The catching platoon for the Orioles has been put on hold, with Welington Castillo getting another start tonight against the Blue Jays at Camden Yards.
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Castillo is only the second catcher in Orioles history to go 4-for-4 with three or more RBIs, joining Andy Etchebarren on Sept. 28, 1973 against the Indians.
Also per Elias, Tim Beckham's 47 hits in August are the second-most in club history for a single month. Cal Ripken Jr. had 53 hits in September...
We're down to the last day before teams can begin expanding their rosters. The Orioles will bring up a pitcher to get their bullpen back to seven relievers and select the contract of a third catcher. They also could recall outfielder Joey Rickard rather than wait until Triple-A Norfolk's season ends on Monday.
Rickard hit his first home run for the Tides last night and it was a grand slam.
Here's the yearly reminder that anyone who comes up from the minors must be placed on the 40-man roster...
The hook came rather quickly today for Ubaldo Jiménez. So did the power that allowed the Orioles to recover, the letdown in the eighth and the subsequent response to it.
Manager Buck Showalter called upon his bullpen with two outs in the third inning, four runs already on the board for the Mariners and Jiménez at 54 pitches. He didn't need to see anymore.
A team can't rally for a win and extend its streak if it's giving up more runs than it scores. It says so in every book ever written...
Triple-A Norfolk's Pedro Ãlvarez is one of the players that the Orioles are discussing as part of their expanded September roster.
Ãlvarez hasn't played in the majors this season. He's been named to the International League's postseason All-Star team as a designated hitter after batting .241 with 30 doubles, 26 home runs, and 89 RBIs in 135 games.
The 26 home runs and 89 RBIs are the most by a Tides player since Norfolk became an Orioles affiliate in 2007. Ãlvarez leads the minors...
Welington Castillo remains behind the plate today as the Orioles close out their series against the Mariners and try to extend their winning streak to seven games. He's starting a fourth consecutive game.
Manager Buck Showalter is sticking with the hot hand.
Craig Gentry is in right field with the Mariners starting left-hander Ariel Miranda.
Manny Machado is batting .345 with 12 home runs and 34 RBIs in 27 games this month. His 12 home runs are a career-high for a single month.
Tim Beckham has...
You know that a pitcher must have been exceptional when the number of "pies" to his face during his postgame interview exceeds the hits he allowed.
Dylan Bundy wore three of them last night delivered by three of his teammates - his reward for holding the Mariners to Kyle Seager's bunt single in the fourth inning.
No Oriole had tossed a complete-game shutout since Miguel González on Sept. 3, 2014 versus the Reds. The last one-hitter came from Chris Tillman and Zach Britton on July 18, 2015...
Dylan Bundy brought his ace stuff again tonight, mixing an assortment of pitches that kept the Mariners off-balance and off the scoreboard.
The strikeouts were piling up, but not the runs to support him. Jonathan Schoop's solo homer in the first inning off Erasmo Ramirez had to suffice until the game moved through the middle innings.
Manny Machado led off the sixth with a home run, his 29th, matching Schoop's season total. Welington Castillo greeted reliever James Pazos with a homer in the...
Left-hander Donnie Hart spent one day with the Orioles, earning the win last night before heading back to Triple-A Norfolk.
The Orioles optioned Hart today and reinstated Dylan Bundy from the bereavement list. Bundy is starting tonight against the Mariners.
Manager Buck Showalter challenged the media earlier today to come up with suggestions. He preferred to keep his bullpen intact, but Hart was the most logical roster move.
Hart was recalled yesterday while the Orioles optioned Mike Wright,...
The Orioles are waiting to make their corresponding roster move for pitcher Dylan Bundy, who starts tonight against the Mariners if the rain subsides.
Left-hander Donnie Hart would appear to be the obvious choice after replacing Mike Wright, who got the call as Bundy's replacement for a few days. But anyone sent down must remain off the roster for 10 days. The Orioles couldn't bring back Hart on Sept. 1, for example, when rosters expand.
Manager Buck Showalter would like to keep his bullpen...
The Orioles removed Dylan Bundy from the bereavement list to make tonight's start. No corresponding move has been announced.
Mark Trumbo is out of the lineup. He's 1-for-20 lifetime against Mariners right-hander Erasmo RamÃrez.
Craig Gentry is in right field and Seth Smith is the designated hitter. Welington Castillo stays behind the plate.
Manny Machado is batting .312 (39-for-125) with eight doubles, a triple, eight home runs, 26 RBIs and 23 runs scored in 30 games against the American...
Jonathan Schoop dropped an RBI single into right-center field last night that increased a lead the Orioles would hand back the next inning, recapture in the bottom half, pad the following inning, lose again the next inning and ...
So much happened in a 7-6 win over the Mariners, including Chris Davis' tie-breaking double in the seventh, that Schoop's soft single no longer resonated. But it produced his team-leading 96th RBI and extended his record.
Schoop's home run Saturday afternoon in...
The Orioles finally are reminded of how it feels to be on the other side of .500.
Chris Davis doubled to score Trey Mancini in the seventh inning and break a tie, and the Orioles held on for a 7-6 victory over the Mariners before an announced crowd of 15,106 at Camden Yards.
Adam Jones hit the 250th home run of his career, and the Orioles improved to 66-65 with their fifth straight win and sixth in the last seven games. They're above .500 for the first time since June 11.
The Orioles also...
The Orioles recalled Donnie Hart today from Triple-A Norfolk because they wanted a rested left-hander in the bullpen while backing off Richard Bleier, who appeared in all three games of the Red Sox series over the weekend.
Bleier has pitched in the last five games over a span of six days, an unusual occurrence under manager Buck Showalter.
"But not with the amount we're using him," Showalter said.
This is true. Bleier has faced one batter in three of his last four outings, twice walking a...
The Orioles recalled left-hander Donnie Hart from Triple-A Norfolk today and optioned Mike Wright to the Tides.
Wright was recalled after the Orioles placed Dylan Bundy on the bereavement list. Bundy is slated to start Tuesday night.
Hart gives the Orioles a third left-hander in the bullpen for tonight's series opener against the Mariners.
Craig Gentry is in right field tonight and Welington Castillo is catching in back-to-back games.
Chris Tillman will try to lower his 10.69 ERA and .362...
A win tonight over the Mariners will allow the Orioles to move past them in the wild card chase and put the club above .500 for the first time since June 11 in New York.
Big game in a big series. They all qualify as such with September approaching.
The Orioles lost two of three in Seattle a few weeks ago and they don't get Yovani Gallardo in the rematch. They also don't get Felix Hernandez, who's been out for about a month with right shoulder bursitis and hasn't pitched in Baltimore since...
BOSTON - For the Orioles to get out of Boston with a sweep today, they'd have to win despite not scoring after the first inning. They'd have to use five pitchers, none of them their designated closer. Brad Brach would need a five-out save. The Red Sox would need to strand 13 runners.
Whatever it takes to get back to .500 and push more teams out of their path for the second wild card.
The Orioles earned their first road sweep with a 2-1 victory at Fenway Park. They outscored the Red Sox, who...
BOSTON - The Orioles took another early lead this afternoon and, in order to burn the Red Sox again, had to wait while Wade Miley kept playing with fire.
Two on and one out in the first inning. A two-out double in the second. Runners on the corners and two outs in the third. A one-out infield hit in the fourth. Bases loaded in the fifth. A leadoff double in the sixth.
Miley bent and bent, but the Red Sox couldn't break him or snap the Orioles' mini-winning streak.
Adam Jones and Trey Mancini...
BOSTON - Today marks the final game of Players Weekend and the unique uniforms and equipment. The Orioles are 2-0 since the switch.
"Is this the last day we're wearing the orange, the fluorescent?" said manager Buck Showalter. "If we win today, you may see these again."
Zach Britton threw in the bullpen earlier today and Showalter wants to get his closer into a game. Save situations always preferred, but not required.
Britton hasn't pitched since Wednesday afternoon, when his streak of...
BOSTON - The Orioles will go for the sweep today with a standard lineup that includes Trey Mancini in left field, Seth Smith in right and Mark Trumbo as the designated hitter.
No Ryan Flaherty.
Welington Castillo is catching.
The Orioles will try to reach .500 for the first time since Aug. 7. They're alone in third place, nine games behind the Red Sox, and two behind the Twins for the second wild card.
For the Orioles Tim Beckham SS Manny Machado 3B Jonathan Schoop 2B Adam Jones CF Trey...
BOSTON - If anyone has figured out the Orioles this summer, please step to the front of the class and start explaining.
They struggle with the last-place Athletics and bulldoze the first-place Red Sox. They've been so-so at home in the second half and so good at Fenway Park. A win today would produce their first three-game sweep in Boston since September 2014.
The wild card race that they had seemed to ditch is back in play, with the Orioles trailing the Twins by two games for the second...
