Minor league notes on Hudson, Rowell, Mummey and more

Minor league notes on Hudson, Rowell, Mummey and more
A couple of notes from the O's minors to pass along. Outfielder Kyle Hudson has returned to Triple-A Norfolk to take the roster spot of Matt Angle, who joined the Orioles today. Hudson was batting .308 in 28 games at Double-A Bowie. He was with the Tides earlier and between May 20 and June 26, hit .188 in 24 Norfolk games. Billy Rowell remains on the disabled list at Double-A Bowie, but this week did begin an injury rehab assignment with the Gulf Coast League Orioles. He's been on the DL...

Andino the unlikely homer hero (Markakis more likely)

Andino the unlikely homer hero (Markakis more likely)
If an Oriole was going to hit a three-run homer today, it didn't figure to be second baseman Robert Andino. On your list of candidates, he would have ranked pretty low. Andino's three-run shot off Indians starter Jeanmar Gomez gave the Orioles a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. The ball traveled an estimated 362 feet. It didn't clear the left field fence by much, but it got there. Andino has two home runs this season, the other coming on April 30. He was hitting .176 with...

Atkins teetering, Jones homering, Angle starting (updated)

Atkins teetering, Jones homering, Angle starting (updated)
Mitch Atkins has thrown 50 pitches in two innings. Mark Hendrickson began to warm with two outs in the second, but Atkins struck out Carlos Santana to strand two runners. Atkins lasted only 1 2/3 innings in his last start in Boston, so he's cleared that mark. But he won't be around much longer if he continues to labor. Seven of the 13 batters he's faced have reached base. Adam Jones, batting cleanup today, crushed a Jeanmar Gomez slider for his 15th home run, reducing the Indians' lead...

Home runs continue to haunt Atkins

Home runs continue to haunt Atkins
Mitch Atkins gave up three home runs to the Boston Red Sox in the second inning of his most recent start at Fenway Park. He's allowed two homers to the Indians in the first inning today. The long ball could lead to another short day for Atkins. Travis Hafner and Carlos Santana went back-to-back with two outs. Manager Buck Showalter argued that the ball was foul, but the call stood after umpires reviewed it. Santana's ball is the 56th to land on Eutaw St. in Camden Yards history, the 32nd...

Orioles place Guerrero on DL; recall Angle, Patton

Orioles place Guerrero on DL; recall Angle, Patton
The Orioles announced today they have placed designated hitter Vladimir Guerrero on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 11, with a fractured right wrist. The club has also recalled outfielder Matt Angle and LHP Troy Patton from Triple-A Norfolk. Angle, 25, hit .266 with four home runs, 29 RBI and 20 stolen bases in 81 games for the Tides. He batted .380 in his last 16 games with Norfolk, hitting safely in 14 of those contests. The Orioles' 7th-round selection in the 2007...

The stat man

The stat man
I would say I had too much time on my hands, although that is really not the case, but I have still put together some stats for your perusal. Some may actually be interesting or informative in some way. * The Orioles had just one single last night among their hits and had a season-high seven extra-base hits. They had six doubles and a homer in the win over Cleveland. * The Orioles have 22 hits in this series and 15 have gone for extra bases with 11 doubles and four home runs. * Nick...

A few pregame notes (and Indians lineup)

A few pregame notes (and Indians lineup)
Manager Buck Showalter decided to give Matt Angle his first start today for two reasons: He didn't want Angle's debut to come tomorrow night against Boston knuckleballer Tim Wakefield, and he didn't want Angle to sit for two days. Angle worked with outfield coach Wayne Kirby this morning, taking fly balls in left. Angle played every outfield position in spring training. Showalter is hoping that Vladimir Guerrero will be ready to come off the disabled list when eligible on July 26....

Patton kept putting up zeroes and the call to Baltimore finally came

Patton kept putting up zeroes and the call to Baltimore finally came
Troy Patton will admit that there was some frustration for him recently. He was putting up really good numbers for Triple-A Norfolk but watching other pitchers get called to Baltimore. That included other lefties like Pedro Viola and Mark Hendrickson. Patton was happy for those guys, but wondering if his chance would come. It has and now he is back with the Orioles, officially recalled from Norfolk after the game last night. With the Tides, the 25-year-old southpaw was pitching mostly out of...

This time, Gonzalez gets the save for the Orioles

This time, Gonzalez gets the save for the Orioles
Moments after an Orlando Cabrera three-run double in the ninth cut the Orioles' 6-2 lead to 6-5 last night, lefty reliever Michael Gonzalez started jogging toward the mound. You know many Orioles fans had to be holding their breath as they have seen Gonzalez struggle for much of his two seasons on the team. Brought here to serve as a closer, he had blown three of four previous saves chances in an O's uniform. He had just one save chance this year and didn't close out that May 10 game with...

Quick update on Matusz

Quick update on Matusz
Orioles pitching coach Rick Adair received positive reports on left-hander Brian Matusz, who made his third start last night for Triple-A Norfolk and blanked Gwinnett on three hits over seven innings. Matusz walked two and struck out eight. Matusz's fastball mostly sat at 86 mph with the Orioles, but Adair said it averaged 88 mph and touched 90 last night. "He was good, better," Adair said. "His velocity on average was up a little bit. His changeup was good. He held runners. And...

Showalter speaks after 6-5 win

Showalter speaks after 6-5 win
Michael Gonzalez recorded his first save tonight since the third game of the 2010 season at Tropicana Field. Yes, it's been that long. Ending a nine-game losing streak is never easy. So what was it like for manager Buck Showalter to watch a starting pitcher throw strikes, go seven innings and give his team a chance to win? "Kind of reminds you of the formula," he said. "Obviously, Alfredo (Simon) was really good. Most innings, he's been. Pretty close to his pitch count. We were going...

More Simon and Matusz (O's end nine-game skid)

More Simon and Matusz (O's end nine-game skid)
Tonight's attendance: 24,835 Alfredo Simon became the second Orioles pitcher to complete seven innings in the last 29 games dating back to June 12. And he's in line for the win. It all starts with starting pitching. Simon allowed two runs and three hits, walked one and struck out five. He threw 79 pitches, 56 for strikes, before Koji Uehara replaced him to begin the eighth. This is Simon's longest outing since Sept. 23, 2008. He'll leave the team tomorrow night and fly to the Dominican...

Markakis beat Ripken, Robinson and Roberts to 1,000 hits

Markakis beat Ripken, Robinson and Roberts to 1,000 hits
Here is an impressive note about Nick Markakis, who reached the 1,000 career hit mark last night at Camden Yards with a third-inning single: Markakis got to 1,000 hits quicker than Hall of Fame Orioles Cal Ripken Jr. and Brooks Robinson and teammate Brian Roberts. Markakis: 1,000th hit in career game No. 875. Ripken: 1,000th hit in career game No. 894 at Yankee Stadium. Roberts: 1,000th hit in career game No. 895 at Wrigley Field. Robinson: 1,000th hit in career game No. 989 at Metropolitan...

Orioles option Viola to Double-A Bowie

Orioles option Viola to Double-A Bowie
The Orioles announced after tonight's game that they have optioned left-hander Pedro Viola to Double-A Bowie. Viola has appeared in four games for the Orioles and pitched to a 9.82 ERA (3.2IP, 4ER). A corresponding roster move will be announced tomorrow.

Orioles put Guerrero on DL, option Viola

Orioles put Guerrero on DL, option Viola
Why wait until tomorrow when you can announce your roster moves tonight? The Orioles placed Vladimir Guerrero on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 11, and optioned left-hander Pedro Viola to Double-A Bowie. Outfielder Matt Angle and left-hander Troy Patton have been recalled from Triple-A Norfolk and will be in uniform tomorrow afternoon. Patton will be used in long and middle relief. There are no current plans to place him in the rotation.

Simon steps up big as Orioles finally end losing streak

Simon steps up big as Orioles finally end losing streak
The Orioles needed a good starting pitching effort in the worst way and got one tonight from Alfredo Simon. They also needed a win in the worst way and got one as well. Nick Markakis hit a solo homer in the last of the sixth to break a 2-2 tie as the Orioles beat Cleveland 6-5 in front of 24,835 at Camden Yards to end a nine-game losing streak. Markakis added two doubles for a three extra-base hit game after not having an extra-base hit during his previous nine games. Markakis is batting...

Angle heading to Baltimore (Patton, too)

Angle heading to Baltimore (Patton, too)
Triple-A Norfolk outfielder Matt Angle, a seventh-round draft pick out of Ohio State in 2007, has left the Tides and is heading to Camden Yards. Angle, 25, could be officially recalled as a roster replacement for Vladimir Guerrero, who is expected to be placed on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured bone in his right hand. Guerrero was in manager Buck Showalter's office with president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail shortly before 6 p.m. The Orioles also will have an opening on...

Simon says: Produce a quality start

Simon says: Produce a quality start
Alfredo Simon is pitching a good one for the Orioles tonight. Probably don't need to remind any O's fan how badly needed this is - and has been. He has a 3-2 lead on the Indians through six and a half frames. He has allowed just three hits and two runs through seven innings. The O's have had just one pitcher go seven innings over the last 29 games. Oriole starting pitchers' ERA: 9.90 - in Cleveland series 13.08 - in last six games starting with Boston series 9.60 - in last 18 games,...

Updating Simon and Matusz (Markakis homers)

Updating Simon and Matusz (Markakis homers)
Alfredo Simon lost his shutout and the lead, but he got through the sixth inning, which is cause for celebration. I'm thinking about a parade down Pratt Street. Bring your own confetti. The Indians scored twice in the sixth on Michael Brantley's double, and Simon needed a diving stop by first baseman Derrek Lee and Adam Jones' catch at the center field fence to avoid further damage. Simon is only the third starter to get through six innings in the last 19 games. Jeremy Guthrie is the...
