Matt Albers has retired all four batters he's faced today since replacing starter Andrew Miller in the sixth inning. He's gotten two ground balls and struck out two.Albers has allowed no runs or hits, walked one and struck out seven in 4 1/3 innings against the Orioles this season. His ERA this summer is down to 2.29, and I doubt that many Red Sox fans are concerned whether his weight is up.The Orioles non-tendered Albers in December, and the Red Sox signed him 14 days after he was granted free agency. He's always had good stuff, but he couldn't display it with any consistency with the Orioles. And each bad outing would raise more concerns about his conditioning and the tear in his right shoulder.Meanwhile, Jake Arrieta became the second consecutive Orioles starter to go seven innings, but he stands to be the loser today after allowing three runs and nine hits. He didn't issue a walk for the first time this season, and only the second time in his career.Mark Hendrickson loaded the bases with no outs in the eighth and walked Carl Crawford to force in a run. And here comes Mark Worrell, again brought into a game with the sacks full and no outs.Update: The results couldn't have been more different. Worrell got two strikeouts and a fly ball to escape the jam. Very impressive. He also circled the mound so many times, he might have killed the grass.
Early this season, it looked like Orioles minor league pitcher Dan Klein might be at Triple-A or possibly even with the Orioles by now. But instead, he is spending these days in Sarasota, Fla., rehabbing a small SLAP tear in his right labrum.
The doctors say surgery is not necessary and Klein, who last pitched in a game June 1 for Double-A Bowie, is in his fourth week in Sarasota, but has not yet been cleared to begin a throwing program.
"I am still kind of in the rehab and strengthening...
The Orioles today announced that they have reinstated outfielder Luke Scott from the 15-day disabled list and optioned outfield Matt Angle to Triple-A Norfolk.
Scott, 33, is hitting .223 (46-206) with nine home runs and 22 RBIs in 63 games with the Orioles this season. He batted .500 (5-10) with a double and three home runs in three rehab games with Double-A Bowie .
Angle, 25, made his major league debut on Sunday against Cleveland after having his contract selected earlier in the day. He...
Tonight's game got a little more interesting, and not because I'm placing odds on how many innings I survive before I collapse on the press box floor in a huge puddle of sweat.
Did I hear something about a 115-degree heat index?
But the good news is sportswriters voted back when Camden Yards was being built to have an open-air press box. No air conditioning. Because, you know, everybody likes heat stroke.
Anyway, the Orioles must decide whether to activate Luke Scott from the disabled...
The Orioles have a problem and it is a mystery to most. On the Internet and the airwaves, the new clarion call is the Orioles' need to improve their scouting and player development systems. Well, that is great, but I am willing to be dollars to doughnuts that the callers and posters do not know the first thing they are talking about. That is to say, they feel something needs to change, but I doubt that many out there know what the job of a regional crosschecker is.
Of course, they are...
Luke Scott hit his second home run tonight in three injury rehab games at Double-A Bowie.
Scott launched a two-run shot to center field in the third inning, allowing Greg Miclat to score and temporarily giving Bowie the lead. Trenton tied the game in the top of the fourth.
Scott has three RBIs tonight. He drove in a run with a ground ball in the first inning.
Scott has homered twice, singled and walked twice since joining the Baysox on Sunday. Before tonight, he hadn't played since Monday...
My guess is the Orioles will give serious consideration to activating Luke Scott from the disabled list this weekend.
After being shut down for two days with lingering discomfort in his right shoulder, Scott homered twice and drove in six runs tonight in seven innings at Double-A Bowie.
It appears that he's done for the night. I don't think another at-bat is necessary.
Scott drove in a run in the first inning with a ground ball, launched a two-run homer to center field in the third,...
Orioles outfielder Luke Scott will continue his injury rehab assignment tonight after being shut down for a few days.
Scott will bat third and serve as the designated hitter for Double-A Bowie, as he's done in two previous games.
Scott has homered, singled and walked twice since joining the Baysox. He hasn't played since Monday night.
Though eligible to come off the disabled list two days ago, Scott wasn't deemed ready because of persistent discomfort in his right shoulder related to a...
Early in the season, Double-A Bowie outfielder Xavier Avery was piling up the stolen bases. He now has 26 to rank second in steals among O's minor leaguers.
Now Bowie's Greg Miclat is showing the way with 32 stolen bases. That, by the way, is in 32 attempts. Yes, Miclat is 32-for-32 and has not been caught stealing this year.
Miclat stole four bases in April, 13 in May, six in June and he has nine in July.
The second baseman, a fifth-round draft pick in 2008 out of the University of...
As a proud partner of the Baltimore Grand Prix, the Orioles are committed to assisting in the logistical planning surrounding the Labor Day weekend races. The Orioles recognize the importance that this event plays to the City of Baltimore, area hotels, restaurants and businesses, and the tens of thousands of fans who will be a part of Baltimore Grand Prix weekend.
In an effort to minimize the level of inconvenience for Orioles fans and Baltimore Grand Prix planners, the Orioles, in conjunction...
He can't be sure how long his time in the major leagues will last, but after playing more than 500 games in the Orioles' farm system, outfielder Matt Angle was excited to get his first call to the big leagues over the weekend.
The 25-year-old Angle, a seventh-round draft pick out of Ohio State in 2007, was batting .266 with seven doubles, four homers, 20 steals and 29 RBIs in 81 games with Triple-A Norfolk.
But he was batting .320 since June 1 and hit .380 in his last 16 games with the...
When Pat Gillick enters the Baseball Hall of Fame in inductions ceremonies at Cooperstown, N.Y., on Sunday, his tenure as the Orioles' general manager from 1995-1998 will be a footnote in a storied career that has seen him win two World Series at the helm of the Toronto Blue Jays and another as the GM of the Philadelphia Phillies.
Baltimore fans remember Gillick as the front office boss the last time the O's went to the playoffs, the last time there was a winning season to cheer. And Gillick...
After getting shutout in a game where the opponent starter walked six batters, Adam Jones was not a happy camper.
"We should have had runs off their starter. We put ourselves in the (right) situation, that's all you can ask for," Jones said.
He was asked if it was tough to pick up the ball out of the hand of Boston starter Andrew Miller, who pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings as the Sox won 4-0 to take the series.
"No, not at all. We should have put so many runs on. He should not have been...
After a four-start stretch where he didn't pitch past five innings, Jake Arrieta produced his first quality start since mid-June today in the Orioles' 4-0 loss to Boston.
"Think overall, did a good job of pounding the zone and forcing the issue of contact," Arrieta said after giving up nine hits and three runs over seven innings. "Making them earn their hits and they put some good swings on pitches. Several guys in that lineup are hot right now.
"Ellsbury is the guy that hurt me today....
Presented with a chance to win a series against the American League East leaders, the Orioles could not get any runs today off Andrew Miller, a pitcher with a career 5.83 ERA that is averaging nearly six walks per nine innings this year.
The Red Sox won the series finale 4-0 in front of 35,174 on a sun-splashed afternoon at Camden Yards. The Orioles were held to just two hits by four Sox pitchers.
Miller had control issues today also. He walked six batters in 5 2/3 scoreless innings. He had...
Yesterday's shutout included, the Orioles have scored more runs over the past seven games than they have over any seven-game stretch this season.
(OK, that's not completely true. During interleague play, the O's also scored 39 runs over the seven games from June 21-26. But four of those games came in National League parks with Vladimir Guerrero relegated to the bench.)
Sure, seven games seems like an arbitrary number and, yes, it is clearly can be described with the phrase "small sample...
The Orioles had plenty of scoring opportunities today, which makes it more frustrating that they didn't score in a 4-0 loss to the Red Sox before 35,174.
Manager Buck Showalter talked about the following:
Buck Showalter talks about the O's 4-0 loss to the Red Sox
On whether this is the best he's seen Jake Arrieta:
"I've seen him as good, if not better. He's pitched some good games for us this year, and in the past I've seen him like that. He deserved a better fate. They pitched a...
You have to wonder, if, as this game goes on, the Orioles will be able to make Red Sox starting pitcher Andrew Miller pay for his wildness.
Miller had walked nine batters without a strikeout over 7 2/3 in his last two starts, one of which was against the Orioles.
He walked the bases loaded with one out today in the last of the second, but Craig Tatum came up and inexplicably swung at the first pitch. He later grounded into an inning-ending double play on a 2-2 pitch that was out of the strike...
Red Sox left-hander Andrew Miller has littered the bases in this game, but the Orioles can't clean up.
Miller didn't allow a hit until catcher Craig Tatum bounced a single up the middle with one out in the fifth. Tatum came within a foot or so of dropping a double down the left field line earlier in the at-bat.
Miller walked a batter in the first. He walked the bases loaded in the second. He walked a batter in the third. He hasn't exactly been sharp - unless you consider a stick of butter...
Orioles pitcher Jake Arrieta will take the mound this afternoon against Boston looking to pitch the Orioles to a series win over the AL East leaders.
After a stretch where he has given up 14 earned runs over 14 1/3 innings his past three starts, Arrieta has been working on some slight mechanical adjustments with his windup with pitching coach Rick Adair.
Manager Buck Showalter said there is a clear reason why Adair approached Arrieta with the adjustment.
"Fastball command," Showalter said....
