Orioles lineup vs. Yankees in Bronx

NEW YORK – Joey Ortiz gets the start at third base tonight as the Orioles try to even their series with the Yankees.

Cedric Mullins is leading off against a left-hander, former Orioles Rule 5 pick Nestor Cortes. Six of Mullins’ last nine hits are for extra bases. He has a six-game hitting streak, going 10-for-23 (.435) with four doubles, two home runs, six RBIs and three walks.

James McCann is catching and Adley Rutschman stays in the lineup as the designated hitter.

Adam Frazier, who starts at second base, has a 16-game on-base streak, batting .281/.349/.474 with three doubles, a triple, two home runs, 10 RBIs and five walks. His longest career streak is 17 games in 2019.

Tyler Wells has registered a 2.94 ERA and 0.788 WHIP, lowest in the majors, in nine games this season. He faced the Yankees on April 9 and allowed four runs in six innings. Aaron Judge and Franchy Cordero hit home runs.

The Orioles have scored at least five runs in their last five games and seven of eight. They’re 1-3 against the Yankees this season and 8-15 since the beginning of 2022.

The three extra-inning games in a row ties the club record, most recently June 23-25, 1991, according to STATS.

Cortes has a 5.21 ERA and 1.283 WHIP in nine outings. The left-hander is coming off a quality start against the Blue Jays with two runs allowed in six innings.

Cortes allowed two runs in 5 1/3 innings on April 9 at Camden Yards. He’s 4-0 with a 1.37 ERA and 0.890 WHIP in eight career games (six starts) against the Orioles, with 56 strikeouts in 39 1/3 innings.

Austin Hays is 3-for-15 with a home run against Cortes. Jorge Mateo is 3-for-7.

Mullins and Ryan Mountcastle are both 1-for-12. Mountcastle has struck out seven times.

The Yankees are hot, having won a season-high five games in a row, seven of their last eight, nine of 11 and 12 of 15. Their 15-5 record since May 2 is the best in baseball.

They have four walk-off wins this season.
