Arrieta escapes trouble in first, Matusz does not (updated twice)

Arrieta escapes trouble in first, Matusz does not (updated twice)
The first two Blue Jays reached base against Orioles starter Jake Arrieta in the bottom of the first inning. Yunel Escobar singled and Eric Thames walked. Instant trouble for Arrieta, but it was a hollow threat. Arrieta retired the next three batters, and the Orioles rewarded him with Derrek Lee's two-run double in the top of the second. Vladimir Guerrero singled in his first at-bat since coming off the disabled list. Matt Wieters also singled, and Lee followed with a double to left...

Road woes plague the O's

Road woes plague the O's
As they begin a 10-game road trip with a series at Toronto tonight, road woes still plague the O's. Consider: * The Orioles have lost nine straight road series since taking two of three at St. Pete against Tampa Bay from May 13-15. Since then, they are 5-21 and have lost their last seven road games. * The Orioles actually have a better road winning percentage this year in American League East games (6-10 for .375) then in road games overall (14-30 for .318). The Orioles have most of those...

Worrell optioned to Norfolk, Britton will start Saturday

Worrell optioned to Norfolk, Britton will start Saturday
The Orioles finally made it official. Vladimir Guerrero has been activated from the disabled list after completing batting practice today at Rogers Centre. To make room for him on the 25-man roster, the Orioles optioned right-hander Mark Worrell to Triple-A Norfolk. Guerrero is batting cleanup as the designated hitter. He had been on the disabled list since suffering a fractured bone in his right hand on July 10 in Boston. Guerrero is hitting .279 with seven homers and 31 RBIs in 83...

Guerrero activated from DL, O's option Worrell

Guerrero activated from DL, O's option Worrell
The Orioles today announced that they have reinstated designated hitter Vladimir Guerrero from the 15-day disabled list and optioned right-hander Mark Worrell to Triple-A Norfolk. Guerrero, 36, is batting .279 (87-312) with seven home runs and 31 RBI in 83 games for the Orioles this season. He went 1-for-4 on Sunday in a rehab game with Double-A Bowie. Worrell, 28, pitched to a 36.00 ERA (2.0IP, 8ER) in four games with the Orioles.

This, that and the other

This, that and the other
Another day brings another roster move for the Orioles. I've lost count. Vladimir Guerrero will be activated from the disabled list, and the Orioles are expected to remove a pitcher from their 25-man roster. They've got nine relievers in their bullpen. I don't like to speculate, but Mark Worrell is a candidate to be designated for assignment. That's my guess. Luke Scott will undergo surgery this morning to repair a torn labrum. Dr. James Andrews is handling the procedure from his...

Orioles and Blue Jays lineups

Orioles and Blue Jays lineups
Vladimir Guerrero is batting cleanup tonight in Toronto. Still waiting for the Orioles to reveal the corresponding roster move. They have to make sure Guerrero gets through batting practice without any setbacks. Also, left-hander Michael Gonzalez will start serving his suspension tonight, but he can't be replaced on the roster, so the Orioles must eliminate a player while adding Guerrero. For the Orioles: J.J. Hardy SS Nick Markakis RF Adam Jones CF Vladimir Guerrero DH Matt Wieters C...

J. Stockstill on Britton, Hobgood, Townsend and Klein

J. Stockstill on Britton, Hobgood, Townsend and Klein
In his last major league start, Zach Britton gave up eight runs in the first inning on July 8 at Boston. Last night, pitching for Double-A Bowie at home against Harrisburg, he took a shutout into the fifth inning and then gave up eight runs to that club. There was an error that hurt his cause, but Britton gave up eight runs (four earned) and eight hits in 4 2/3 with no walks and nine strikeouts. He allowed two homers in that fifth inning before leaving the game. Orioles director of player...

Lauren Tilley: It all comes down to pitching

Lauren Tilley: It all comes down to pitching
Decades ago, Major League Baseball was all about the domination of pitchers. Eventually, the league changed the height of the mound and some other rules in order to make baseball more offense-friendly, because that's what fans like to see (I actually prefer pitching duels to offensive shootouts). Those days of pitching dominance are on us again with the likes of Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee and Tim Lincecum. Have you noticed that those pitchers' respective teams - the Philadelphia Phillies and San...

Britton cruised, then bashed at Bowie

Britton cruised, then bashed at Bowie
If left-hander Zach Britton is leaving Double-A Bowie, it won't be on a high note. Britton faced the minimum number of Harrisburg batters through four innings - catcher Derek Norris singled in the fourth, but he was thrown out trying to steal second - before the Senators scored eight runs in the fifth and knocked him out of the game. Four of the runs were unearned after shortstop Pedro Florimon's two-out error. Bill Rhinehart followed with a three-run homer, and Tyler Moore hit a solo shot....

Scott to undergo surgery tomorrow (Vlad and Izzy updates)
Outfielder Luke Scott will undergo surgery tomorrow to repair a tear in his right labrum. Dr. James Andrews will perform the procedure in Florida. Scott played in one game after completing his injury rehab assignment last week. The Orioles shut him down again and returned him to the disabled list. Scott confirmed the next day that he was done for the season. He had to decide whether to undergo surgery, which could entail a four-to-six month rest and rehab process. By having the procedure...

Construction begins on Brooks Robinson statue

Construction begins on Brooks Robinson statue
Construction has started on a bronze statue of Hall of Fame third baseman Brooks Robinson that will be positioned on the plaza between Washington Boulevard and Russell Street, directly across from the northwest side of Camden Yards. Henry A. Rosenberg Jr., a friend of Robinson's for more than 30 years, is spearheading the project. The Babe Ruth Birthplace Foundation is providing administrative support and expertise. In other words, Robinson's glove won't be on his right hand. The statue...

Bobby Bundy wins league honor again (and note)

Bobby Bundy wins league honor again (and note)
Single-A Frederick pitcher Bobby Bundy was named the Carolina League's Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season. In two starts, Bundy was 2-0 with a 0.56 ERA, five hits allowed and 15 strikeouts in 16 innings. Last night, Bundy held Myrtle Beach to one unearned run and two hits in seven innings. Bundy, an eighth-round pick in the 2008 draft, also was honored for the week of May 16-22. If this continues, he'll be known as a lot more than Dylan's brother. Bundy looks like a...

Quick takes

Quick takes
A couple of quick thoughts for an off-day and night. Feel free to leave your comment and/or question. * Matt Wieters was an All-Star and J.J. Hardy had a great run at bat for a while there and has been stellar at short, but Adam Jones has been the Orioles best player this year. Over the last nine games, he is batting .333 with five homers and 11 RBIs. His second half OPS is 1.074. He said the other night how he really wants to have a big second half. Buck Showalter has often talked about the...

Finding relief in late innings could get much harder

Finding relief in late innings could get much harder
I'm thinking of running to the grocery store today and buying a container of clam dip to go with my trade chips. If I hear the phrase "trade chips" one more time, I'm folding and going home. You see, it's annoying to me whether I'm using a snack or poker analogy. It's annoying each time I read, via Twitter or a blog, another roll call of scouts who attended a particular game. Most of it amounts to nothing, but it's that time of the year. The last day of July is almost upon us. The...

Zach Britton in Bowie: Working to get better and return to the Orioles

Zach Britton in Bowie: Working to get better and return to the Orioles
In mid-May, Zach Britton was 5-2 with an ERA of 2.14 over his first nine major league starts. No one could have predicted then that less than two months later he would be back in the minor leagues. His time at Double-A Bowie could soon be coming to an end, though, as Britton gets set to make his third start for the Baysox at home tonight against Harrisburg. He still has fresh in his mind the memory of that start July 8 at Boston, where he gave up six hits and eight runs over just 2/3 of an...

Limited tickets available for Aug. 12 O's Hall of Fame luncheon
It's not too late to purchase a ticket for the Aug. 12 Oriole Advocates Hall of Fame luncheon. Former Orioles shortstop Mike Bordick and longtime head athletic trainer Richie Bancells will be honored at the event, which begins at noon on the sixth floor of the B&O Warehouse at Camden Yards. Bordick, who compiled the highest fielding percentage by a shortstop in club history during his six seasons, will be the 49th inductee into the Orioles Hall of Fame. Bancells, in his 35th season with the...

The luncheon begins at noon and will take place on the sixth floor. In Bowie, Guerrero and Izturis both say they are ready to return to the Orioles
BOWIE, Md. - Both Vlad Guerrero and Cesar Izturis got four at-bats with one hit each and left the game in the seventh inning tonight at Double-A Bowie. Both later said they felt good and they are hoping the Orioles decide to activate them in time to play Tuesday at Toronto. Izturis had several duties here tonight: player, postgame interview subject, then interpreter for Guerrero's interview. "(Guerrero) feels great," Izturis said in the Baysox clubhouse during the eighth inning of the...

Not every key move at the trading deadline is a big deal

Not every key move at the trading deadline is a big deal
Trade speculation will fly furiously as Sunday's non-waiver trade deadline approaches. But if history is an indication, there will be plenty of trades made, as well. Last season, from July 25-31, there were 25 trades made, and the most significant were trades that didn't make headlines. The two best acquisitions were by the San Francisco Giants, who got lefty reliever Javier Lopez from the Pittsburgh Pirates and Ramon Ramirez from the Boston Red Sox. The two were key to the Giants' World...

Matthew Taylor: Reliever-to-rotation move used to be a baseball norm

Matthew Taylor: Reliever-to-rotation move used to be a baseball norm
Nowadays, it seems unusual for a reliever to take the mound as a starter. You typically don't serve shutdown sauce as a first course. Nevertheless, that's exactly what the Orioles are doing as Alfredo Simon, the 2010 team leader in saves, has recorded consecutive quality starts with 13.2 innings pitched and four runs allowed against the Indians and Angels. Meanwhile, there continues to be talk of Jim Johnson following Simon into the rotation. The reliever-turned-starter model speaks to...
