SARASOTA, Fla, - For the Orioles:
Endy Chavez RF
Matt Antonelli 2B
Nick Johnson DH
Wilson Betemit 1B
Joe Mahoney LF
Taylor Teagarden C
Ryan Flaherty SS
Josh Bell 3B
Xavier Avery CF
Alfredo Simon RHP
You'll notice that Mahoney is playing left field. Go get it, Big Irish. Also, Flaherty has a chance to show that he's adept at playing shortstop.
The Orioles are supposed to take three "regulars" on every trip, but teams always dance around that unwritten rule. I'm not sure who qualifies in...
SARASOTA, Fla. - Zach Britton and Jim Johnson threw their bullpen sessions side-by-side this morning before heading indoors for a team meeting.
Both pitchers are progressing as the club had hoped. So far, there haven't been any setbacks.
Britton was throwing off a regular mound for the second time this spring. He pushed his pitch count beyond 30 and mixed in his slider and changeup.
"I think it was a lot better than the first one," he said. "I felt more comfortable on the mound today. I...
SARASOTA, Fla. - Left-hander Zach Britton will throw his bullpen session this morning, a day earlier than he originally expected.
"I was feeling good and they had a couple different plans mapped out, depending on how I felt," Britton said. "This probably gets me on a mound for a game a little sooner."
Britton will do some light tossing tomorrow and is expected to throw again on Tuesday, either in the bullpen or for batting practice.
Meanwhile, Wei-Yin Chen didn't sound discouraged...
SARASOTA, Fla. - The visiting Orioles swept the home Orioles in this two-game intrasquad series, winning today, 3-2, at Ed Smith Stadium.
J.J. Hardy hit 30 home runs last season, and he's got one this spring with a bases-empty shot off Armando Galarraga in the first inning. It won't count in the Grapefruit League standings, but we saw it happen.
"It's always fun," he said. "I don't even know if I've hit a homer yet in coaches BP, so it kind of caught me off guard."
Asked if he's...
SARASOTA, Fla. - I apologize for the lateness of this intrasquad update, but I'm having more laptop issues - and this one is brand new - and I'm unable to tweet on my iPhone inside the stadium. A Twitter glitch, I suppose.
Anyway, here are a few highlights and lowlights. I'll try to file quotes later.
Dylan Bundy was outstanding in his debut, striking out Adam Jones and Mark Reynolds looking and retiring Matt Wieters on a lazy fly ball to right field. He threw Jones fastballs away for the...
SARASOTA, Fla. - Most of the regulars had left the Ed Smith Stadium complex by the time yesterday's intrasquad game ended and the clubhouse reopened to the media, so there wasn't a chance to speak with third baseman Mark Reynolds until this morning.
Reynolds made two sparkling plays at third yesterday, charging a ball and throwing out speedy Xavier Avery, and diving to his left to rob Taylor Teagarden of a hit. It's fair to point out that those gems occurred in a "meaningless" intrasquad...

SARASOTA, Fla. - Double-A Bowie outfielder LJ Hoes tripled off Greg Burke in the top of the eighth inning to score the tie-breaking run and give the visiting Orioles a 2-1 victory over the home Orioles at Ed Smith Stadium.
"I knew we were going to win today. That's for sure," manager Buck Showalter said.
Cover the lockers in plastic and pop those champagne corks.
"It was very fun, just to get the jitters out and get out there and get active and get acclimated to playing baseball again,"...
SARASOTA, Fla. - Tommy Hunter is still scheduled to throw a simulated game on Tuesday after being scratched from his exhibition start against the Red Sox in Fort Myers.
Hunter downplayed the discomfort in his lower back, saying, "I'm fine. It's more of a precautionary deal. I'm not concerned at all. I can still pitch."
Hunter played long-toss this morning and seemed to be throwing with maximum effort.
"I threw bullpens with it, but it just wasn't getting any better, so we're just...
SARASOTA, Fla. - Mark Reynolds has made two sensational plays at third base today, charging one ball and making a diving stop to his left on a sharp grounder.
Other highlights include Brian Matusz's second inning, when he retired Adam Jones on a soft liner to first base and Matt Wieters on a fly ball to right, and struck out Reynolds.
Pedro Strop disposed of his three batters so quickly, he was allowed to face a fourth. He retired Wilson Betemit on a fly ball to center, Jones on a bouncer...
SARASOTA, Fla. - Once restricted to stretching exercises and playing catch, Brian Roberts is now taking ground balls at second base and batting practice in the indoor batting cage.
"It's definitely part of the progression," he said. "Every day that goes by and you don't feel worse, you're encouraged for sure."
The next step is taking live batting practice on the field against one of the pitchers, instead of a coach.
"At some point coming up, hopefully," he said. "I talk to my...
SARASOTA, Fla. - I'm told that a fan drove down here from Baltimore because I wrote that the intrasquad games were open to the public.
I did? Was I snacking on vodka-soaked olives?
I'm pretty sure I made it clear that the games were closed to the public.
Tommy Hunter played long-toss this morning to test his lower back. He was firing the ball from an impressive distance. He looks fine to me, but I'm not a doctor or an athletic trainer. I only play one on the blog.
Jason Berken, who's...
The Orioles have announced plans for the first game of their 2012 spring training season and their third season in Sarasota. The team will face the Pittsburgh Pirates at the newly renovated Ed Smith Stadium on Monday, March 5, at 7:05 p.m.
On Monday and throughout the season, ballpark gates will open two hours prior to the scheduled first pitch. All fans will receive a 2012 spring training magnet schedule presented by the Sarasota Convention & Visitors Bureau and the first 1,000 female fans in...
SARASOTA, Fla. - If you woke up this morning and your heart was racing, it wasn't the three desserts you ate before bed. The Orioles are playing their first intrasquad game today.
It's like Christmas in March.
Jake Arrieta will oppose Jason Hammel, but I'm not sure which one is on the "orange" team and which is on the "black."
Other pitchers will include Kevin Gregg, Matt Lindstrom, Brian Matusz, Alfredo Simon, Dana Eveland, Darren O'Day, Pedro Strop, Zach Phillips, Brad Bergesen,...
SARASOTA, Fla. - Zach Britton and Jim Johnson will throw in the bullpen tomorrow. This will be Britton's first time on a mound.
"That's good news," manager Buck Showalter said.
Showalter also noted that Jason Berken (hamstring) "has made some strides, feeling better." And Willie Eyre (groin) "is pretty close to rejoining us" after playing catch today and participating in some fielding drills.
I told you earlier that Tommy Hunter has been scratched from Tuesday's exhibition game...
Right now you'd have to look real hard to find some concern about Orioles 2011 first-round draft pick Dylan Bundy. And you still may not find a thing. The scouts have raved about him since the O's drafted him and right now he's in major league camp clearly living up to the hype at this point.
None of this will help him get an out once the minor league season starts in April and he has yet to throw one professional pitch, but if you doubt Bundy's talent and potential at this point you'll...
SARASOTA, Fla. - Tsuyoshi Wada will play catch again tomorrow, assuming his left elbow responds favorably to today's session, and he could return to the mound sometime next week.
Wada had his elbow drained on Sunday and received a cortisone injection. He was shut down until today.
"I felt very good. I felt much better than I did before I took this rest," he said through his interpreter.
"I'm going to play catch tomorrow and then we're going to see how things go and make a new plan....
SARASOTA, Fla. - Tommy Hunter has been scratched from making Tuesday's exhibition start against the Red Sox in Fort Myers because of lower-back stiffness. Hunter will stay back in camp and throw a two-inning simulated game.
This move is done mostly as a precaution. It's not like the Orioles are shutting him down. They just want to control his environment - prevent him from having to field balls or get too deep into counts if he's tiring.
I'll post manager Buck Showalter's comments...
SARASOTA, Fla. - Today is Photo Day at the complex, when players in their home whites are paraded in front of photographers from various media outlets. It's a spring training tradition. It's also the last thing they want to do, but it's one of their responsibilities.
Players will then head to the back fields as usual for another round of catch, infield drills and batting practice. The intrasquad games begin on Friday.
Dylan Bundy will throw an inning in Saturday's game. And no matter how...
With as many farm teams and players that there are in the Orioles organization, there will always be some injured minor league players to try and keep track of.
Here is a partial list of some pitchers that spent some time injured last year and how they are doing now. I'll update more from the minor leagues as opening day gets closer:
* Right-hander Clay Schrader didn't pitch after July 25 last season due to a right elbow flexor mass strain. But he has already reported to minor league camp...
