Dempsey's Brewpub and Restaurant now open on non-game days
If you live or work near Camden Yards, you now have a new dining option for days when the Orioles aren't playing at home. Beginning today, Dempsey's Brewpub and Restaurant is now open for both lunch and dinner. You can eat, drink and be merry on the first floor of the B&O Warehouse beginning at 11 a.m. Slide into Dempsey's - the namesake of former O's catcher, 1983 World Series MVP and current MASN broadcaster Rick Dempsey - for a midday meal, then stop back after work for another of the...

Should Andino continue to bat ninth?

Should Andino continue to bat ninth?
NEW YORK - I'd just like to point out that I've got a 5-2 road record this season. Chicago couldn't take me. Neither could New York. So what have you got, Boston? I'm getting ready to board another train, where I'll spend about four hours blogging, tweeting, reading or sleeping. I may do all four and shoot for the Mount Rushmore of rail travel. The Orioles are off today, but you can bet that Robert Andino will be in Friday's lineup, and he'll be batting ninth again. Manager Buck...

Should Orioles fans start to dream big?

Should Orioles fans start to dream big?
The Orioles began a grueling part of their schedule Monday. It began with the three games they just played in New York to be followed by three games this weekend in Boston. They then return home for four with Texas, three with Tampa Bay and two more with New York. That is a stretch of 15 games against four teams that all could win 90 or more games this year and be playoff teams. Counting the Yankees' record of 12-9 at the start of the series with the Orioles, those four teams have a combined...

More dazzling pitching as the road trip starts on a high note

More dazzling pitching as the road trip starts on a high note
If you're an Orioles fan, you can pinch yourself this morning -but it might hurt, because the Orioles really did win a series in the Bronx by outscoring the Yankees 12-1 the last two nights. They left New York with a record of 16-9, going seven games over .500 for the first time since July 19, 2005. They continued their season-opening run of good baseball and amazing pitching in New York. There are plenty of other stats worth noting after last night's game: * The Yankees entered this...

Anthony Amobi: It's been a fun - and surprising - run so far for O's

Anthony Amobi: It's been a fun - and surprising - run so far for O's
Well, for fans of the Orioles, the calendar has flipped from April to May and it has been a surprising season so far. As of this morning, the Orioles are flying high with a 16-9 record, and sit one game behind the first-place Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East standings. There are some very compelling and unexpected storylines in the game today, and the Orioles definitely qualify as of one them. Seriously, I do not think many fans, media or so-called experts thought that this team...

Anthony Amobi: Wieters' emergence silences his critics

Anthony Amobi: Wieters' emergence silences his critics
Heading into the 2012 season, Matt Wieters has emerged as a leader for the Orioles. Many have argued whether or not he is a bust - despite only having played in the major leagues for less than three full seasons. That being said, he is far from that. So Wieters has not turned into the next Johnny Bench or a Joe Mauer with power. The promise of the night when he debuted is still there, but it has taken a while to come to the surface. Various television shows, Web sites, sports talk radio...

Jake Arrieta with a gem as the Orioles take the series in New York

Jake Arrieta with a gem as the Orioles take the series in New York
It was a night the Orioles could enjoy in New York. Jake Arrieta pitched the Orioles past the Yankees tonight 5-0 as the Orioles take the series two wins to one after losing the opener Monday and they also hand Ivan Nova his first loss since last June 3. Matt Wieters and Nick Markakis hit solo homers to back Arrieta as the Orioles improved to 16-9 on the year to go seven games over the .500 mark for the first time since July 19, 2005 when they were 50-43. The Orioles held the Yankees to...

Getting a charge out of the Orioles' battery

Getting a charge out of the Orioles' battery
NEW YORK - You only had to look 60 feet, 6 inches to find two of the key components in the Orioles' 5-0 victory over the Yankees. Jake Arrieta tore through the Yankees' lineup, shutting them out on five hits over eight innings, walking none and striking out nine. Catcher Matt Wieters guided Arrieta through yet another quality start by the Orioles and added a home run, double, single, walk and two RBIs. "He was great," Wieters said of Arrieta, who hadn't won since Opening Day. "He had a...

Can the Orioles offense pick up the pace and join the pitchers?

Can the Orioles offense pick up the pace and join the pitchers?
On April 16, the Orioles scored 10 runs at Chicago in a win over the White Sox. But then they scored a total of just 30 runs over their next 10 games. That stretch ended with another 10-run outburst, this one Saturday at Camden Yards against Oakland. With seven more runs last night, the O's offense is showing signs of possibly breaking out a bit right now. Over those last four games, the Orioles' team batting average is .298 with 39 hits. They have scored 23 runs in those games with seven...

Showalter speaks after 5-0 win

Showalter speaks after 5-0 win
NEW YORK - Start spreading the news: The Orioles took two of three in the Bronx. It all started tonight with Jake Arrieta's masterful performance. He shut out the Yankees on five hits over eight innings, didn't walk a batter and tied his career high with nine strikeouts. "I thought the biggest inning was the one after we scored the one run. Go back out there and throw a zero," manager Buck Showalter said after the 5-0 victory. "Jake was as good as you can be, especially with all the...

Arrieta brings his A game (O's win 5-0)
NEW YORK - Once again, an Orioles starter pitched deep in a game tonight. It all starts with starting pitching. Jake Arrieta was superb, blanking the Yankees on five hits over a career-high eight innings. He didn't walk a batter and tied his career high with nine strikeouts. Arrieta also tied Jason Hammel for the longest outing by an Orioles starter this season. Hammel lasted eight innings on April 8. Robert Andino has three hits and a walk from the ninth spot in the order. He's now...

Orioles increase lead, Wada gives statement (updated)

Orioles increase lead, Wada gives statement (updated)
NEW YORK - The Orioles are 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position tonight, and they've stranded eight runners through the sixth inning. Good thing Jake Arrieta is shutting out the Yankees. Robert Andino's infield hit scored Chris Davis in the sixth to increase the Orioles' lead to 2-0. Endy Chavez lined into a double play - the third inning that's ended with him at the plate. He smoked that ball, but he hit it directly at third baseman Eduardo Nunez, who replaced Eric Chavez in the...

Orioles won't get Beckett Saturday (Wieters homers)

Orioles won't get Beckett Saturday (Wieters homers)
NEW YORK - The Orioles aren't the only team adjusting its rotation this weekend. According to a tweet from @GordonEdes, the Red Sox have scratched Josh Beckett from Saturday's start against the Orioles because of a stiff lat muscle. Aaron Cook, just brought up from the minors, will start in Beckett's place. Beckett is 7-5 with a 4.25 ERA in 18 career starts against the Orioles. Cook has never faced the Orioles, though they saw him at least once in spring training. Wilson Betemit is...

Showalter talks about rotation, Reimold and Wada

Showalter talks about rotation, Reimold and Wada
NEW YORK - Manager Buck Showalter explained to reporters earlier today why Tommy Hunter is being held back until Sunday in Boston, with Jason Hammel moving up a day. "Tommy's had an ingrown toenail that he's had cut on," Showalter said. "I just want to give him a couple extra days and get him back to 100 percent. He'll tell you that he is, but we had an opportunity and we'll see if we can give him a couple extra days there. "He threw today. He's fine. He feels good. I just thought we...

Minor league notes on Pomeranz, Delmonico, Hoes and more

Minor league notes on Pomeranz, Delmonico, Hoes and more
Orioles minor league right-handed pitcher Stu Pomeranz may be off to the best start of any pitcher on the farm right now not named Dylan Bundy. In his first two outings with Triple-A Norfolk, since moving up from Double-A Bowie, Pomeranz has pitched 3 2/3 shutout and hitless innings with nine strikeouts. So of 11 Triple-A outs he has recorded, nine have come via a strikeout. Between Bowie and Norfolk, the 27-year-old Pomeranz has pitched 17 innings allowing seven hits and no earned runs with...

Hunter pushed back one day

Hunter pushed back one day
NEW YORK - Tommy Hunter and Jason Hammel are being flip-flopped in the rotation for this weekend's series in Boston. Hunter had an ingrown toenail removed and is being given an extra day to recover, which lines him up to pitch on Sunday at Fenway Park. Hammel will start on Saturday. The day off tomorrow allows for extra rest for everyone in the rotation. Also, Zach Britton is scheduled to pitch in a simulated game on Saturday at the Ed Smith Stadium complex in Sarasota. Britton will start...

Wada will undergo elbow surgery

Wada will undergo elbow surgery
NEW YORK - Orioles pitcher Tsuyoshi Wada has decided to undergo ligament-reconstructive surgery on his left elbow, ending his 2012 season before it actually started. Dr. Lewis Yocum will perform the surgery on May 11 in Los Angeles. Yocum removed bone chips from Wada's elbow in 2007. An MRI and CT scan confirmed a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament. The Orioles let Wada decide whether to have surgery or attempt to rehab. The Orioles signed Wada to a two-year, $8.14 million...

A little more on Reimold

A little more on Reimold
NEW YORK - Before I head to Yankee Stadium for tonight's series finale, I wanted to explain more clearly what's happening with Nolan Reimold. Well, the "clearly" part might be a reach, but anyway ... Reimold's bulging disk is located in his cervical spine, and it's more neck than back. At least, that's how it's been explained to me. I'm not a doctor, so I'm depending on others to talk me through it. The timetable hasn't changed. Orioles manager Buck Showalter is still hoping that...

Rotating the starters (and Reimold note)

Rotating the starters (and Reimold note)
NEW YORK - The news came fast and furious yesterday, beginning with outfielder Nolan Reimold's tingling fingers and continuing with hitting coach Jim Presley's kidney stone. I hadn't left my hotel room in Times Square and my day already had taken a busy turn. As I walked into the press box at Yankee Stadium, still beaming at my ability to take the D train in the proper direction on this day, the Orioles issued a news release explaining that the Brooks Robinson statue unveiling had been...
