The Orioles and Yankees are fielding lineups today that conjure images of a split-squad game in spring training.
Anyone know if it's raining in Sarasota or Tampa?
The Orioles found the strength to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning, and the rally started with Matt Angle slapping a single into center field.
Angle stole second, took third on a ground ball and scored on Nick Markakis' grounder to second base. Markakis has 65 RBIs this season.
If Angle is going to make the roster in 2012,...
I couldn't be happier that I've been refreshing Twitter since 9:30 a.m. waiting for a lineup that arrived at noon.
Stay hot, Roch.
Manager Buck Showalter is doing some massive substituting and rearranging after last night's game ended at 2:15 a.m. You won't recognize this lineup.
For the Orioles:
Matt Angle CF
Robert Andino SS
Nick Markakis DH
Mark Reynolds 1B
Nolan Reimold RF
Chris Davis 3B
Ryan Adams 2B
Kyle Hudson LF
Craig Tatum C
Zach Britton LHP
In a game that began at 11:08 p.m. after a four-hour plus rain delay and ended at 2:15 a.m., the Yankees beat the Orioles 5-3 to take the first two games of this series.
The game was played in a steady rain and the grounds crew had to enter the field often in the later innings to work on the wet surface.
The Orioles fell behind 2-0, but tied it up on a Matt Wieters two-run homer in the sixth. They fell behind again 3-2, but a Nick Markakis RBI double tied it in the seventh.
Buck Showalter...
The Orioles have had a tough season in many respects. Many, many respects. But there is one area in which they've been not only the best team in baseball, but the best team in baseball by far. It's their pitchers - when they're hitters.
The best-hitting pitching staff in the National League belongs to the Arizona Diamondbacks, who have a collective .190/.230/.257 line. That's obviously awful by regular standards (and one of the main reasons why I think the DH should be universal), but on...
Anticipating more rain today, the Yankee Stadium grounds crew has installed a diving board and ladder behind the mound.
Matt Angle had trouble tracking the ball in left field last night, but only because he was distracted by the shark's fin.
The decision to play or postpone the game rested in the clammy hands of the umpires, since the Orioles were making their final trip to the Bronx. And they really, really wanted to work.
It was raining buckets and the forecast for the rest of the night...
The Orioles endured another delay tonight, this one lasting 13 minutes as the Yankee Stadium grounds crew applied a drying agent around home plate and on the mound.
As if that's going to do any good.
The crew should have dumped a few sacks of it on the warning track.
Matt Angle lost his footing while trying to track Francisco Cervelli's fly ball in the fifth inning, breaking back and in and sideways before dropping it and allowing Jorge Posada to score for a 2-0 lead.
Posada reached on...
Proving he can hit even at 1 a.m. Matt Wieters two-run homer in the top of the sixth tied this game at 2-2.
The game that began at 11:08 p.m. continues to be played in a rainstorm at Yankee Stadium.
Wieters is 2-for-3 tonight. Over his last 15 games, he is batting .382 (21-for-55) with six homers, five doubles and 17 RBIs. He has now driven in at least one run in 11 of his last 15 games.
Wieters has three homers on the year against New York.
Vlad Guerrero has two hits in the game, but Chris...
If an East Coast baseball game starts at 11 p.m. will anyone still be up to watch it? Or blog about it?
Is this really in the best interests of the fans?
You know the answer to that, so don't even worry about answering that one.
Hey, got to protect the integrity of the pennant face, even if it comes at the expense of everyone's sanity.
Since it seems they are going to try and play this game, here are some stats to ponder.
Orioles' starting pitchers have given up 14 earned runs in 11 1/3...
The Orioles today announced that they have recalled infielder Josh Bell from Triple-A Norfolk and infielder Pedro Florimon from Double-A Bowie, selected the contracts of right-handed pitcher Jeremy Accardo and left-handed Clay Rapada from the Tides and activated infielder/outfielder Chris Davis from the disabled list. To make room for Accardo and Rapada on the 40-man roster, infielder Blake Davis and left-handed pitcher Mark Hendrickson have been designated for assignment.
Bell, 24, batted...
It took 3 1/2 hours for the crew chief to decide that the Orioles and Yankees could start their game tonight.
Tack on another 30 minutes for the Yankee Stadium grounds crew to get the field ready, and we're looking at a projected 11 p.m. start time.
The decision to play or postpone rested in the hands of the umpires, since the Orioles are making their last visit to New York. And they're in no hurry to send everyone home.
MASN's Gary Thorne says we've got a 30-minute window before more...
It's been raining all day in New York and the forecast calls for rain all night, but here's the Orioles' lineup, just in case they're able to play this game and avoid a doubleheader tomorrow. It includes Chris Davis at third base and Matt Angle in left field. Nolan Reimold remains on the bench.
For the Orioles:
Matt Angle LF
J.J. Hardy SS
Nick Markakis RF
Adam Jones CF
Vladimir Guerrero DH
Mark Reynolds 1B
Matt Wieters C
Chris Davis 3B
Robert Andino 2B
Tommy Hunter RHP
For the...
If rain forces a postponement in one of the two remaining games at Yankee Stadium, I suggest an extreme split-doubleheader Thursday. Play one game in the Bronx and one at Camden Yards.
The two teams have to go back to Baltimore for a makeup game, much to the chagrin of Yankees manager Joe Girardi and everyone else on the payroll. May as well play two.
OK, that idea won't fly, but at least I'm thinking outside the box.
Orioles manager Buck Showalter indicated yesterday during his postgame...
Even though they lost eight of their last 10 regular season games, the Single-A Frederick Keys are back in the playoffs and will host Potomac tomorrow night in Game 1 of a best-of-five league semifinal series.
Frederick finished with the best record in the Carolina League at 80-59 and that is also Frederick's best record ever. The Keys are in the playoffs for the fifth time in seven seasons and are looking for a fourth championship after winning Mills Cup titles in 1990, 2005 and 2007.
The...
I told you earlier that left-hander Clay Rapada would join the Orioles in New York. He won't be alone.
A team official confirmed that the Orioles also will purchase reliever Jeremy Accardo's contract from Triple-A Norfolk, meaning they will have to clear two spots on the 40-man roster. Third baseman Josh Bell and Double-A Bowie infielder Pedro Florimon, both on the 40-man, will be recalled.
As expected, first baseman Chris Davis will come off the disabled list after going 3-for-6 in two...
It was kind of a strange day, the final day of the regular season in the Double-A Eastern League. Bowie entered Monday a half-game behind Richmond for a playoff berth.
Richmond took the lead in its game, 2-1 at Altoona with an eighth-inning homer that was followed by a rain delay. At that point, observers in the press box at Bowie figured if the game got stopped by rain there, it would revert to the previous inning and remain tied at 1-1. That would open the door for Bowie to win its game and...
For those of you who know how yesterday's game went, it was an offensive shootout that unfortunately ended badly for the Orioles (yet again). It all started with Brian Matusz who lasted only 1 1/3 innings or, to put it better, four outs. In that short outing, he gave up five hits, five earned runs and two walks.
So far this season, he is 1-7 with a 9.84 ERA. His longest outing of the season was 6 2/3 innings in which he gave up eight hits and six runs in the loss. In his 10 starts this...
BOWIE, Md. - The Orioles confirmed after today's game that Chris Davis will come off the disabled list and rejoin the team tomorrow in New York.
After playing two injury rehabilitation games at Double-A Bowie, Davis said his strained right shoulder is doing very well.
"I feel great," Davis said after going 1-for-3 for the Baysox today and 2-for-3 Sunday. "I think today was the bigger test, playing third base. I had a bunt play where I had to throw across my body and use my arm without my...
The Orioles will make another roster move by purchasing Clay Rapada's contract from Triple-A Norfolk.
Rapada will join the Orioles in New York, with Norfolk's season ending today with an 8-5 win over Durham.
Rapada was 0-1 with a 3.92 ERA in 26 games with the Tides. He posted a 7.30 ERA in 22 games with the Orioles before being designated for assignment, but left-handed batters were 4-for-35 with 13 strikeouts against him. Right-handers batted .692.
Manager Buck Showalter and president of...
BOWIE, Md.- Even though the Double-A Baysox are winning here against Erie by a 2-1 score, the word has come in from Altoona that the game there has been called by rain and Richmond wins 2-1 in eight innings. The Richmond win sends the Flying Squirrels to the Eastern League playoffs and eliminates Bowie.
Wes Hodges hit a homer for Richmond in the top of the eighth just a few moments before a rain delay halted play. Even though Atltoona did not bat in the last of the eighth, Richmond is declared...
Brian Matusz got back into the rotation today. Now we're left to wonder again whether he'll stay in it.
Matusz was charged with five runs in 1 1/3 innings today, the last one scoring while he sat in the dugout. Chris Jakubauskas served up a grand slam to Robinson Cano with one out in the second to give New York an 8-5 lead.
Just another day at Yankee Stadium. You're surprised?
Matusz allowed five hits, walked two and struck out three. He threw 46 pitches, 24 for strikes.
His fastball...
