Gonzalez on Gonzalez

Gonzalez on Gonzalez
Left-hander Michael Gonzalez allowed an inherited runner to score tonight, and he was charged with two runs of his own to raise his ERA to 13.50. Michael Gonzalez talks about how good he felt on the mound even though he had a tough night against the Red Sox "I feel bad about giving up that run of J.J.'s. I didn't want to give up (Johnson's) run. That's what I feel bad about," he said. "The results, seriously, I don't feel bad or frustrated whatsoever. What I wanted was to go out...

Postgame Showalter

Postgame Showalter
Manager Buck Showalter talked about pitchers Brad Bergesen, Michael Gonzalez and Jim Johnson following tonight's 6-2 loss to the Red Sox. Buck Showalter sits down with the media to talk about the O's 6-2 loss to Boston On Bergesen: "Pretty good, pretty good. He gave us a good chance to win, something we talked about before the game. He made some pitches when he had to. I think Mark (Connor) was looking at six or seven balls that they hit hard. They had a swinging bunt and a couple...

J. Johnson gives up run, S. Johnson shines

J. Johnson gives up run, S. Johnson shines
The Redskins are on the clock. Owner Daniel Snyder wants a pass rusher. He's trying to draft Dexter Manley. Jim Johnson allowed the tie-breaking run with two outs in the seventh on Dustin Pedroia's second infield hit, a swinging bunt that Mark Reynolds tried unsuccessfully to barehand. Carl Crawford scored after leading off the inning with a double. Double-A Bowie gained a split of its doubleheader by beating Akron in the nightcap, 4-2. Steve Johnson, returned to the Baysox's roster...

Updating here and there (Bergy done)

Updating here and there (Bergy done)
I just found out that I'm on the clock, so I better hurry and file an entry. I hope you consider this blog a need pick. Brad Bergesen has held the Red Sox to two runs over five innings, both RBIs coming from Adrian Gonzalez. He's allowed four hits, walked one and struck out three. Bergesen has retired seven in a row. He's thrown 68 pitches, 45 for strikes. Before tonight, Bergesen was 0-3 with a 5.40 ERA and had allowed 10 earned runs (13 total) and 19 hits in 14 2/3 innings. Jon Lester...

Lee cracks goose egg with RISP (updated)

Lee cracks goose egg with RISP (updated)
Derrek Lee was 0-for-14 with runners in scoring position before lining a single into left field in the bottom of the first inning. Brian Roberts trotted home and the Orioles tied the Red Sox, 1-1. Lee has three RBIs this season, the other two coming on his only home run on April 6. OK, so he was due. Lee had three hits last night and was batting .303 on this homestand before tonight. Roberts walked, moved to second on Nick Markakis' single and stole third base, increasing his total number...

Matusz: "Big step forward today" (updated)

Matusz: "Big step forward today" (updated)
The news keeps getting better regarding Orioles left-hander Brian Matusz. As I wrote in my last entry, Matusz threw a 35-pitch bullpen session this afternoon and said the pain and irritation are gone. He threw fastballs, he spun the ball, and he walked away feeling like it won't be much longer before he's ready to start for the Orioles. "It went really well," he said. "I threw two-seam, four-seam fastballs, working in and out, and threw a few changeups and a couple curveballs. Got a good...

Injury updates

Injury updates
It's time once again for the injury update portion of my blog. Sit back and enjoy. Brian Matusz threw 35 pitches in today's bullpen session, including his two- and four-seamer, and a couple changeups and curveballs. He told reporters that he didn't feel any pain. You couldn't wipe the smile off his face. I'll post his comments later. Shortstop J.J. Hardy felt much better today after experiencing some soreness yesterday. He took 15 dry swings and hit 20 balls off a tee. He also ran some...

Matusz throwing, sun shining (w/ Orioles lineup)

Matusz throwing, sun shining (w/ Orioles lineup)
Left-hander Brian Matusz is in the middle of his bullpen session as I type this blog entry. He's on the rubber, and he's supposed to throw his curveball, as well as his fastball. Looks and sounds like a real side session to me. Pitching coach Mark Connor is standing next to him. Chris Jakubauskas also is scheduled to throw a bullpen session today. I was frightened by the bright light here at Camden Yards before I realized it's the sun. The tarp is off the field and the batting cage is...

Check out this audio of Machado's latest homer (updated with minor league moves)
It was the sixth inning last night at Perdue Stadium in Salisbury. The Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds trailed the Savannah Sand Gnats by a 2-1 score. Orioles 2010 first-round draft Manny Machado came up to bat. He had homered the last two nights. The count went to 3-0. Shorebirds broadcaster Bret Lasky then called the play-by-play for what happened next on 960 AM The Sports Animal. Machado hits tape-measure homer by smelewski Bret tells me that long-time followers of the Shorebirds say...

Two managers, two different approaches

Two managers, two different approaches
Orioles manager Buck Showalter and Terry Francona of the Red Sox seem to be taking different approaches with some hitters in their respective lineups these days. For instance, Showalter is staying the course with his hitters. Even though various players have struggled and slumped this year, most nights the Orioles' lineup has remained the same. Derrek Lee has batted third every game this year and the first four in the order - Brian Roberts, Nick Markakis, Lee and Vlad Guerrero - have batted...

Anthony Amobi: Put any worries about Wieters on hold

Anthony Amobi: Put any worries about Wieters on hold
Over the past few months, fans and sports pundits have wondered whether or not Matt Wieters is a bust - despite the Orioles catcher only having played in the major leagues for less than two full seasons. I remember the Friday night of his major league debut like it was yesterday. It was a warm one in June 2009 and 42,000 fans jammed Oriole Park at Camden Yards to get a glimpse of a man who could potentially become the next Baltimore legend. We all cheered wildly for the young man. The...

Is Orioles rotation starting to get on a roll?

Is Orioles rotation starting to get on a roll?
Jeremy Guthrie was the latest Orioles starter to put together a solid outing in a stretch where the club is getting some real solid starting pitching. In this series versus Boston, Guthrie and Zach Britton have combined to allow just one run over 12 innings. Over the last eight games, Orioles starters have posted seven quality starts and pitched to an ERA of 3.26. That has lowered the ERA for the starters on the year from 4.68 to 4.11. Four different pitchers have contributed to the run and...

About last night ...

About last night ...
I had to remind myself that the Orioles won last night. It felt a little bit like a loss after the Red Sox scored four runs in the top of the eighth. Fortunately, there also was a bottom of the eighth. This was the type of game that normally would have ended in defeat. We've lived it too many times over the last 13 seasons. But the Orioles are a feisty bunch, and that's one of my favorite qualities. Manager Buck Showalter brought a resume and attitude when he walked through the doors last...

More postgame chatter after 5-4 win

More postgame chatter after 5-4 win
So what does tonight's 5-4 win say about the Orioles? Let Luke Scott answer that one. "That we have a lot of heart," he said. "We've got to continue to play that way, as far as never give up, play the game nine innings hard, and at the end of the day if we're on top, great, let's celebrate, enjoy it for the night. If we don't, let's get ready for tomorrow. "You look around this clubhouse, these guys don't give up. There's a lot of heart on this team. We've taken our licks. We...

Showalter speaks after 5-4 win

Showalter speaks after 5-4 win
Manager Buck Showalter could be excused if he felt dizzy from riding that roller coaster in the eighth inning. The Orioles lead by four. The game is tied. The Orioles lead by one. The Orioles win by one. Showalter was impressed with the way his club handled the adversity. Buck Showalter meets with the media following the O's 5-4 victory over the Red Sox "I think it started a little bit with that extra-inning game against the Yankees," he said. "Our guys didn't panic and we saw some...

O's pull it out but Guthrie gets no decision

O's pull it out but Guthrie gets no decision
The Orioles lost the lead, but not the game. I feel bad for Jeremy Guthrie, who just can't seem to get a win, even when he doesn't give up a run. After losing a late 4-0 lead, the Orioles picked up the tiebreaking run on a Vladimir Guerrero RBI single to center in the last of the eighth to edge Boston 5-4 at Camden Yards. Guthrie pitched six scoreless innings tonight, left with a 4-0 lead and still did not win. What else can the guy do? Koji Uehara as closer talk could cool after he gave...

Bullpen implosion (updated)

Bullpen implosion (updated)
Jeremy Guthrie will have to settle for a no-decision. I thought manager Buck Showalter made the right call bringing back Jeremy Accardo for the eighth inning. Accardo threw seven pitches, all of them for strikes, while cruising through the seventh. No reason to pass the baton. Well, Showalter has done it a few times in the eighth. Accardo was done after Jacoby Ellsbury's leadoff single and Dustin Pedroia's walk. Clay Rapada replaced him and gave up a run-scoring single to the left-handed...

Guthrie's done, Scott doesn't wear one

Guthrie's done, Scott doesn't wear one
Jeremy Guthrie's pitch count forced him out of tonight's game, not the Boston Red Sox. Well, the Red Sox made him throw 111 pitches, but they couldn't score off him. He scattered seven hits, walked one and struck out six. Jeremy Accardo will pitch the seventh with the Orioles holding a 4-0 lead. Guthrie has allowed two runs or fewer in four of his five starts, but he lost three straight before tonight. Talk about a deceiving record. Luke Scott faced Josh Beckett again in the bottom of...

A bloop and two blasts

A bloop and two blasts
The Red Sox wish they could have that short fly ball that Derrek Lee hit back. They failed to catch that pop with one out in the fourth and that should have been an out. Instead, an out later, Luke Scott came up and blasted a Eutaw Street, two-run homer. Adam Jones followed with a solo shot that just made it out to left center. If the Sox catch that ball, you can make a case the Orioles get no runs in that inning. Scott's blast was the 53rd onto Eutaw Street in the history of Camden Yards...

Scott and Jones go back-to-back

Scott and Jones go back-to-back
The Orioles gave Jeremy Guthrie a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning. Somebody pass the smelling salts. Luke Scott hit a two-run shot with two outs, the ball traveling an estimated 426 feet before landing on Eutaw St. Adam Jones followed with a drive that barely cleared the left field fence, but it also counted. Scott admired his shot, and Josh Beckett made sure the entire Orioles dugout knew that he didn't appreciate it. Plate umpire Fieldin Culbreth had to calm him down. Could get very...
