O's game blog: The Orioles have scored 34 runs on this road trip

To say the least, the Orioles offense is humming along pretty well through 10 games. Last night, the Orioles scored nine or more runs for the third time in the last five games.

In the five games of the road trip, they have scored 34 runs and that includes two games where they scored five total. They have hit 12 homers in that span.

With an American League-leading 20 homers through 10 games, it is easy to do the math and project 324 homers over a full season. The major league record for a season is 264 by the 1997 Seattle Mariners.

Right now, the Orioles lead the AL in batting average (.294), on-base percentage (.357), slugging percentage (.540) and OPS (.897). They lead the league with 56 runs scored, an average of 5.6 per game, and with 99 hits.

They have fared pretty well so far in both strikeouts and walks. Their walk total of 33 is tied for fifth most in the league and their strikeout total of 80 is only eighth most for a team expected to put up big strikeouts numbers.

Gallardo-Throws-Gray-Sidebar.jpgWe'll see if more offense is coming tonight when the Orioles play the third game of a four-game series at Texas. Yovani Gallardo (1-0, 5.40 ERA) faces right-hander Colby Lewis (1-0, 3.00 ERA).

Gallardo gave up one run in five innings in his first start against Minnesota and then allowed five in five innings Monday at Boston. The O's rotation ERA is 7.26 over the past six games and now ranks 13th for the season at 5.04. The O's bullpen has not allowed a run in 8 2/3 innings the last three games. The 'pen ERA of 1.42 for the year ranks second in the AL.

Gallardo is facing his former team tonight. He pitched one season for Texas and in 2015 went 13-11 with a 3.42 ERA over 33 starts. In 16 starts at Globe Life Park, he went 8-6 with a 3.52 ERA for the Rangers.

Some fans are expressing more concerns over Gallardo's velocity, which has been around 88 mph on average his first two starts. He has pitched in cold weather, but this FanGraphs.com chart shows the velocity for each of his starts since 2014.

Lewis has faced Seattle twice so far, allowing three runs over six innings the first time and one run over six in his second start. Three of the four runs he gave up in those starts came in the first inning.

Lewis went 17-9 with an ERA of 4.66 in 33 starts last year. In nine career games and seven starts versus the Orioles over his career, he is 2-4 with a 6.11 ERA. Lewis has allowed a high total of 14 homers in 45 2/3 innings in those games.

The Orioles are 3-2 on this road trip, which ends Sunday at Texas. They ended a five-game losing streak to the Rangers with last night's nine-run seventh inning leading to the 11-5 win.
