NEW YORK - The Orioles ran out of time to let Edwin Jackson work through his issues.
They needed two fresh arms today and Jackson and Stefan Crichton had worked on back-to-back nights. They didn't get results or another chance.
Jackson was designated for assignment today after allowing seven runs (four earned) and 11 hits in five innings since the Orioles purchased his contract. Crichton was optioned after allowing five runs in 3 1/3 innings this weekend.
"It's tough," said manager Buck...
NEW YORK - The Orioles designated Edwin Jackson for assignment today and optioned Stefan Crichton to Triple-A Norfolk as part of their latest bullpen maneuvering.
Logan Verrett was recalled from Norfolk and the Orioles selected Jimmy Yacabonis' contract. Yacabonis is wearing No. 54 in his first trip to the majors.
Jackson said he's going to stay in Baltimore for a few days and see what happens. He isn't sure whether he'll accept an outright assignment if he clears waivers.

NEW YORK - Does a day game provide ample opportunity for the Orioles to rework their bullpen?
It's a short turnaround, but the starts haven't been much longer.
Stefan Crichton has appeared on back-to-back nights and allowed five runs in 3 1/3 innings. Edwin Jackson also had pitched on consecutive nights, but he's out of minor league options.
Jackson has allowed seven runs (four earned) and 11 hits in five innings in his three appearances since the Orioles purchased his contract.

NEW YORK - The first inning doesn't just bite Orioles starter Chris Tillman, it tears at his flesh like a shark and circles back for more.
The Yankees smelled blood tonight and they were relentless. Ten batters came to the plate in the first. Two of them hit home runs. Only 28 pitches were thrown because the hosts were in full-blown attack mode.
It brought no comfort to Tillman that they didn't let up in the second.
Tillman retired only four batters and surrendered a career-high nine runs,...
NEW YORK - It took only one game in Trenton last night for Orioles catcher Welington Castillo to decide that he was ready to come off the disabled list.
He also earns points for his preparation when the media's questions venture into a delicate area.
Castillo is able to laugh at the phrasing and the awkwardness. He tries to ease the discomfort. A high pain threshold comes with the job.
The Orioles activated Castillo from the disabled list 11 days after he sustained a testicular injury on a...
NEW YORK - Orioles manager Buck Showalter thinks that third baseman Manny Machado may be able to remain on the active roster. The outlook took a dramatic shift upward today.
Machado is out of the lineup for the third consecutive night, but his left wrist and hand apparently are feeling much better.
"Manny's good. He improved again," Showalter said this afternoon while talking to the media in the visiting dugout at Yankee Stadium.
"It looks like he's got a chance to miss the DL. It's just...
NEW YORK - Reliever Brad Brach has dealt with the situation before, has taken the exact same questions about the other members of the bullpen stepping up while a key figure is on the disabled list.
It happened twice last year with Darren O'Day and twice this year with closer Zach Britton. But never before has he been asked about the bullpen missing Britton and O'Day at the same time.
O'Day went on the DL yesterday with a strained right shoulder. Meanwhile, Britton threw again today off a...
NEW YORK - The Orioles activated catcher Welington Castillo from the 10-day disabled list this afternoon and again designated catcher Francisco Peña for assignment.
Castillo caught seven innings last night at Double-A Trenton and went hitless in three at-bats in his brief injury rehab assignment with the Bowie Baysox.
Castillo sustained a testicular injury on May 30 against the Yankees.
Peña also was designated for assignment on May 17, but he cleared waivers and accepted an outright...
NEW YORK - If Manny Machado lands on the disabled list with a strained left wrist, and a decision is pending, the Orioles could give Rubén Tejada most of the starts and maybe select Paul Janish's contract again from Triple-A Norfolk after outrighting him earlier this week. Janish wouldn't have to stay down for the required 10 days because he'd be replacing an injured player.
Manager Buck Showalter needs a utility infielder on the active roster who isn't forced into a starting role....
NEW YORK - Dylan Bundy turned in another quality start for the Orioles tonight, a sweet achievement after the rotation totaled 6 2/3 innings in the last two games. He provided length, but the Orioles couldn't provide another lead.
The Yankees tied the game in the bottom of the second, moved ahead in the sixth and pulled away against relievers Edwin Jackson and Stefan Crichton for an 8-2 victory over the Orioles before an announced sellout crowd of 46,031.
The Orioles (31-28) have lost four of...
NEW YORK - The Orioles are terming reliever Darren O'Day's injury as a right shoulder strain, putting him on the disabled list retroactive to Wednesday.
"That's the kind of thing I alluded to a little bit lightly the last couple days about availability," said manager Buck Showalter. "It's something that's been bothering him a little bit the last couple days. He had good outings, he's been pitching well. It's unfortunate."
O'Day has allowed two runs in his last nine appearances, and...
NEW YORK - The Orioles are placing reliever Darren O'Day on the 10-day disabled list with soreness in his right shoulder. Reliever Stefan Crichton has been recalled and he's headed to the Bronx for tonight's game.
O'Day also was bothered with a sore shoulder last month and didn't pitch for seven days. He's allowed only two runs in his last nine appearances, but the shoulder flared up again after Tuesday night's game against the Pirates.
O"Day tried to throw on the field this afternoon...
NEW YORK - Adam Jones has returned to the Orioles' lineup tonight, but Manny Machado remains a no-show due to a strained left wrist.
Rubén Tejada is playing third base and batting ninth.
Trey Mancini is serving as the designated hitter, and he's moved up to second in the order.
The Orioles are tied for the most home runs in June with 14. Last season, they set the record in June with 56.

Can the Orioles go a second day without making a move to freshen up their bullpen?
They stood pat yesterday despite playing 11 innings the previous night and using Mike Wright for 3 1/3 innings. They considered sending down Wright, the latest "reward" for a good relief outing, but decided to hold onto him.
Wright doesn't figure to be available tonight for the series opener against the Yankees and Ubaldo Jiménez threw 43 pitches in three innings last night after relieving Alec Asher.
The...
WASHINGTON - Signs that your starter is struggling in the first inning include a pitch count that reaches 41 and a phone call to the bullpen that causes Ubaldo Jiménez to remove his jacket and grab his glove.
It happened tonight at Nationals Park, where the Orioles' collective mood matched a blue sky earlier in the day that kept the tarp off the field and lessened the chances of another random postponement.
The Orioles really could have used the break. Their third baseman was nursing a sore...
WASHINGTON - Orioles center fielder Adam Jones is available tonight if manager Buck Showalter wants to bring him off the bench. However, Showalter is keeping Jones out of the lineup after back-to-back long nights against the Pirates.
"You know, he played two extra-inning games," Showalter said. "We had two challenging games, pretty sore. I talked with him. I decided that he needs to get a day off his legs.
"(Twenty-one) innings running around center field. So hopefully he'll be available...
WASHINGTON - The Orioles lineup for tonight's makeup game in D.C. is missing third baseman Manny Machado and center fielder Adam Jones.
Machado arrived at the ballpark wearing a soft brace on his left wrist. He met with manager Buck Showalter.
Chris Davis is playing third base for the first time since Sept. 10, 2014. Mark Trumbo is at first base.
Davis also met with Showalter before the lineup was posted.
Joey Rickard is in center field and batting sixth. Jonathan Schoop is hitting second....
WASHINGTON - Manny Machado's MRI today didn't reveal any damage to his left hand beyond the punctures and bruise. I'm told that the third baseman has a strained wrist and is day-to-day.
The Orioles haven't posted their lineup for tonight's makeup game against the Nationals in D.C.
Machado sustained the injury last night in the top of the second inning when the Pirates' Andrew McCutchen spiked his wrist on the front end of a double steal. Machado took the field again in the third, but...
After the media scrum broke up yesterday at Edwin Jackson's locker and he could breathe again, and also change into his Orioles batting practice attire, I introduced myself and asked whether he knew anyone in the clubhouse.
The guy was joining his 12th team. I felt like the odds were pretty good.
Jackson made sure to repeat my first name, never an easy task for the newbies, and said that he couldn't think of anyone off the top of his head. His world was still spinning. Less than 24 hours...
Trey Mancini carried the Orioles back into their comfort zone tonight, his two-out, two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning moving them past regulation. Moving them to where they had won eight of nine games.
Mancini felt right at home in the 11th, his three-run shot off Pirates left-hander Wade LeBlanc with two outs giving the Orioles a 9-6 win before what remained of an announced crowd of 19,957 at Camden Yards.
Caleb Joseph worked a two-out walk to move Joey Rickard to second base...
