I'm headed to the ESPN Zone in Baltimore's Inner Harbor before too long for the first Orioles Q&A of the summer. If you can't make it out to meet Garrett Atkins from noon to 1:00 p.m., check back here later today for a few highlights and photos. Atkins will be answering questions from an O's broadcaster, as well as from fans, so this afternoon will be a chance to get to know the new Oriole a little better (and win some prizes if you know your Orioles trivia!). Atkins will also stick around...

Some post-game notes and quotes after the Orioles beat the Yankees

Some post-game notes and quotes after the Orioles beat the Yankees
The Orioles started a six-game homestand with a stirring 5-4 win over the Yankees that featured Alfredo Simon's first Major League save, a Cesar Izturis 3-RBI night and a combined 0 for 10 evening from Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez. Back-to-back firsts: Sunday Cla Meredith got his first Major League save in his 271st big league appearance. Tonight, Simon got his first in his 7th career big league outing. They are the first O's pitchers to pick up their first saves in consecutive games...

O's take advantage of Yankee mistakes to win

O's take advantage of Yankee mistakes to win
Tonight, for a change, it was the other team that made mistakes with the O's taking advantage to get an important victory. The Orioles beat the Yankees 5-4 in the series opener at Camden Yards. It ended with Alfredo Simon on the mound, picking up his first save since he was in the minors in 2005. He hit 96 and 97 on the stadium gun and got A-Rod out with runners on first and third and two out in the 9th. Oh, yes there was drama at the end. The Orioles three-run 6th, which produced a 4-2...

Alfredo Simon talks about his first Major League save

Alfredo Simon talks about his first Major League save
Dave Trembley said he knew before the game that Alfredo Simon would be his closer tonight. What he didn't know was that Simon would need 29 pitches to get his first Major League save and that he would get key outs vs. Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez along the way. In the post-game interview Simon seemed as composed as he was on the mound, even after a Cesar Izturis two-out error gave the Yankees new life. "I just feel great. I'm glad they gave me the opportunity to close the game. I just...

MacPhail on Trembley, Wilfrido Perez and more (video added)
O's president Andy MacPhail was asked about his manager Dave Trembley just a few minutes ago near the Orioles dugout. His comments today reflected his recent public comments about his skipper. "Same thing I've told everybody. Our complete energy and focus is on doing the things we can to improve the situation on the field. Part of that is going to be getting more timely hitting and wrapping up the games at the end. That needs the most improvement at the present time. "We talk all the...

Millwood hangs tough (w-update)

Millwood hangs tough (w-update)
You have to give Kevin Millwood credit. He gets A-Rod and Cano out to get out of a bases loaded, one out jam in the top of the third. His own walk and a Miguel Tejada error prolonged the proceedings and Millwood threw a whopping 33 pitches in the inning and is at 67 for the game in three innings. Not only did he show poise getting out of that jam, but the Yankees top of the third followed the O's bottom of the second where Adam Jones hit into a double play with the sacks full and one out. ...

What Simon said

What Simon said
Last April, Alfredo Simon began the year in the O's starting rotation. Two starts later he was on the DL and headed for Tommy John surgery. Now, less than a year later he is back with the Orioles and will join the O's bullpen tonight. "I just feel happy because they gave me the chance again. I want to help this team and do the best I can," the 28-year-old Simon said. "My arm feels like new. That's the best thing and I was throwing all my pitches for strikes. I feel great. I threw...

Will O's play with passion and intensity vs. NY?

Will O's play with passion and intensity vs. NY?
It looks like the Orioles offense is rounding into shape in time for the club's six-game homestand versus Boston and New York. Even without Brian Roberts, the callup of Rhyne Hughes and return of Miguel Tejada has pumped some life into the bats and the lineup. Now let's see that impact the whole team. It's no secret the O's clubhouse is filled with some low-key guys. Nothing wrong with that, there are plenty of good guys and real pros on the roster. But for the next six days the O's...

Checking in on the Yankees

Checking in on the Yankees
Checking in with the team some around here know as the "Evil Empire" as the start of another O's-Yankees series is now a day away. The Yankees began the season with back-to-back series wins at Boston and Tampa. They are now 12-6 on the year. They own a 7-5 road record, including 3-3 on their current road trip. They won their first five series to tie a franchise record. But Sunday's loss to the Angels gave LA that series win, two games to one. Overall, New York has lost 3 of 4 since...

Xavier Avery is off to a great start at Frederick

Xavier Avery is off to a great start at Frederick
Of all the players off to good starts in the O's minors, perhaps the one creating the most buzz is Xavier Avery. Some in the organization feel he has a real chance to be a future Major League leadoff hitter and right now Avery is doing nothing to hurt that projection. He is one of the youngest players in the Carolina League, but the 20-year-old outfielder is batting .375-0-9 with a .898 OPS and his name peppers the list of league leaders. Avery hit .262 last season at Delmarva, his first...

Meredith and the O's hang on to win

Meredith and the O's hang on to win
The O's hung on for a 7-6 win Sunday at Boston. Cla Meredith got the final two outs to record the save after 271 career appearances without a save. Cla Meredith talks with Mark Viviano about his first career save I would use him in a save situation on Tuesday. Not kidding, he did the job for one day and with this bullpen right now that qualifies him to get a second day. On the upside, the O's offense has started to hit. The offense produced 13 runs on 31 hits the past two games. The...

Post-game notes: O's win Fenway finale

Post-game notes: O's win Fenway finale
Not made of clay: Cla Meredith picked up his first career save after 271 Major League appearances as the O's beat Boston 7-6 Sunday in ten innings. Meredith got the final two outs to strand runners at first and second. The O's trailed 4-1 after six but scored three in the 7th to tie it and three in the top of the tenth for the lead. The O's improve to 3-16 with the win and end the road trip at 2-8. They also snapped a ten-game losing streak with Boston posting their first win over the...

Arrieta: "I think I'm ready"

Arrieta: "I think I'm ready"
After a dominant outing for Triple-A Norfolk Saturday night vs. Charlotte, Jake Arrieta is certainly doing his part to prove he is ready for a shot at the Major Leagues. His 2-0, 0.36 start has sure created buzz around Birdland, where we'll take all the pitching help we can get. Saturday, Arrieta pitched seven scoreless innings with 11 strikeouts. He has now made 21 starts at Triple-A level counting last year and his time could be at hand. "The learning experience that he got last year...

Arrieta and Avery lead the way in the minors

Arrieta and Avery lead the way in the minors
Jake Arrieta and Xavier Avery continued their recent success in the O's minors on Saturday. Arrieta pitched seven shutout innings of two-hit ball as Norfolk topped Charlotte 4-2. The right-hander is now 2-0, 0.36 on the year. He has allowed just 1 ER in 25 innings this year to lead the International League in ERA. Last night, he walked one and fanned a career-high 11 batters. The Tides have won three of four games and are 7-10. Norfolk has hit eight homers over its last four games but...

Norfolk pitching coach talks about Chris Tillman

Norfolk pitching coach talks about Chris Tillman
Norfolk pitching coach Mike Griffin said he is not concerned about Tides pitcher Chris Tillman, who is 0-3, 8.38 on the year through three starts. The leading candidate to be the Orioles fifth starter in March, Tillman has allowed 17 hits in 9 2/3 on the year and got knocked out when he gave up four runs in the first inning of his last start on Sunday. "Right now he is working on some things from spring training. That is what we are concentrating on with his side days," Griffin said. ...

Players need to take stock

Players need to take stock
There isn't anyone who saw this coming. The Orioles' slow start is shocking and disappointing. The team that broke spring training was expected to be competitive - and still can be. But the players have to take stock and step it up in all phases of the game, especially with their approach. Physical mistakes are part of the game and happen to every team. But the Orioles have hurt themselves in this early part of the season with too many mental mistakes. It's time to refocus and increase...

Saturday night meltdown, pen gives it up again

Saturday night meltdown, pen gives it up again
Here are some postgame notes from the O's latest loss on Saturday. The raw numbers: The Orioles fall to 2-16 with Saturday's 7-6 loss to Boston. They are 1-8 on a road trip that now has one game remaining. The Orioles have lost ten in a row vs. Boston and are 2-21 vs. the Sox since 9-1-08. The Orioles have lost 15 of their last 16 games at Fenway Park. The Orioles fall to 1-6 in one-run games and are 1-9 on the year in games decided by two runs or less. He deserved much better: Brian...

My kingdom for a bullpen

My kingdom for a bullpen
As we watched the Orioles bullpen implode again tonight, wasting Brian Matusz's outstanding start at Fenway Park, the question now becomes what can be done to help this bullpen? Maybe the only current alternative is to switch around some roles among the pen pitchers. Dave Trembley has switched the lineup, maybe now he has to do it here. Maybe Alberto Castillo and Mark Hendrickson, maybe even Will Ohman, pitch in more late-inning roles. The fans want Jason Berken in some key spots late. ...
