NORFOLK, Va. - Lefty Brian Matusz has kept the Triple-A Norfolk Tides off the scoreboard through four innings today as the Orioles and Tides are scoreless on a now cloudy afternoon with a light rain falling at Harbor Park.
Matusz, expected to be officially named to the O's rotation after today's game, has allowed just three hits with one walk and five strikeouts. Matusz entered today's game with a spring record of 1-1 with a 3.65 ERA in 24 2/3 innings. He walked just three batters with 22...
TAMPA, Fla. - I made it to my Airtran gate at the Tampa airport after having my hands "tested" by security because my photo ID was in my back pocket.
I've had them slapped before, but never tested.
Anyway, I'm happy to report that my hands passed the test and I'm allowed to fly home, where the forecast apparently calls for temperatures in the 70s (good news) and rain (bad news.)
I'm up to exactly 6,600 Twitter followers (@MASNroch) after arriving at spring training below 6,000, so...
NORFOLK, Va. - Today is a homecoming for Orioles third baseman Mark Reynolds. He lived in the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area up until he left to play in college at the University of Virginia. He attended First Colonial High, which is 17 miles from Harbor Park.
"It feels good (to come home)," Reynolds said. "I was telling those guys earlier, I've never played here before. I used to come to games here, so it is a pretty cool experience to be back here playing.
"I was never a specific team's...
NORFOLK, Va. - Besides telling reporters that Tommy Hunter will start the second game of the season between Jake Arrieta and Jason Hammel, Orioles manager Buck Showalter didn't reveal any new news today here during pre-game interviews at Harbor Park.
Showalter said he would announce his five-man rotation and any final roster moves after today's game with the Tides. It still appears that Wei-Yin Chen and Brian Matusz will round out the rotation, but it just has not yet been...

SARASOTA, Fla. - The Orioles have decided to place Japanese left-hander Tsuyoshi Wada on the 15-day disabled list. The move will be backdated to make Wada eligible to join the Orioles on April 12.
The plan calls for Wada to make two starts, the first being at extended spring training. He could make a second one in Sarasota or report to one of the affiliates on a rehab assignment.
In both starts, the Orioles want Wada to throw 90 pitches.
The Orioles have 26 players in camp, leaving two...
SALISBURY, Md. - After three innings of tonight's exhibition game at Perdue Stadium, Delmarva has a 2-1 lead on Salisbury University.
Delmarva took a 1-0 lead in the last of the first. Glynn Davis led off with an infield single, stole second and third bases, and later scored on a Wynston Sawyer sac fly.
Salisbury tied the game with a run in the top of the second before Delmarva moved ahead in the last of the third. John Ruettiger was hit by a pitch to lead the inning and then stole two bases...
SALISBURY, Md. - He may be a first-round draft pick. He has a ton of talent and the scouts rave about him. Orioles fans are expecting nothing less than to see Dylan Bundy in the orange and black one day, dominating American League hitters.
If he is feeling any pressure to live up to all those expectations, Bundy was not letting on yesterday here during the media day for the Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds.
"I really don't feel any pressure at all. I just like to go about my business the way I...
SALISBURY, Md. - You had to figure Dylan Bundy might pitch Single-A Delmarva's season opening game and that is exactly what he will do when he takes the mound on Thursday night in Asheville, N.C. for the Shorebirds in his professional debut for the Orioles organization.
There was a lot of speculation about where Bundy would begin his minor league career and he will start right here in Salisbury with the Shorebirds in the South Atlantic League.
"I'm excited to get here and start my career...
SALISBURY, Md. - At the Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds media day this afternoon, Birds' manager Ryan Minor said Dylan Bundy will be his opening night starter Thursday at Asheville and is scheduled to pitch three innings in the club's South Atlantic League opener.
The Orioles' first-round pick from last year's draft has pitched sparingly so far in camp and will likely be limited to several outings around three innings or so early in the year with Delmarva.
"I think so," Minor said of the...
SARASOTA, Fla. - This is my final spring training blog entry from Sarasota. The next time you hear from me, I'll be filing early Wednesday morning from the Marriott at the Tampa airport before stumbling to my gate for a 6:45 a.m. flight home.
Now if I could only remember where I parked my car seven weeks ago. And my address.
Here's manager Buck Showalter on the decision to place Tsuyoshi Wada on the 15-day disabled list:
"Wada will probably take a minimum of two outings. He'll stay here....
SARASOTA, Fla. - The Orioles made two more roster cuts today, reassigning reliever Pat Neshek to minor league camp and outrighting outfielder Jai Miller to Triple-A Norfolk after he cleared waivers.
The Orioles have 27 active players in camp.
Relievers Darren O'Day, Zach Phillips and Troy Patton, and starter Tsuyoshi Wada are vying for the last two spots.
The Orioles have 38 players on the 40-man roster, which leaves room for Nick Johnson and Ronny Paulino.
Manager Buck Showalter has...
SARASOTA, Fla. - Tsuyoshi Wada is waiting to find out whether he's going to be included on the 25-man roster or if he'll stay back at extended spring training.
Is he ready to start the season?
"I feel like my condition is normal," Wada said through his interpreter. "It's not really good and it's not really bad. It's normal. If I'm going to throw next week in the season, I'll work on it and get more ready, get my body condition more ready for the season.
"I'm ready to go to...
SARASOTA, Fla. - The two starting pitchers are done for the day.
Jason Hammel and Tsuyoshi Wada each went five innings. Wada stayed on the mound for two extra batters in the fifth after recording the final out, getting a fly ball and giving up a double before manager Buck Showalter halted the inning.
Hammel allowed two runs and three hits, with one walk, three strikeouts and a wild pitch. He threw 65 pitches, 43 for strikes.
Wada allowed one run and five hits, with one walk and two...
Want to change those dull, white license plates on your car? Now you can. The Orioles and Maryland's Motor Vehicle Administration are now giving you that opportunity.
Today, the Orioles announced that, in conjunction with the MVA, they have created Orioles-themed license plates.
The plates will be $50 apiece, with $25 going to the Baltimore Orioles Charitable Foundation.
Also for charity, license plate numbers featuring the uniform jersey numbers of Adam Jones, Nick Markakis and Matt...
The Orioles today announced that they have assigned right-handed pitcher Pat Neshek to minor league camp. Neshek appeared in 10 games and recorded one save for the Orioles this spring, allowing three hits over nine scoreless innings. Neshek did not walk a batter and struck out eight.
The Orioles also announced that right-handed pitcher Alfredo Simon has been claimed on waivers by the Cincinnati Reds. In four seasons with the Orioles, Simon was 8-12 with a 5.18 ERA (184.1IP,...
SARASOTA, Fla. - Manager Buck Showalter is waiting to make the final cuts until checking on "a couple physical issues."
"We've still got a couple days, so we don't want to get ahead of ourselves," he said.
Showalter has contingency plans in case certain players aren't ready for opening day. He isn't providing specifics.
Showalter is monitoring Tsuyoshi Wada's health and trying to get him stretched out. Wada is starting today for the State College of Florida.
Ronny Paulino is...
SARASOTA, Fla. - Former Orioles pitcher Jason Johnson is in camp and hoping to get a tryout as he attempts a comeback from labrum surgery.
Johnson lives in Tampa, about an hour away from the Ed Smith Stadium complex. He contacted special assistant Brady Anderson, a former teammate, who invited him to camp this morning.
Johnson is getting ready to throw off one of the bullpen mounds. He's hoping that a team will sign him and send him to extended spring training.
The San Francisco Giants...
The Orioles today announced that they, in conjunction with the Maryland MVA, have created Orioles-themed, State of Maryland license plates that feature the new cartoon bird along with a randomly assigned 4-digit number. Plates cost $50, with $25 going to the Baltimore Orioles Charitable Foundation.
Featuring the popular cartoon bird logo, the license plate is a great way for fans to show their fandom while also supporting the many community programs funded and supported by OriolesREACH.

SARASOTA, Fla. - Ryan Flaherty doesn't show much emotion. He's about as low-key as they come in the Orioles' clubhouse. But he clearly was moved by today's news that he had made the team as a Rule 5 pick.
Manager Buck Showalter informed Flaherty earlier today that the Maine native won the utility job.
"They told me I was going to make the team, so it's pretty special to get told that," he said.
"It was good. It was in front of the team. He said, 'Obviously, you've got a few days...
