Isn't it nice to have the 2011 First-Year Player Draft behind us?
No more speculation on who the Orioles will select. No more speculation on who they will sign. It's finally done.
I would have settled for the Orioles reaching agreement with Dylan Bundy and one of the other two Top 10 picks - Jason Esposito or Nick Delmonico. Getting all three was a nice haul.
It's unfortunate that Bundy fell short of the $30 million signing bonus that he sought after the Orioles drafted him, but an...
The Orioles tonight announced that they have agreed to terms with right-handed pitcher Dylan Bundy, their first selection in the 2011 First Year Player Draft, and the fourth overall pick of the draft. Bundy has been signed to a five-year major league contract beginning in 2012.
Bundy, 18, is a 6-foot-1, 200-pound right-handed pitcher from Sperry, Okla. In his senior season at Owasso High School, he went 11-0 with a 0.20 ERA and 158 strikeouts and five walks in 71.0 innings. He also batted .467...
The Orioles have signed their first-round draft pick, high school pitcher Dylan Bundy. They selected him with the fourth pick in the June draft.
The word came out just about right at the midnight deadline.
This means the Orioles signed all their picks over the first 11 rounds of the draft as today they got second-round pick Jason Esposito and sixth-rounder Nicky Delmonico. This is the first time the Orioles signed all the picks in the first 11 rounds since 2005, Joe Jordan's first season as...
Tommy Hunter gave up two runs, and a lead, in the second inning, but he's giving the Orioles a quality start.
Hunter has blanked the Athletics since the second. He's allowed nine hits, walked none and struck out two in six innings.
Hunter gets the first two outs and then runs into a little trouble, but nothing he can't handle at the moment.
The Orioles have only two hits off Oakland left-hander Gio Gonzalez through the sixth inning, including Matt Wieters' solo home run. Nick Markakis...
The Orioles reached agreement with their second-round pick, Vanderbilt third baseman Jason Esposito. A team official confirmed it a few minutes ago.
Esposito is known more for his glove, but he hit .341 with nine homers and 59 RBIs in 65 games. Esposito posted a .405 on-base percentage and .534 slugging percentage.
Esposito just tweeted the following (@jasonesposito): "3 of the best years of my life in Nashville and loved being a Commodore! Thank you to all Vandy fans! Time to move to the...
Catcher Matt Wieters is off to a good start tonight in Oakland.
Wieters threw out Jemile Weeks trying to steal second base in the bottom of the first inning, and it wasn't even close. Shortstop J.J. Hardy took the throw. put his glove down, picked it back up, pulled out his Blackberry and updated his Facebook status, put his glove back down and let Weeks slide into it.
After disposing of the Athletics' potential go-ahead run, Wieters gave the Orioles a 1-0 lead in the top of the second with...
The Orioles have come to terms with their second-round draft pick, Vanderbilt third baseman Jason Esposito. They selected him with the 64th overall selection.
Esposito is a 6-foot-2, 205-pound right-handed hitter that turned 21 on July 19. This year in college he hit .341 with nine homers and 59 RBIs in 65 games. He had an on-base percentage of .405 and slugging percentage of .534. Esposito hit .376 in Southeastern Conference games.
He started every game in three seasons with Vanderbilt and...
As of just after 6 p.m., there was still no word on the Orioles' remaining three top draft pick targets. The Orioles still hope to sign first-round pick Dylan Bundy tonight along with second-rounder Jason Esposito and Nick Delmonico, taken in round six.
Bundy seems a very safe bet to sign at this point, but right now, there is no clear indication either way about the other pair. My guess, and it remains just a guess, is that they get all three. I think Delmonico would probably be the most...
Reliever Dan Klein, widely regarded as the Orioles' top pitching prospect, will undergo exploratory surgery tomorrow in his right shoulder.
Klein has a SLAP tear in his right labrum, but the Orioles want to make sure he isn't dealing with other issues, as well. He underwent surgery while at UCLA to clean out the capsule in his rotator cuff area.
Klein hasn't pitched since June 1 at Double-A Bowie. Continuing soreness in his shoulder led to an MRI that confirmed the tear.
Dr. Lewis Yocum...
A few minutes after the Orioles wrapped up an 8-5 win over Detroit to end a 10-game homestand, Nick Markakis was asked if he needed to have a big day like he did in this win.
"I think we needed that more as team, personally," Markakis said, after his four-RBI game. "You know, I could care less what I do. But whether it's getting three hits in a game or taking an 0-fer, winning the game is what it comes down to.
"We came out swinging the bats. Nolan (Reimold) got us started a couple of...
Nick Markakis had his most productive RBI day in over two months, driving in four runs this afternoon, as the Orioles beat Detroit 8-5 behind Jo-Jo Reyes to take the series finale this afternoon in front of 18,348 at Camden Yards.
The Orioles ended their 10-game homestand going 3-7 and are 46-72 on the year as they now head on a West Coast road trip.
The Orioles took an 8-1 lead to the ninth, but Kevin Gregg came on and six straight Tigers reached to make the score 8-4. Jim Johnson came in...
The 12th annual Cal Ripken World Series has begun at the Ripken Academy in Aberdeen. The Series features ten teams from the United States along with squads from Canada, the Dominican Republic, the Republic of Korea, Australia, Mexico and Japan.
The U.S teams include the Maryland State champs from Charles County and the Harford County champs from Bel Air, Md.
The CRWS, which will be played from Aug. 13-21, is the culminating tournament of the Babe Ruth League's 12 and Under Cal Ripken...
At a time when the Orioles rotation is currently without Brian Matusz, Zach Britton and Jake Arrieta and Jeremy Guthrie's ERA is 7.32 over his past three starts, the starters are, not too surprisingly, struggling right now.
They are struggling big time.
Guthrie gave up six runs over 5 2/3 last night after Chris Tillman allowed six runs in 2 2/3 on Friday in game one of the Detroit series.
Here are some numbers on the rotation recently:
* No quality starts in the last seven games with an...
It appears that Orioles minor league pitcher Clayton Schrader, who was having a real strong season, could miss the rest of this year.
Schrader has been on the Single-A Frederick disabled list since Aug. 2, due to elbow discomfort. He has a flexor mass strain. He has not resumed throwing to this point and there may not be enough time for him to get back in games before the 2011 season ends.
The right-hander, the Orioles' 10th-round pick last year, is 1-1 with three saves and ERA of 1.13 for...
The Orioles still get some respect around the league.
Shortstop J.J. Hardy was named the AL's Player of the Week for the period ending on Sunday. It's the first time in his career that he's received the award.
Hardy is the first Orioles shortstop to be named Player of the Week since Miguel Tejada in 2006.
In seven games last week, Hardy batted .323 (10-for-31) with two doubles, four home runs, a league-leading 10 RBIs and six runs scored.
Hardy produced at least one RBI in eight...
Baseball America's Jim Callis, the man who seems to break the news on most top draft picks when they sign and provides their bonus information, thinks the Orioles are likely to sign their three remaining draft targets.
The O's are said to be still negotiating with top pick Dylan Bundy, second-round pick Jason Esposito and sixth-rounder Nick Delmonico.
"I think they are going to get all three done. It's just that MLB is having the teams play this slower than ever," Callis said.
"Dylan...
As always, things could change in a minute, but from what I have heard, it doesn't sound like the Orioles will have any draft news with any signings over the next hour or two.
All the fun could go into tonight.
One source described the O's "as hopeful still, but not totally convinced" they would get all three of their remaining targets in Dylan Bundy, Jason Esposito and Nick Delmonico.
Meanwhile, while we all wait, here is some interesting audio from an earlier interview with scouting...
Maybe it's a jinx to hit a ball into the second deck at Camden Yards.
Rex Hudler never made it into the Hall of Fame, and Mark Reynolds can't make it to first base.
Reynolds is 1-for-26 with 12 strikeouts since his 450-foot blast - or his 463-foot blast, depending on who's doing the measuring.
Reynolds will try to get untracked tonight against Oakland left-hander Gio Gonzalez. He's 0-for-2 with an RBI, three walks and a strikeout against Gonzalez, which basically tells us...
The dog days of August are upon us, and Orioles players scour the schedule for their precious off-days. Recharge the batteries, rest and relax - that's the mantra whenever a blank square appears on the schedule during the course of a 162-game season.
Not so long ago, however, not all off-days were off-days. Once a season, the O's used one of those coveted days when a regular-season game wasn't scheduled and hopped a charter flight to Rochester, N.Y., home of their Triple-A affiliate, the...
As the final day to sign 2011 draft pick begins, the Orioles are still seeking their three main targets: first-round pick Dylan Bundy, second-round pick Jason Esposito and sixth-round selection, Nicky Delmonico.
According to Baseball America's Jim Callis, in a tweet filed early this morning, the Orioles signed Arizona high school right-handed pitcher Zach Davies. The 26th-round pick got a reported $575,000 bonus.
The Orioles have been very confident that they would get Bundy signed since the...
