Cowser and Kemp crack Orioles lineup

Colton Cowser gets his first start tonight if the weather allows the Orioles to continue their series against the Royals at Camden Yards following last night’s walk-off homer from Jordan Westburg.

Cowser is playing left field. Austin Hays goes to the bench.

Westburg stays in the lineup, starting at third base. Tony Kemp gets his first start at second.

Jorge Mateo and Ramón Urías are on the bench with Hays.

Nice depth around here.

Anthony Santander is the designated hitter and Ryan O’Hearn is in right field. Cedric Mullins moves up to sixth in the order.

Cole Irvin broke camp as the No. 5 starter and he’s on the mound tonight. He allowed 12 runs and 19 hits with 13 walks and nine strikeouts in 17 1/3 exhibition innings.

Irvin has made five career starts against the Royals and posted a 2.10 ERA and 1.067 WHIP in 30 innings. He held them to one run n 5 1/3 innings on June 10 at Camden Yards for his first victory with the Orioles.

Salvador Pérez is 3-for-9 with a home run against Irvin.

Last night’s win assured the Orioles of going 93 consecutive regular season series without being swept.

Kansas City right-hander Alec Marsh, a second-round pick in 2019 out of Arizona State University, made 17 appearances (eight starts) as a rookie last season and registered a 5.69 ERA and 1.561 WHIP over 74 1/3 innings. He averaged 10.3 strikeouts per nine innings.

Left-handers batted .280/.407/.561 against Marsh and right-handers batted .253/.333/.494. He hasn’t faced the Orioles.

Former Orioles executive Larry Lucchino passed away today at age 78.

Lucchino served as the team’s president from 1988-93.

Commissioner Rob Manfred issued the following statement:

“Larry Lucchino was one of the most accomplished executives that our industry has ever had.  He was deeply driven, he understood baseball’s place in our communities, and he had a keen eye for executive talent.  Larry’s vision for Camden Yards played a vital role in advancing fan-friendly ballparks across the game.  He followed up by overseeing the construction of Petco Park, which remains a jewel of the San Diego community.  Then Larry teamed with John Henry and Tom Werner to produce the most successful era in Red Sox history, which included historic World Series Championships on the field and a renewed commitment to Fenway Park.

“On behalf of Major League Baseball, I send my condolences to Larry’s family, his Red Sox colleagues and his many friends throughout our National Pastime.”

The Orioles also posted a statement on the former Twitter.

“We are heartbroken over the news of the passing of former Orioles President and CEO Larry Lucchino. A pioneer in the sport, we will forever be grateful for his impact on our organization, highlighted by the construction of Oriole Park at Camden Yards, the Ballpark That Forever Changed Baseball.

“We join our entire baseball family in mourning this loss and extend our thoughts and prayers to his loved ones and many friends throughout the game.”
