Rutschman participating in Home Run Derby

NEW YORK – Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman has more to do at the All-Star Game than represent the American League.

He’s also trying to win the Home Run Derby.

Rutschman is participating in next Monday’s event at T-Mobile Park in Seattle, joining the Mets’ Pete Alonso, the Rays’ Randy Arozarena, the Dodgers’ Mookie Betts, the Blue Jays’ Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and the Mariners’ Julio Rodríguez.

Two more hitters are needed to complete the field.

Trey Mancini is the last Orioles player to participate in the Derby, finishing as runner-up to Alonso in 2021.

Two Orioles have won the event: Miguel Tejada in 2004 and Cal Ripken Jr. in 1991.

Rutschman has hit 11 homers this season to tie for second on the club behind Anthony Santander (14). The Oregon native will have lots of family and friends supporting him.

The Home Run Derby airs at 8 p.m. on ESPN. No catcher has won it.

The Orioles begin a four-game series against the Yankees tonight. They’re 5 ½ games behind the first-place Rays and four ahead of New York.

Tyler Wells has made 15 starts and 16 appearances overall and posted a 3.21 ERA and 0.885 WHIP that’s the lowest in the majors. He allowed two earned runs in each of his five June starts.

Wells has faced the Yankees twice this season and allowed nine runs in 11 innings. He struck out eight batters in five innings on May 24 in the Bronx, but he surrendered five runs. Gleyber Torres homered twice that night and Isiah Kiner-Falefa also took him deep.

The Orioles went 1-2 against the Yankees in April at Camden Yards, and 2-1 in May at Yankee Stadium.

The Yankees are starting Domingo Germán, who threw a perfect game in Oakland on Wednesday. He had allowed a combined 15 earned runs and 17 total in his two previous starts over 5 1/3 innings.

Germán is 6-1 with a 2.40 ERA and 0.945 WHIP in nine career games (seven starts) against the Orioles.

Ryan O’Hearn is 2-for-6 with two home runs against Germán, and Santander is 2-for-7 with two homers.
