Orioles will not sign their fourth-round draft pick

Today is the final day to sign selections from the 2017 First-Year Player Draft. The deadline is 5 p.m. Eastern time. But the Orioles are not going to sign their lone remaining unsigned top 10 pick, right-hander Jack Conlon from Clements (Texas) High School in Sugarland, Texas. He was taken in the fourth round with the 128th overall selection.

Had the Orioles signed Conlon, they would have reached agreements with their all of their first 16 selections over the first 15 rounds. So far, they have signed 31 of 41 draft picks.

The slot amount for Conlon was $409,000. With an unsigned pick in the top 10 rounds, that money just goes away and a team cannot use the savings. But the Orioles still are $513,400 under their pool amount and could spend as much as $638,000 without incurring any penalties for 2017 draft spending.

The Orioles will now try to add a player or players taken down in the draft. A pick taken in rounds 11-40 can sign for as much as $125,000. Any amount beyond that would come from the pool overage and the $638,000 the club still has available.

One player the team may still take a run at is left-hander Cameron Bishop, taken in round 26 out of Cal-Irvine. He missed his entire junior season with a strained oblique. But he throws a 95 mph fastball and went 5-5 with a 4.61 ERA as a sophomore with 79 strikeouts over 70 innings. He was drafted in round 32 out of an Arizona high school.

Two picks that remain very unlikely to sign are high school pitcher Logan Allen taken in round 16 and high school infielder Greg Jones taken in round 17.

MLBPipeline.com was first to report that Conlon would not sign with the Orioles.
