Orioles draft Ryan Ripken (updated)

Orioles draft Ryan Ripken (updated)
BOSTON - The Ripken name may be staying in the Orioles family. The Orioles just drafted Ryan Ripken - Cal Sr's grandson, Cal's son and Billy's nephew - in the 20th round of the First-Year Player Draft. Ripken, a left-handed-hitting first baseman at Gilman who also played basketball, has committed to the University of South Carolina. He received plenty of scholarship offers after batting .353 as a junior. This year, Ripken hit .377 with 25 RBIs at Gilman. Ripken, listed at 6 foot 6, 205...

In the 16th and 17th rounds... (local kid Hader chosen in 19th round)
BOSTON - It's Day 3 of the First-Year Player Drafts, and the picks are coming fast and furious. Teams don't need five minutes between selections. They don't stay on the clock for more than a few seconds. The Orioles used their 16th pick on pitcher Luc Rennie of Torrey Pines (Ca.) High School. Their 17th pick was used on pitcher Nick Grim of Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo. That's 12 pitchers chosen in the first 17 rounds. Rennie was 9-1 with a 0.89 ERA, 10 walks and 73 strikeouts in 70 2/3...

Random thoughts
BOSTON - I can't figure out who's going to make Saturday's start against the Phillies at Camden Yards. It's easier to eliminate certain pitchers, most notably left-hander Zach Britton, who would be working on short rest and who will stay on his rehab assignment. The Orioles apparently think Britton needs to improve the command of his pitches. They're in no rush to end his assignment. Cross him off the list. Manager Buck Showalter didn't mention Brad Bergesen when rattling off the names...

Gary Rajsich on the player he was surprised to get and other draft topics
After drafting 15 players over the first 15 rounds of the First-Year Player Draft the last two days, Orioles scouting director Gary Rajsich said he is quite pleased with the club's haul of talent so far. "I feel really good," Rajsich said. "You know, this draft was considered a very shallow draft and I couldn't be happier with what we were able to come up with." Rajsich was a guest last night on my radio show, "Baltimore Baseball Tonight," on 105.7 FM The Fan in Baltimore. I asked...

Jones: "If there's nothing broke, I'm not missing no game" (McLouth signed)
BOSTON - Adam Jones said he could have played yesterday if the schedule allowed it, and he had no intention of sitting out tonight's game. Jones underwent MRIs on both hands and wrists in Sarasota that came back negative. "I'm not missing no game. If there's nothing broke, I'm not missing no game," Jones said. "I wasn't worried. Since we had an off day and we were down there and we've got our hand specialist down there, it was fitting to let them see everything. It was cool to stay...

Updating Britton, Arrieta, Betemit, Markakis and more
BOSTON - Orioles manager Buck Showalter needs a fifth starter on Saturday, but he still hasn't decided who will take the mound. It won't be left-hander Zach Britton, who starts tonight at Triple-A Norfolk. Britton would be working on short rest Saturday. Also, the Orioles want to keep him on the injury-rehab assignment and make sure he's ready to be activated. Showalter said Britton's return isn't "imminent." "He needs to continue to pitch well at the level he's pitching at to be...

Showalter speaks after 8-6 10-inning win
BOSTON - Manager Buck Showalter described tonight's 8-6, 10-inning victory over the Red Sox as "one of our better wins of the year." "That was a real test for us a little bit," he said. It became more challenging when closer Jim Johnson blew his first save of the season. "J.J.'s picked us up so many times this year and the guys come in and picked him up. That was nice," Showalter said. Darren O'Day was warming in the bullpen, but Showalter allowed Johnson to pitch the 10th and pick...

Johnson blows first save (O's win 8-6)
BOSTON - The Orioles were one strike away from winning tonight's game and pulling into a first-place tie with Tampa Bay in the American League East. One strike. It seemed like a done deal with Jim Johnson on the mound, but nothing comes easily for the Orioles. Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit a two-run homer off Johnson on a 1-2 pitch to tie the game, 6-6, and send it into extra innings. David Ortiz singled off the Green Monster with one out and "Salty," as he's called here, cleared it with...

Poche is a 6-foot-3, 190-lb. hurler from Marcus High School in Flower Mound, Texas. He has a college commitment to the University of Arkansas. He was rated as the 99th-best prospect in the state of Texas by Baseball America. He becomes the second high school player and third pitcher the Orioles have taken in this...

More clubhouse chatter after tonight's victory
BOSTON - Jason Hammel said his knee wasn't an issue while working five innings tonight in the Orioles' 8-6, 10-inning victory over the Red Sox. "Knee is getting better each time out," he said. "It's manageable right now." Hammel couldn't put away the Red Sox early and his pitch count rose to 106. "Yeah, they're usually pretty patient," he said. "They were kind of aggressive tonight. Obviously, you want to get deeper into ballgames, but we still had a chance to win. "It was a...

Orioles put on clinic on how to lose a lead (O's lead 6-4)
BOSTON - The Orioles committed two errors and had one lapse in judgement in the fifth inning, and we're tied, 2-2, at Fenway Park. Mark Reynolds committed his eighth error of the season, and his second at first base, when he mishandled Daniel Nava's bouncer leading off the inning. Pitcher Jason Hammel was late covering first, but he never got the chance to find out how late. Mike Aviles squirted a single into left field, and Nava scored when Reynolds fielded Scott Podsednik's bunt and...

Jones with healthy at-bat in third, Wieters stays hot
BOSTON - If Red Sox left-hander Jon Lester is going to remain unbeaten against the Orioles, his teammates will have to rally from a two-run deficit. Adam Jones and Matt Wieters had back-to-back singles with two outs in the third inning to give the Orioles a 2-0 lead. Endy Chavez, batting ninth, reached on an infield hit with one out, and Robert Andino reached on an error by shortstop Mike Aviles. J.J. Hardy flied out, but Jones and Wieters came through in the clutch. Both runs off Lester...

Valentine's days in Baltimore are cherished memories for ex-Oriole

Valentine's days in Baltimore are cherished memories for ex-Oriole
As "Oops" moments go, the one committed by Fred Valentine in his rookie season with the Orioles in 1959 was a whopper. But the affable 77-year-old now laughs off his error of aggression as a youthful indiscretion. "Paul Richards was the manager when they brought me up in '59," Valentine said. "Gus Triandos was catching, and they put me in the lineup, hitting behind Triandos. Sure enough, he hit a ball off the right-field wall - and Gus was slow, really slow - and stopped at first base....

Orioles select Frederick native Branden Kline in second round (with video)
BOSTON - The First-Year Player Draft continues today, and the Orioles selected University of Virginia pitcher Branden Kline with the 65th overall pick. Kline, a graduate of Thomas Johnson High School in Frederick, was 7-3 with a 3.56 ERA and 94 strikeouts in 93 2/3 innings, and was named second-team All-ACC for the Cavaliers. He served as their closer last year before moving into the rotation as a junior. We'll find out later whether the Orioles project him as a starter or reliever. The Red...

Orioles make the most of an off-day (Delmonico note)

Orioles make the most of an off-day (Delmonico note)
BOSTON - Yesterday was a good day. The Orioles didn't lose a game or suffer an injury. Those open dates on the schedule can be a blessing. Adam Jones' MRIs in Sarasota came back negative. The left wrist and hand are fine except for the contusions. The right wrist and hand are fine except for the contusions. His ego might be bruised, too, because of the offense's struggles, but look for Jones to be in tonight's lineup. Nick Markakis was told yesterday that his right wrist is healing...
