Terry Doyle, who takes the ball in Game 1 tonight
For Triple-A Norfolk right-hander Terry Doyle, his 2015 season is ending up very differently than it started. Hoping to break spring training with Norfolk, he was instead sent to Double-A Bowie, where he was not even on the active roster on opening day. But on April 17, he was activated by Bowie. On May 10, he joined the Baysox rotation and pitched great. On Aug. 3, he was promoted to Norfolk, and tonight, he will pitch the playoff opener for the Tides at home against Columbus to start a...

Chris Davis hits tiebreaking homer in ninth as O's win 2-1
Chris Davis probably was not unhappy when the Yankees had a lefty reliever face him to start the top of the ninth tonight. Chasen Shreve came on in a 1-1 game. After all, Davis has hit lefies well this year, batting .289 with an OPS of .850 and nine homers in 149 at-bats. Then, when Shreve left a 2-0 fastball up and out over the plate, Davis lined it into the left-field stands for his 41st homer. That blast put the Orioles ahead 2-1 and they won by that score tonight at Yankee Stadium to end a...

O's game blog: Orioles are 1-7 this season at Yankee Stadium
Last season, as the Orioles were on their way to the American League East championship, they went 13-6 against the New York Yankees and 6-4 in New York. This year, as they may struggle to even have a winning record, they are 5-9 against the Yankees and only 1-7 in New York. On Monday, the Orioles lost an early 4-1 lead in losing 8-6 at Yankee Stadium. The Orioles have lost five straight at Yankee Stadium and they are 0-4 in one-run road games versus the Yankees. A look at the interesting case of pending free agent Gerardo Parra
When the Orioles traded with Milwaukee for outfielder Gerardo Parra, they got a player who was having a great season to plug a hole at a corner outfield position. In 100 games this year with Milwaukee, Parra was outstanding. He came to the Orioles ranked fourth in batting in the National League, and ninth in slugging and OPS. He came to Baltimore batting .328 with 24 doubles, five triples, nine homers and 31 RBIs. He was hitting .435 in July and .460 during an active 14-game hitting streak at...

O's lose early lead and then game on tiebreaking homer in seventh

O's lose early lead and then game on tiebreaking homer in seventh
We've seen it happen far too often lately: An Orioles pitcher allows a key hit when ahead in the count. It happened today at a crucial point in the game at New York. First baseman Greg Bird hit a three-run homer on an 0-2 pitch from Brian Matusz. He got a hanging breaking ball and didn't miss it. That broke a 5-5 tie in the seventh inning as New York beat the Orioles 8-6 this afternoon. With their 15th loss in 18 games, the Orioles fall to 65-72. They have fallen to seven games under .500 for...

A look at the O's shaky rotation stats, plus Norfolk celebrates a division championship
The Orioles three-game series in Toronto was a lot like most of the 2015 season. Just when it looked like something good could happen, it didn't. Friday's 10-2 blowout win was impressive and the Orioles crushed the red-hot, high-scoring Blue Jays. Given a chance to win a series at Rogers Centre, the Orioles scored just one run Saturday and gave up 10 runs yesterday. Friday, the Orioles scored 10 runs on 13 hits with four doubles and four homers, and they went 5-for-10 with runners in scoring...

Hearing from Showalter, Jones and Tillman after O's loss in Toronto

Hearing from Showalter, Jones and Tillman after O's loss in Toronto
TORONTO - For the Orioles, it was a missed chance to win a series against the American League East leaders after a blowout win on Friday. They scored too few runs Saturday and gave up too many today in a 10-4 loss. They've lost 14 of 17 to fall to 65-71 and certainly the players see what everyone else does. The window is almost closed on the Orioles' 2015 playoff chances. "It's not about what we see. It's about the reality," outfielder Adam Jones said. "You look at the standings and you...

Chris Tillman gets knocked out early as Jays win big in series finale
TORONTO - Chris Tillman against the Toronto Blue Jays has just not been a good matchup for the right-hander or the Orioles this year, and that trend continued this afternoon. Tillman got blasted for three homers and allowed six runs in three innings plus one batter as the Blue Jays beat the Orioles 10-4 to take two of three in the series. The Orioles lost the last two games of the series against the American League East leaders after Friday's 10-2 win. They head to New York with a record of...

O's game blog: Showalter on Wieters, Hardy, Reimold and more
TORONTO - Orioles manager Buck Showalter would not say whether catcher Matt Wieters is available to play today or not. Wieters injured his left wrist Friday night and was not available yesterday, as reporters found out after the game. He is not starting today as the Orioles and Blue Jays wrap up this three-game series. "He's better today," Showalter said. "We won't talk about his availability, but we'll see as the day progresses. It's better than it was yesterday. He felt better holding...

Some notes from the weekend series at Rogers Centre

Some notes from the weekend series at Rogers Centre
TORONTO - Well, the Orioles pitching has done OK in this series at Rogers Centre. The O's staff gave up two runs on Friday night and five on Saturday to the highest scoring team in the majors. But today Chris Tillman will have to turn around his problems pitching against the Blue Jays - both this year and in his career. In four starts this season against Toronto, Tillman is 0-3 with an ERA of 15.00, allowing 27 hits and 25 runs in 15 innings. In 18 career starts versus the Jays, he is 4-9 with...

Wieters on wrist injury; Showalter, Wright and Joseph discuss O's loss to Jays
TORONTO - Orioles manager Buck Showalter revealed after today's game that catcher Matt Wieters was not available this afternoon. He provided that information when asked about not using Wieters or anyone else as a possible pinch-hitter in the seventh inning of the O's 5-1 loss to Toronto. The Orioles had runners on first and second with one out and had just ended David Price's shutout bid. However, Junior Lake and Paul Janish both struck out to end the threat. "Matt was not available to hit...

TORONTO - With five homers his last three games, Chris Davis is the first Oriole to have five home runs in a three-game run since Mark Reynolds did so, July 2-4, 2011. The last major league player with five home runs in a three-game stretch was the Nationals' Bryce Harper, May 6-9, 2015. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Davis has 26 homers against the Blue Jays over the last four seasons. His 26 homers are the most by any major league hitter against one team over a four-year span since...

Until their 10-2 loss to the Orioles on Friday, the Blue Jays had allowed seven or fewer runs in all 42 games since the All-Star break and were 31-11. The 42-game streak was a club record and the longest in MLB this year. Last night's loss for Toronto was also the first time they have lost by more than three runs since July 4 in an 8-3 defeat at Detroit. The Blue Jays have given up 10 runs seven times this...

Davis on his big night, plus Showalter, Wieters and Jimenez postgame quotes
TORONTO -- First baseman Chris Davis tonight became the first Oriole to ever have two 40-homer seasons. He hit his 39th and 40th and drove in three in the O's 10-2 rout of Toronto. "It means a lot," Davis said. "I really don't focus a whole lot on personal goals. My goal is to come in here every day and do what I can to help the team win. There have obviously been a lot of great players who have come through this organization, so to be the first one, it's a good feeling, it's a humbling...

The Orioles slowed a red-hot Blue Jays team that went 21-6 in August and was 31-11 since the All-Star break, averaging 5.8 runs per game. TORONTO - The Orioles fully expect J.J. Hardy to be back in their lineup on Tuesday when he is eligible to come off the DL. He went on the disabled list Aug. 24 with a left groin strain. "He's doing good and hopefully will be playing shorstop for us Tuesday in New York," manager Buck Showalter said this afternoon. "He's very close now. Brady (Anderson) has had him doing a lot of stuff that you all may not see. He's been going almost full tilt. Today is the day we will push it a lot and...
