Post-game notes and quotes: Yankees top O's

Post-game notes and quotes: Yankees top O's
Winning pitcher Andy Pettitte improved to 12-6, 4.03. He is 2-0, 1.17 in two starts this year vs. the Orioles and improved his career numbers vs. Baltimore to 26-6, 3.56 in 39 career games, 37 starts. The win was his 190th all-time, moving him into third on the all-time Yankee wins list. He pitched a season-high eight innings tonight. Pettitte is tied with Catfish Hunter for second most wins all-time vs. the Orioles with 26, trailing leader Whitey Ford, who had 30. Not tonight - The O's...

Tillman feeling strong as season winds down

Tillman feeling strong as season winds down
The Orioles have discussed possibly limiting the innings of their rookie pitchers in September or maybe even shutting them down at some point during the month. O's 21-year-old right hander Chris Tillman could understand if that happens, but he says right now, it's not really necessary for him. After throwing about 135 innings each of the last two seasons, Tillman is at 131 now between Norfolk and Baltimore. "I feel great, other than that last start, it was weird, I felt drained. But...

Draft talk with MacPhail

Draft talk with MacPhail
When the First-Year Player Draft rolls around come June will the O's be in the market for a position player or another pitcher? Some wonder if, with a farm system stocked pretty well with pitching but some say short on position player talent, the O's will opt for the position player this time. The Orioles have the third pick in the draft following Washington and Pittsburgh. Andy MacPhail was a guest on the Scott Garceau show Tuesday on 105.7 FM the Fan in Baltimore, the O's flagship radio...

Post-game Trembley

Post-game Trembley
Manager Dave Trembley had the game lined up just as he wanted. Matt Albers covered the sixth inning and cleaned up Kevin Millwood's mess. Will Ohman played the role of lefty specialist to perfection. Set-up man Jim Johnson retired the side in order in the eighth to protect a one-run lead. Enter the closer. Exit the victory. So it didn't go exactly as planned. "That's the way it is. That's how it will be. There's nobody else who's going to close it. That's (Mike) Gonzalez. He's...

Andino stays

Andino stays
Utility infielder Robert Andino cleared waivers and has been outrighted to Triple-A Norfolk. The Orioles tried to work out a deal for Andino but couldn't find a trade partner. Concerns about his defense, especially at second base, led the Orioles to acquire Julio Lugo from the St. Louis Cardinals late in spring training. Andino has been told that he'll play shortstop at Norfolk, though the Orioles also have Blake Davis and Scott Moore. It's getting a little crowded down there.

Roberts comes through for the kids

Roberts comes through for the kids
The 3rd annual Brian's Baseball Bash at ESPN Zone was an overwhelming success. And Brian Roberts again came through as a gracious and accommodating host. Three years ago, Roberts decided to do something big for the University Of Maryland Hospital for Children. Roberts is a frequent visitor of the children patients at the hospital, freely giving of his time, but he wanted to do more. And the idea of a big fundraising event was born. Brian's Baseball Bash not only raises money for the...

Pitching, pitching and more pitching

Pitching, pitching and more pitching
There will be little not discussed at the Orioles organizational meetings in Sarasota, Florida. President of Baseball Operations Andy MacPhail will preside over the meetings, where the front office staff, manager Dave Trembley, Minor League personnel, and scouts will go over every player in the organization, from the 40-man Major League roster to the lowest level prospects. And you can be certain that a majority of the discussions will be about the Orioles' pitching and the best way to...

New season, new site

New season, new site
I'm sure you've noticed by now that MASNsports.com has received a face lift in the wake of the new baseball season. We've made a lot of changes - but hopefully ones that will make things easier and more enjoyable for you, the readers. Along with the new look, we've updated the system we use to publish entries, which won't mean a lot of changes to the articles from your side, but if you're looking for your answer in the comments section of this week's 'Where in the Yard?' you won't...

Millwood talks about his start

Millwood talks about his start
After a scoring change, credit Carl Crawford with a game-winning double. Here are some post-game quotes from Kevin Millwood to round out your evening: "Physically, I felt really good, felt like I was throwing the ball where I wanted to for the most part," he said. "Late, I started to get the ball up a little bit. It was decent, but to throw that many pitches and only get 15 outs, I've got to do a little better than that." Millwood said he was "a little disappointed" to only go...

Where there's a Will...

Where there's a Will...
I mentioned last night that Will Ohman and Mike Gonzalez were the only Orioles standing at their lockers after reporters entered the clubhouse. For the sake of accuracy, Ohman was sitting down. The media flocked to Gonzalez, of course, since he blew the save. Nobody wants to talk to the guy who retired both batters he faced in the seventh inning. Yawn. I was smart enough to interview Ohman before the game, though it mostly was due to a running joke we shared throughout spring training. Ohman...

Taking the heat

Taking the heat
Two players stood at their lockers as reporters were allowed inside the clubhouse: Will Ohman and Mike Gonzalez. Gonzalez, wearing an ice pack on his left shoulder, didn't hide in the trainers room or the players lounge. He knew that the media wanted him and he took the heat. "I felt really good. I felt the best I felt all spring. Just didn't go my way," he said. "My stuff was good, arm action was good. Just missed a couple pitches, left a couple pitches up. You got bases loaded,...

The Orioles' Opening Day stats

The Orioles' Opening Day stats
I've put together some stats to see how the Orioles players have fared in their careers on Opening Day. Right-hander Kevin Millwood will make his 7th career Opening Day start tonight. He is 2-4, 3.34 in previous openers. Last year, Millwood and Texas whipped Cleveland and Cliff Lee 9-1 in the opener as Millwood allowed just one run over seven innings. Millwood's Opening Day starts: 2003 - Philly at Fla: 6IP, 4H, 3R, 2ER, 1BB, 4K 2004 - Philly at Pitt: 6IP, 7H, 2R-ER, 0BB, 4K 2006 - Tex...

"Well, he's the closer," Trembley replied. "He's going to get the opportunity to save the games. If it's a save situation, he's going to pitch and I'm confident that he's going...

Post-game notes: Coming up short vs. Tampa

Post-game notes: Coming up short vs. Tampa
In suffering the blown save in the last of the 9th in Tampa's 4-3 win over the Orioles Tuesday, four of the five batters he faced reached vs. Mike Gonzalez. He threw 15 pitches, seven for strikes and gave up two runs in 1/3 of an inning. Up until the 9th, the O's pen worked three scoreless innings and Tampa was 1 for 9 vs. the pen. The Orioles fall to 35-22 all-time in openers. They lost on Opening Day for just the 3rd time in the last 11 games. They are 8-9 when opening on the road, now...

Heartbreak in Tampa

Heartbreak in Tampa
The bottom of the ninth set up nicely for new O's closer Mike Gonzalez. Tampa had the bottom of the lineup coming up. But Gonzalez gave up a two-run single to Carl Crawford with the bases loaded and one out as Tampa stole the game from the Birds 4-3 on Opening Night at the Trop. The O's offense had to rely on three solo homers on the night. The Birds just could not get the clutch hit to break this game before the ninth. They went 1 for 12 tonight with runners in scoring position, but...

Two birds with one stone

Two birds with one stone
Never has that cliché seemed as gruesome as it does when you say it in Birdland.... But in any case, you can take care of two O's items in one swoop with the new exclusive T-shirts from the Right Side Foundation. Nick and Christina Markakis's Right Side Foundation has announced a limited edition T-shirt sale to raise money for the right fielder's charitable foundation and the Babe Ruth Birthplace Foundation. The orange Under Armour Tech T-shirts sport the Right Side...

Not-so-great Gonzo

Not-so-great Gonzo
Mike Gonzalez struck out Pat Burrell on a 93 mph fastball to start the ninth inning. I guess he does turn it up once the lights are on. Maybe that only applies to his velocity. Sean Rodriguez singled and pinch-hitter Kelly Shoppach doubled to put runners on second and third - the ball coming within a few inches of clearing the fence for a walk-off home run. Gonzalez walked Jason Bartlett intentionally to load the bases, and Carl Crawford singled to right to score two runs. Rays 4, Orioles...

Tuesday baseball: Yankees at Orioles

Tuesday baseball: Yankees at Orioles
Game Preview Yankees (83-48) at Orioles (54-78) Despite a tough schedule coming up, the Orioles hope that September will be a better month for them than August was. The O's finished the month playing and pitching a little better and won six of the final 12 games in the month. But overall, the Orioles lost 20 of 30 games in August. Tonight they begin September by hosting the Yankees in game two of a three-game series. David Hernandez (4-6, 4.24) will pitch vs. the Yankees A.J. Burnett...

MacPhail on Matusz, Tillman and Bergesen
O's manager Dave Trembley today said he expected Brian Matusz and Chris Tillman to each make "three starts maximum" before being shut down for the remainder of this season. O's president Andy MacPhail also spoke about limiting appearances and innings for the rookie pitchers. "With Brian you have to remember this is his first year of pro experience. He doesn't have the innings built up that even Chris Tillman or Berken or Hernandez have that have been pitching professionally. You...
