Bragging rights for TCU and Texas Tech are on the line tonight when the Orioles' Jake Arrieta takes the mound against the Indians' Josh Tomlin.
OK, there's a lot more at stake than college pride.
Arrieta has made two starts since being skipped in the rotation because of an inflamed right elbow. He's allowed nine earned runs (10 total) and 12 hits in 9 1/3 innings, with six walks and six strikeouts.
Arrieta's ERA has risen to 4.90. The league average for starters is 3.85. And his WHIP...
It's a bit of a stretch I know, but will some Jake Arrieta stats work in his favor tonight as he and the Orioles look to break an eight-game losing streak versus Cleveland?
Arrieta and the Birds lead 2-1 after the second inning after Matt Wieters and Nolan Reimold hit solo homers in the last of the second. Wieters' homer to right-center leading off the inning was his ninth and traveled 390 feet, and came on a 3-1 pitch. Reimold took a 1-1 pitch out to left 402 feet off Josh Tomlin.
For...
Jake Arrieta is the next Orioles starter to try and give his team a quality start. He takes the mound tonight at Camden Yards against Cleveland.
The Orioles have had just two of them, one by Jeremy Guthrie and one by Mitch Atkins, in the last 17 games.
At one time, it seemed Arrieta was cranking out quality starts. Over his first nine starts, he went 5-1 with a 4.03 ERA and seven quality starts. But over his past nine outings, he is 4-5 with a 5.87 ERA and four quality starts.
His ERA is...
Jeremy Guthrie seemed pretty despondent after tonight's 8-4 loss. He didn't have much to say. And really, what's left to say when your team is 17 games below .500 and your own record is 3-13?
"I'm just not throwing the ball well," he said. "I haven't been going deep into games for a while."
Jeremy Guthrie isn't satisfied with his performance following the O's 8-4 loss
Guthrie was charged with six runs in five innings, raising his ERA to 4.45.
"I felt like I wasn't able to throw...
Good morning, Birdland!
As some of you may know, if you keep a calendar, my name is James Baker and I write primarily for Oriole Post. Pete Kerzel of MASNsports.com asked the new guest bloggers to give a little intro of ourselves and our blogging history for this introductory post, so without further ado, I present "A Brief History of an Orioles Blogger: James C. Baker."
I grew up in the wilds of Harford County, but never was the city far from my life. Both my parents were from the city...
The Orioles became the first team last night to score four earned runs off Indians starter Justin Masterson since June 3, and they did it over six innings.
The end result was another loss for the Orioles, their eighth in a row.
I preached all winter that they could finish .500 or slightly above if a lot of things fell into place. They would have to avoid injuries to key players, their young starters would have to take the next step and certain veterans would need bounce-back...
Orioles catcher Matt Wieters used words like "exciting" and "cool" to describe his first All-Star experience.
He got into the game as a reserve in the sixth inning and went 0-for-1 at bat and also was charged with a passed ball after not being charged with one all season to that point.
He later found out he was slated, as the third catcher on the American League squad, to possibly only play at all if the game went extra innings. Then New York catcher Russell Martin told AL manager Ron...
Dr. Michael Collins, the concussion specialist in Pittsburgh, reported today that second baseman Brian Roberts is improving and has been given the green light to increase his workload in Sarasota. He can amp up the baseball activities.
However, no timetable has been established for Roberts to go on a rehab assignment in the minors. Don't look for him in the lineup anytime soon.
The headaches and dizzy spells aren't as frequent, but they haven't completely subsided.
Meanwhile, Nick...
So much for a fresh start to the season.
Asdrubal Cabrera hit a solo home run with one out in the first inning, and Carlos Santana launched a two-run shot after Travis Hafner walked.
Eleven pitches, two home runs, and a 3-0 lead for the Indians.
Jeremy Guthrie threw 19 pitches in the inning, which included a diving stop along the line by first baseman Derrek Lee to rob Grady Sizemore of an extra-base hit.
Cabrera's 15th homer came on a 94 mph fastball that traveled an estimated 362 feet....
Orioles pitchers Kevin Gregg and Michael Gonzalez are appealing their suspensions handed down today by Major League Baseball for their actions in the Boston series.
Gregg was suspended for four games with the suspension scheduled to begin today. Gonzalez was suspended for three games, which was scheduled to begin on Monday, the day the O's begin a series with Boston.
Kevin Gregg and Mike Gonzalez talk about the suspensions they received from MLB
"They handed down the suspension today, I...
For the Orioles, the second half has started like the first half ended, with a starter having issues and the club falling behind early in a game. Some notes as they try to dig out of a 3-0 hole against Cleveland here tonight and snap a seven-game slide.
* The current Indians roster had a total of just one homer versus Jeremy Guthrie coming into this game, then Asdrubal Cabrera and Carlos Santana homered in a span of three batters in the opening inning as Cleveland took a 3-0 lead. Cabrera was...
It was determined by Major League Baseball that Red Sox manager Terry Francona will not be suspended or fined because Red Sox pitcher Kyle Weiland did not intentionally throw at Vladimir Guerrero during Sunday's game. Orioles manager Buck Showalter is serving his one-game suspension tonight.
Kevin Gregg was fined $2,500. Michael Gonzalez was fined $1,500, and Jim Johnson was fined $500.
Vladimir Guerrero isn't in the lineup because of the sore hand and wrist. Guerrero told Showalter this...
Major League Baseball has handed down suspensions and fines related to the ejection-filled series between the Orioles and Red Sox at Fenway Park.
Orioles reliever Kevin Gregg and Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz received four-game suspensions and undisclosed fines. Gregg's punishment was scheduled to begin tonight, but he will appeal the ban.
Gregg and Ortiz threw punches Friday night, and both dugouts and bullpens emptied, after Gregg pitched inside to Ortiz and then shouted to him as...
Manager Buck Showalter had a lot to talk about during his pregame session with the media.
On serving his suspension tonight:
"We've got a chance tonight."
"Managers don't really have any rights to appeal, even though we belong to the union. I think our right to appeal is talking to Joe (Torre), so I did that today."
On the players' punishments:
"I haven't really seen a lot. I've just been looking at what ours are. I think it's more take a look at the finished product when the...
The Orioles have promoted right-handed pitcher Oliver Drake from Single-A Frederick to Double-A Bowie and he will start for the Baysox tonight.
Drake, a 43rd-round draft pick in 2008, was 8-3 with a 2.14 ERA for Frederick with a WHIP of 0.99 and groundout-to-flyout ratio of 2.18.
This will be another crack at Double-A for the 24-year-old righty, who allowed 11 runs over four innings in two April starts for the Baysox.
Orioles minor league pitchers Matt Hobgood and Ryan Berry have now joined...
The Orioles have posted their lineup for Thursday's opener of a four-game series with the Cleveland Indians, and designated hitter Vladimir Guerrero isn't in it. Instead, Matt Wieters will serve as the DH with Craig Tatum catching.
Here's the Orioles lineup:
SS - Hardy
RF - Markakis
CF - Jones
DH - Wieters
1B - Lee
LF - Pie
3B - Reynolds
2B - Davis
C - Tatum
RHP - Guthrie
For the 25th consecutive year, the Orioles, along with Orioles Wives, Oriole Advocates, WJZ-TV, and the Maryland Food Bank, will hold their 25th annual Food Drive at Oriole Park at Camden Yards this weekend, July 15-17, during the Orioles' series with the Cleveland Indians. Members of these groups will collect non-perishable food items and monetary donations from fans at each entrance from the time gates open until the middle of the second inning.
During last year's Orioles Food Drive, more...
Too bad a baseball season is not like a Saturday round of golf with your friends. Maybe the Orioles could take a mulligan on their first half, when they went 36-52.
Over the last few weeks, each time I thought things could not get worse for the team, they did.
That said, I am almost afraid to say that, in losing 12 of 13 to end the first half, that the O's hit rock bottom.
It would be hard to imagine the starting pitching getting worse than it was in recent weeks. Here are some stats.
*...
My biggest fear today is I'll plop down on my couch, grab the remote, turn on MASN for the Orioles-Indians game and realize it's being played at Camden Yards. Or I'll order a dirty martini, ask the bartender to turn on the Orioles-Indians game and ... see above.
The Orioles haven't been home since June 30, and they turned their fans into road worriers with that 1-9 trip that dropped them 16 games below .500.
So why do we still care about the 2011 season?
Well, it doesn't end this...
Earlier today, I posted an entry about the Orioles' starting pitching struggles. They have been significant and probably the biggest reason for the club's 6-21 record over the past 27 games.
But the O's inconsistent offense has been just that recently as well.
During that 27-game stretch, the O's are batting just .195 (43-for-221) with runners in scoring position.
The Orioles have had just one game with 10 or more hits over the last seven contests and scored just 33 runs on the 10-game...
