Zach Wilt: A few thoughts on Trey Mancini's improved eye at the plate

Zach Wilt: A few thoughts on Trey Mancini's improved eye at the plate
A look through the Orioles stats is a pretty fun trip these days. You get to see Manny Machado's name quite a bit. He's the team's leader in batting average, home runs, RBIs, on-base percentage, hits, slugging percentage, WAR and I'm sure a bunch of other categories. It's no surprise, given the success the Orioles shortstop has had at the plate this season. He continues to amaze each and every night and sometimes it's hard to look past Machado to see what the rest of the O's offense is...

Liz Barr: Rendon's return has sparked Nationals

Liz Barr: Rendon's return has sparked Nationals
He's our favorite player, he's Trea Turner's favorite player: it's Tony Two Bags himself, Anthony Rendon. We all missed him when he was out unexpectedly long after fouling a ball off his foot, and the offense suffered in his absence. But now that he's back, he's thriving, the team is thriving, we're all thriving. Since Rendon's return on May 5, the Nationals have gone 7-2, and they've scored 32 runs through those nine games, which averages to about 3.5 per game. But with the way the...

Josh Michael: Shorebirds have gotten dominant work from Michael Baumann

Josh Michael: Shorebirds have gotten dominant work from Michael Baumann
Most Orioles fans are now well aware that the low Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds are off to a phenomenal start to the 2018 season. One of the big reasons why has been their starting pitching and right-hander Michael Baumann has led their stout rotation. Baumann, 22, was selected by the Orioles last June in the third round of the First-Year Player Draft out of Jacksonville University. It marked the second straight year the O's used their third-round pick on a Jacksonville player after selecting...

Marty Niland: Adams' homer tear conjures up memories of Howard's historic 1968 streak

Marty Niland: Adams' homer tear conjures up memories of Howard's historic 1968 streak
Nationals fans are hopeful again, with the club coming off 6-1 road trip and threatening to return to the top of the National League East standings. One key has been the powerful bat of Matt Adams, who homered seven times in five games from May 1 through the May 7 win over San Diego. A weekly slash line of .400/.516/1.240 is impressive for the 6-foot-3, 245-pounder known as "Big City," but it brings to mind an even bigger streak by an even bigger man. Frank Howard, the 6-foot-7, 280-lb....

Andrew Stetka: Machado's MVP case could be unique
We may not be to Memorial Day yet, but it's not too early to start examining candidates for Most Valuable Player. The Orioles have their own this year, and it's a familiar face. Manny Machado is going to be in the conversation all season long, no matter what team he is playing for by the end of it. The 25-year-old has already twice finished in the top five in MVP voting in his career, placing fourth in 2015 before coming in fifth two seasons ago. Only five other players have sniffed the top...

Ryan Sullivan: The trickle-down effect of Eaton's latest setback

Ryan Sullivan: The trickle-down effect of Eaton's latest setback
On Thursday evening, news unfortunately broke that Nationals outfielder Adam Eaton underwent surgery on his ankle and will miss much of the rest of the season. Eaton injured himself in the Nationals' home opener on a slide into home, and regrettably it took doctors over a month to properly diagnose the ailment. Now, for the second consecutive year, he will spend the majority of the season on the disabled list. Speaking for all Nationals fans, we wish him a speedy recovery. Eaton's lengthy...

Hitting the Books with Gary Thorne: "Eternity Street"

Hitting the Books with Gary Thorne: "Eternity Street"
John Faragher is a noted historian, particularly regarding the American west. His biography of Daniel Boone is considered a seminal work. "Eternity Street: Violence and Justice in Frontier Los Angeles" may gain the same reputation. This is the story of the wild west, in all its horror, set in L.A., well before the Dodge City stories came to be. California became a territory in 1848 because of U.S. military force against Mexico. It became a state two years later. While Faragher takes us from...

Josh Michael: Rifaela, McKenna making strong early impressions
The Orioles may not be playing as well as all fans had hoped, but there is some good baseball being played down on the farm. Two of the lesser-known outfield prospects in the organization, Ademar Rifaela and Ryan McKenna, are off to fantastic starts. Rifaela, 23, has been in the organization since 2013, when he played for the Rookie-level Dominican Summer League Orioles as an 18-year old after being signed by the O's as an international free agent out of Curacao. As his body matured, so too...

Liz Barr: Comparing Matt Adams to Adam Lind

Liz Barr: Comparing Matt Adams to Adam Lind
When the Nationals didn't re-sign Adam Lind over the offseason, Nats faithful were heartbroken. Lind had become a fan favorite, and the left-handed slugger was incredibly important to the club all last season, providing a huge lift off the bench and filling in in the starting lineup when the Nats needed him most. But when they let him go, the question remained: Who was going to fill that giant hole left by Lind's absence? Enter Matt Adams. Adams and Lind essentially have the same role:...

Marty Niland: Hall of Stars induction finally shines spotlight on Buddy Myer
Sunday was a great day for Washington sports. Before celebrating the Nationals' first walk-off victory of 2018, fans at Nationals Park got to see another set of local heroes inducted to the Washington Hall of Stars. In addition to fairly recent greats, like basketball stars Len Bias, Grant Hill and Walt Williams, came Buddy Myer, a baseball star from the distant past. His induction to the local hall was a step toward righting what his fans feel is the injustice of Myer's exclusion from the...
