Orioles and Athletics lineups in Oakland

OAKLAND – Aaron Hicks remains out of the Orioles lineup as they resume their West Coast trip with three games against the Athletics.

Jordan Westburg is batting ninth and playing third base. Adam Frazier is the second baseman.

Adley Rutschman stays in the leadoff spot, followed by shortstop Gunnar Henderson.

Ryan Mountcastle is the designated hitter and attempting to extend his on-base streak to 24 games. Cedric Mullins is batting sixth, followed by Austin Hays.

In Kyle Gibson’s last start in Seattle, he allowed a career-high nine runs and tied his career high with 12 hits. He faced the Athletics on April 10 and held them to one run in 6 1/3 innings.

Gibson is 6-3 with a 3.80 ERA in 11 career starts against the Athletics. He’s posted a 4.07 ERA and 1.438 WHIP in four starts in Oakland over 24 1/3 innings.

Gibson is 3-0 with a 1.45 ERA in three starts against the Athletics since 2021.

The Orioles are trying to avoid their first three-game losing streak since dropping four in a row June 27-July 1.

The Orioles won three of four games against the Athletics in April, giving them consecutive series victories over the A’s for the first time since taking three straight from 2015-16.

Today began with the Orioles holding a two-game lead over second-place Tampa Bay, which is playing in Anaheim tonight. Oakland has the worst record in baseball at 34-87 and the worst run differential at minus-282.

The Orioles have held the outright best record in the American League for 30 days this year, the second time that’s happened in the last 40 seasons, according to STATS. They led the league for 177 days in 1997.

Tonight marks the fifth time in Orioles history that they’re 20 or more games above .500 and playing a team that’s at least 50 games below, per STATS. It happened four times in 1979 versus the Blue Jays.

Mountcastle totaled four home runs and 12 RBIs in the April series against the Athletics, the first Oriole in club history to record those figures in a single series, per STATS. He was the first player to do it against the A’s since Alex Rodriguez in 2001.

Mountcastle homered twice, including a grand slam, and had nine RBIs in a 12-8 win on April 11.

The Athletics won three of four games against the Orioles in April 2022 in Oakland. They’ve gone 15-6 when hosting the Orioles since 2016, with a 4-1-1 series record.

The A’s have lost 29 series this year.

Left-hander Francisco Pérez is the opener tonight for the A’s. He’s made two relief appearances and allowed one run and three hits in two innings.

All 16 of his appearances over parts of three seasons have been in relief, including 10 last summer with the Nationals. He’s never faced the Orioles.

The A's are starting two more left-handers in the series – Ken Waldichuk and JP Sears.
