The Orioles officially announced today's trade that sent Jeremy Guthrie to the Colorado Rockies for pitchers Jason Hammel and Matt Lindstrom.
They also confirmed that left-handed specialist Clay Rapada has been designated for assignment to clear a spot on the 40-man roster.
Guthrie said the deal was pretty much done Saturday night.
"I talked to my agent, Brodie (Van Wagenen) and all parties involved and they let us know that's what was going to happen," he said.
"At first, you're a...
The Orioles today announced that they have acquired right-handed pitchers Jason Hammel and Matt Lindstrom from the Colorado Rockies in exchange for right-handed pitcher Jeremy Guthrie.
Hammel, 29, is 34-45 with a 4.99 ERA (732.0IP, 406 ER) in 169 career games (115 starts) over six major league seasons with Tampa Bay (2006-08) and Colorado (2009-11). He has pitched 170 or more innings in each of the last three seasons for the Rockies and has posted strikeout to walk ratios of 3:1 or better in...
The Orioles had an arbitration hearing scheduled today with pitcher Jeremy Guthrie in St. Petersburg, Fla., but it's been postponed amid rumors that he's about to be traded. And according to a source, a deal is close with the Rockies that would bring pitchers Jason Hammel and Matt Lindstrom to Baltimore.
Hammel, 29, was 7-13 with a 4.76 ERA in 32 games - including 27 starts - for the Rockies last season. He's 34-45 with a 4.99 ERA in 169 games, including 115 starts in six seasons spent with...
Thursday night, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports quoted sources as telling him that the Oakland A's and Orioles had expressed the most interest in free agent Manny Ramirez. He said it was unclear, though, if either team had made a contract offer. This news was not met with elation from most Orioles' fans.
Ramirez has been linked to the Orioles pretty much ever since Dan Duquette took over as executive vice president. Duquette is the man that signed Ramirez to a whopping eight-year deal worth $160...
Former Tigers and Athletics outfielder Jeff Larish posted on Facebook today that he signed a minor league deal with the Orioles. A team official confirmed it.
That's the usual order. Facebook first, then the team.
Larish 29, won't receive an invitation to spring training.
Larish, a left-handed hitter, has been a corner infielder and outfielder. He's hitting .224/.308/.360 with eight homers and 32 RBIs in parts of three major league seasons, the last one in 2010. He hit .240/.330/.449...
I opened yesterday's "Mid-Atlantic Sports Report" with a mini-rant against the Orioles signing Manny Ramirez. I may as well expand on it here.
I'm just searching for the logic behind their interest, beyond a few obvious points.
First of all, executive vice president Dan Duquette is looking for another bat, and it would fit nicely in the designated hitter and cleanup spots. As it currently stands, Wilson Betemit could be the primary DH, and that's not an ideal scenario.
The market is...
Dan Duquette's continued pursuit of international talent for the Orioles led him to South Korea and the Orioles executive vice president this week announced the signing of 17-year-old, left-handed high school pitcher Seong-Min Kim.
"Kim is a top quality left-handed pitcher," Duquette said. "He's got an excellent breaking ball and very good command of it. It's a 12-6 breaking ball and he's got an average fastball. Our scouts really like this player and they've been following him for a...
I realize that pitchers and catchers don't report to spring training for 15 more days, but I'm already making a mental list of the most important story lines that I'll be following through March. I should probably write them down, since I don't trust my memory, but I'd probably forget where I put the list.
There are three that instantly come to my mind. I'm not exactly sure of the order, but I think it goes something like this:
1. Brian Roberts' status and what happens if he can't...
The Orioles have announced the hiring of Chris Correnti as a performance consultant. Correnti was most recently with the New York Mets as a rehabilitation specialist from 2007-2010.
Correnti will provide fitness and conditioning advisory services to the organization. He will be responsible for the oversight of the individual rehabilitation of injured players, as selected by the medical staff. Correnti will also implement year-round training and conditioning programs for the organization's...
The Orioles today announced that they have promoted Kevin Cummings to Director of Ballpark Operations .
Cummings has over 20 years of experience working in the sports industry. Before joining the Orioles in 2010 as Assistant Director of Ballpark Operations , he was most recently with the Lancaster Barnstormers independent baseball team. Cummings has also worked in minor league baseball for teams in Lynchburg, VA ; Mobile, AL ; and West Palm Beach, Ft. Lauderdale and Sarasota, FL. He has also...
The Nationals just confirmed that they have reached agreement with free-agent pitcher Edwin Jackson on a one-year deal. Various reports place its worth at approximately $10 million.
Jon Heyman of CBS Sports was the first to tweet the news, saying that Jackson was spotted at the airport as he arrived in town for his physical.
Heyman didn't specify which airport. Plenty of people fly into Dulles on their way to Baltimore.
Forget it. Jackson wasn't going to sign with the Orioles unless they...
If Chris Tillman isn't part of the Orioles' rotation when they break camp, it won't be from a lack of effort.
Tillman continues to work out with Orioles special assistant Brady Anderson in California, part of a group that also includes Brian Matusz, Tommy Hunter, Scott Beerer and Rick VandenHurk.
"Workout-wise, we're getting after it pretty good, whether Brady is here or not," Tillman said. "There's always a guy there to watch us. It's tough to get back in shape and to get in really...
This will probably come as no surprise to anyone that follows the team, but when ESPN.com recently ranked the American League East teams position by position, the Orioles didn't fare too well.
This story was in the SweetSpot blog and authored by David Schoenfield.
First, the most positive news.
Matt Wieters was rated as the best catcher in the division.
1. Matt Wieters, Orioles
2. Russell Martin, Yankees
3. J.P. Arencibia, Blue Jays
4. Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Red Sox
5. Jose Molina, Rays...
The Orioles have three arbitration cases scheduled for the next 15 days. One with pitcher Jeremy Guthrie this Monday, one with pitcher Brad Bergesen next Wednesday and one with outfielder Adam Jones scheduled for Feb. 17.
Orioles executive vice president Dan Duquette would not speculate this morning on how likely the Orioles would be to settle on a 2012 contract with those players before hearings are held, but said the club is ready for the hearings if it comes to that.
The Orioles have not...
This is going to qualify as one of those non-update updates that you've grown to love or hate.
I'm not sure which side you're on, but here it comes.
Adam Katz, the agent for Yoenis Cespedes, would only confirm earlier today that "several teams are involved" with the Cuban outfielder, who became a free agent last month. The Orioles are one of them, and executive director of international recruiting Fred Ferreira was scheduled to fly to the Dominican today to watch Cespedes work out.
The...
Chris Davis began last season as the starting third baseman for the Triple-A Round Rock Express and Nolan Reimold began last year as the starting left fielder for the Triple-A Norfolk Tides.
Davis has 1,807 career at-bats in the minors and 1,005 in the majors. Reimold has 1,986 in the minors and 741 in the majors. Reimold has spent parts of the past three seasons in Triple-A, while Davis has spent time in Triple-A in each of the last four seasons.
Will 2012 be the year when both players get a...
Nearly 150 Sarasota-area youth will have the opportunity to receive professional instruction from current and former Orioles players at a series of baseball clinics the club will host during the coming weeks. Through OriolesREACH, the team will host children from the Central Sarasota County Little League and Cal Ripken Baseball League at the Buck O'Neil Baseball Complex on Saturday, February 4. The Orioles will then travel to the Miracle League Field for a clinic with members of the Miracle...
Breaking news: The Orioles aren't expected to sign Edwin Jackson.
In other news, Rhode Island isn't a road or an island, and Billy Cundiff isn't automatic from inside the 35.
The Orioles weren't going to give Jackson more than three guaranteed years for the money he's been seeking, and he wasn't going to sign with them for one year and re-enter the free-agent market next winter. Not when he's looking to pitch for a contender and improve his value. That's been the case all along.
I...
The Orioles announced today that they've reached an agreement with State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) Manatees Baseball, to play an exhibition game at Ed Smith Stadium on Tuesday, April 3 at 1:05 p.m.
There will be no admission charge to attend the game except for reserved tickets near the SCF dugout that will be sold by the college, with proceeds supporting Manatees athletics. Tickets can be reserved through the SCF athletic department at 941-752-5261.
For the last 12 years,...
He is a submarine-style, right-handed relief pitcher and, if he reclaims the form he showed during an outstanding 2010 season with Texas, he could be a key piece to the 2012 Orioles bullpen.
The O's claimed 29-year-old pitcher Darren O'Day off waivers from Texas in November and now he wants to put last year, when he had surgery and missed a large part of the season, behind him.
O'Day went 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA in just 16 2/3 innings with the Rangers last year and also spent some time in the...
