ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Orioles first baseman Chris Davis is out of tonight's lineup due to an illness.
One of the Rays physicians is examining Davis, who could be available later tonight.
Left-hander Blake Snell's splits apparently don't factor into the decision to sit Davis, who was held out of batting practice today.
"Obviously, he's under the weather," said manager Buck Showalter. "Hopefully, he'll be OK by gametime."
Asked whether the illness is stomach-related, Showalter said,...
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Orioles return to Tropicana Field tonight only 3 1/2 games out of the second wild card spot.
They're starting both of their catchers against Rays left-hander Blake Snell, with Welington Castillo serving as designated hitter. Mark Trumbo is playing first base and Chris Davis is on the bench.
Snell is 0-5 with a 4.98 ERA and 1.625 WHIP in 11 starts over 56 innings. He's averaging 5.9 walks per nine innings.
Left-handers are batting .212 against Snell and right-handers...
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The hot bat of second baseman Jonathan Schoop earned him recognition beyond the Orioles.
Schoop has been named the American League's Player of the Week after batting .433 in seven games.
Schoop went 13-for-30 with two doubles, three home runs, 16 RBIs and eight runs scored, as the Orioles try to at least stay in the wild card hunt.
This is the first Player of the Week honor for Schoop, who currently leads the Orioles with a .307 average, .353 on-base percentage, .552...
Caleb Joseph has a tendency to choke up at the plate and he doesn't care who notices. He's secure in his masculinity.
There are no tears from the Orioles catcher, though his injury last summer would make anyone's eyes water.
Joseph suffered through a miserable 2016 season, and not just the foul ball that put him on the disabled list for a month. He crafted a .174/.216/.197 slash line and didn't drive in a run in 49 games. He lost an arbitration hearing that chafed a few members of the...
Hyun Soo Kim gets a rare start today, serving as the designated hitter as the Orioles try to avoid being swept by the Astros.
Mark Trumbo is in right field and Caleb Joseph is catching.
Adam Jones is 9-for-23 with two doubles, three home runs, nine RBIs and nine runs scored in his last five games.
The Astros placed rookie Colin Moran on the 10-day disabled list with a facial fracture sustained last night on a foul ball. They recalled infielder Tyler White.

Orioles manager Buck Showalter wrote Caleb Joseph's name into Wednesday night's lineup against the Rangers, then switched to Welington Castillo on Thursday. He went back to Joseph Friday night in the series opener against the Astros and selected Castillo last night.
An early afternoon game today most likely will put Joseph behind the plate. No quick turnaround for Castillo.
For Showalter, it's nice to have catching choices.
Castillo began last night with eight hits in his last 18 at-bats,...
On the same night that executive vice president Dan Duquette told season-ticket holders at Camden Yards that the Orioles still could make a run at a playoff berth, two home runs by the Astros in the sixth inning delivered the loudest message.
Marwin Gonzalez's pinch-hit three-run shot off Darren O'Day completed a bizarre series of events in the inning and pointed the Astros toward an 8-4 victory over the Orioles before an announced crowd of 32,524 at Camden Yards.
The Orioles have lost two...
The tarp remains on the field today at Camden Yards as a light rains falls, the kind that sent fans scurrying and cut short the annual "State of the Orioles" event for season-ticket holders. No word on whether the game will be delayed at the start.
Update: It's delayed at the start.
The Orioles already have endured 12 games delayed by inclement weather or the threat of it. I'm not certain how to categorize the one in D.C.
Now that Mike Wright is back at Triple-A Norfolk, the Orioles must...
Orioles executive vice president Dan Duquette painted the Orioles today during at Q&A session with season ticket holders as a team that's trying to improve its starting pitching and make a playoff run in 2017.
Duquette, sitting on top of the visiting dugout with manager Buck Showalter during the annual "State of the Orioles," seemed to challenge reports that the Orioles are in sell mode. He wasn't going to make a concession speech this afternoon.
It felt more like a rally.
"I still...
Rubén Tejada continues to play shortstop for the Orioles and he continues to rake.
Tejada, in tonight's lineup again, has 12 hits in his last 28 at-bats for a .429 average.
Welington Castillo is catching. Seth Smith is in right field.
Chris Davis is 4-for-30 with a double, three home runs, eight RBIs and 13 strikeouts since coming off the disabled list.
Manny Machado is batting .333 (23-for-69) in 17 games this month.
For the Orioles Adam Jones CF Manny Machado 3B Jonathan Schoop 2B Chris...
The Orioles have lost four games since the All-Star break and they've fallen behind 8-0, 7-0, 6-0 and 5-0. My advice is to stop doing it. The plan clearly isn't working.
Putting Ubaldo Jiménez back in the bullpen isn't really a solution for the reasons previously stated. He needs extra time to get loose, he tends to struggle in his first inning and he requires extended rest between outings. And there isn't a spot for him with Miguel Castro earning an extended stay.
Jayson Aquino would be...
The Astros hit for the cycle nine batters into tonight's game and led by five runs after the second inning. A season didn't die, but the buzz from a four-game sweep was killed.
Ubaldo Jiménez turned in another unsatisfactory performance, raising questions about his status in the rotation and the organization for the umpteenth time, and the Orioles opened their weekend series with an 8-7 loss before an announced crowd of 25,784 at Camden Yards.
The Orioles are 46-50 overall and 0-4 against...
Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy will accompany the team to Tampa and Arlington during the upcoming road trip. He'll be reexamined by a hand specialist upon the club's return home and most likely cleared for strengthening exercises.
Infielder Ryan Flaherty and Rule 5 outfielder Anthony Santander remain scheduled to start their injury rehab assignments in six days.
Seth Smith is 9-for-20 with three home runs in his last five games, but he's out of the lineup again tonight.
Smith sat the two...
Joey Rickard gets the start in right field tonight as the Orioles begin a three-game series against the Astros at Camden Yards.
Caleb Joseph is behind the plate.
The Orioles have hit at least four home runs in 10 games this season, which is tops in the majors. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the Orioles have three other seasons with four home runs or more in 10 games - 1995 (10), 1996 (14) and 2016 (16).
The 2016 Orioles also had exactly 10 four-homer games through July 20.
For the...
The question came across as innocent, though it's not always clear when delivered by Orioles manager Buck Showalter.
Showalter usually knows the answer and seems to be testing his audience. Maybe that was the intent yesterday afternoon during his pregame media session.
We took the bait.
Before delving into the latest dissection of Trey Mancini's season, Showalter asked, "Who's the Rookie of the Year frontrunner?"
"Aaron Judge" came the response from pretty much everyone in the room, the...
The Orioles' streak of quality starts ended tonight in the top of the fifth inning. They settled for tacking on another win.
Seemed like a better plan.
Down by four runs in the middle innings, the Orioles again rode their rejuvenated offense to a 9-7 victory over the Rangers before an announced crowd of 14,691 at Camden Yards that completed a four-game sweep.
Jonathan Schoop, Adam Jones, Mark Trumbo and Chris Davis homered for the Orioles, who ran the table on the Rangers in a four-game series...
With the Red Sox losing this afternoon, the Orioles already gained a half-game in the division race to leave them 7 1/2 back as they get ready to finish their series against the Rangers. They're also 3 1/2 behind in the wild card chase, but manager Buck Showalter isn't interested.
Showalter makes it appear that he's not even a casual observer.
"I haven't (looked) in about three or four weeks," he said.
Told that his club was four games below .500, Showalter replied, "I didn't know that,...
The Orioles are skipping batting practice today due to the heat index. They're taking their hitting act indoors.
"It didn't make a whole lot of sense," said manager Buck Showalter. "Hoping it clears."
The offense already is hot with 25 runs scored in the first three games of the series.
The Orioles hit 2,490 home runs at Memorial Stadium from 1954-1991. They've hit 2,490 at Camden Yards since it opened in 1992.
Rule 5 pick Anthony Santander, who's been rehabbing his right forearm down...
Welington Castillo is behind the plate tonight and Joey Rickard remains in right field, as the Orioles attempt to complete a four-games sweep of the Rangers.
Adam Jones' 15 home runs against the Rangers are his highest total against a team outside the American League East.
Jonathan Schoop's next double will be the 100th of his career.
Caleb Joseph is batting .307 (23-for-75) in 28 home games.
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the Orioles were batting .203 with the bases loaded before last...
The Orioles are doing a lousy impression of a team that's focused on the future.
Players hear and read the rumors. They're aware of the vulnerability of their top relievers. They, too, wonder how they can remain competitive if the bullpen, the team's undisputed strength, is torn down at the back end.
One player told me yesterday that he'd be surprised if Zach Britton or Brad Brach isn't traded. Not necessarily both, but one of them.
Britton and Brach sat next to each other yesterday before...
