Showalter speaks after 5-2 loss

Showalter speaks after 5-2 loss
Orioles manager Buck Showalter gave a figurative tip of the cap to Oakland starter Brandon McCarthy following a 5-2 loss at Camden Yards. He also talked about his own starter, Jake Arrieta, who didn't make it through the sixth inning. "We didn't do much off McCarthy," Showalter said. "I think that was a big part of it. Jake almost got through six innings. He never really got in sync rhythm-wise. His command wasn't what it's capable of, but he kept us in the ballgame. I thought the two...

Early offense carries Oakland to a win in the series opener

Early offense carries Oakland to a win in the series opener
The Orioles run of excellent starting pitching ended tonight as Oakland scored three early runs off Jake Arrieta and went on to a 5-2 win over the Orioles in front of 18,297 on a chilly night at Camden Yards. After watching their starters pitch to an ERA of 0.71 during a four-game win streak, allowing just two earned runs over the last 25 1/3 innings, Arrieta allowed four runs on four hits tonight over 5 2/3 innings. He takes the loss to fall to 1-2 with an ERA of 4.45. Arrieta had an ERA of...

Gregg returns to mound (O's lose 5-2)

Gregg returns to mound (O's lose 5-2)
Kevin Gregg made his first appearance tonight since April 18 in Chicago, his introduction greeted with boos from what remained of an announced crowd of 18,297. By the third out, they were applauding Gregg, who struck out the first two batters he faced in the ninth inning and induced a fly ball to shallow right field. Gregg threw 10 pitches, seven for strikes, and lowered his ERA from 9.64 to 7.94. Gregg has turned in two straight scoreless outings since allowing six of seven Blue Jays to...

Arrieta can't complete the sixth (O's trail 4-2, ump tackles fan)

Arrieta can't complete the sixth (O's trail 4-2, ump tackles fan)
Jake Arrieta threw 70 pitches through the third inning tonight, giving the impression that he wouldn't stick around much longer and the Orioles would make some feeble attempt to retrieve Jason Berken before he unpacked his bags in Norfolk. Arrieta needed 15 pitches to complete the fourth and nine to get through the fifth. The A's were doing him a favor by no longer making him work. Well, they worked him over a bit in the sixth, and he's out of the game. Josh Reddick homered with one out...

Will the Orioles extend the quality start stat tonight? (updated)

Will the Orioles extend the quality start stat tonight? (updated)
This stat surely will not hold up forever, but when the Orioles get a quality start from their starting pitcher this year, they are 9-0. By definition a quality start is one where the starting pitcher works six innings or more allowing three earned runs or less. Yes, that is a 4.50 ERA, but most quality starts produce single game stats much better than that. Right-hander Jake Arrieta will try to extend that streak tonight for an Orioles pitching staff that has worked to an ERA of 0.73 during...

Berken headed back to Norfolk

Berken headed back to Norfolk
The Orioles made room for second baseman Robert Andino on their 25-man roster today by optioning pitcher Jason Berken to Triple-A Norfolk. Andino rejoined the team today after spending two days in Miami for the birth of his third child and first daughter. He's starting at second base tonight. Manager Buck Showalter wanted to make sure there wouldn't be a corresponding move involving the disabled list before Berken came off the roster. Jim Johnson was discharged from Saint Agnes Hospital...

Matt Wieters on Jake Arrieta and that inning in Anaheim

Matt Wieters on Jake Arrieta and that inning in Anaheim
Jake Arrieta takes the mound for the Orioles tonight in the first game of this three-game weekend series with Oakland. He is 1-1 with an ERA of 4.01 over his first four starts. Arrieta has looked strong this year and fully recovered from having bone spurs removed from his right elbow last August. He has said that procedure will benefit him in many ways and catcher Matt Wieters came up with one of those ways today that I had not heard mentioned before. "I think it helps now that he can get...

Reimold's running produces run (O's down 3-1)

Reimold's running produces run (O's down 3-1)
The Orioles have jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning, and full credit goes to leadoff hitter Nolan Reimold. Reimold doubled to right-center field off Oakland starter Brandon McCarthy, hustling into second base ahead of the throw. Reimold tagged and took third on J.J. Hardy's fly ball to left - something you don't always see on a ball hit to that side - and he tagged again and scored on Nick Markaki's liner to medium left. Reimold slid wide of catcher Kurt Suzuki's attempted tag,...

Andino returns, Flaherty stays in lineup

Andino returns, Flaherty stays in lineup
Robert Andino is starting at second base tonight after missing the last two games while being on paternity leave. The Orioles haven't announced a corresponding roster move, but reliever Jason Berken is expected to return to Triple-A Norfolk if no one goes on the disabled list. Berken is at the ballpark, probably in a holding pattern. Also, Rule 5 pick Ryan Flaherty, who started at second base in Andino's absence, moves to third base tonight. For the Orioles: Nolan Reimold LF J.J. Hardy...

Jim Johnson returns to the Orioles clubhouse after hospital stay

Jim Johnson returns to the Orioles clubhouse after hospital stay
After spending a few nights at Baltimore's St. Agnes hospital with food poisoning, pitcher Jim Johnson was back in the Orioles clubhouse today. He may have lost a few pounds, but not his sense of humor. "At different points of time, it was pretty bad. You're going to have to wash your mics after this," he told reporters at his locker. Johnson was clearly in good spirits, but it sounds like there is a decent chance that we will not see him get in the game tonight. "Yeah, it might be a...

Orioles reinstate infielder Robert Andino from paternity list; right-handed pitcher Jason Berken optioned to Triple-A Norfolk

Orioles reinstate infielder Robert Andino from paternity list; right-handed pitcher Jason Berken optioned to Triple-A Norfolk
The Orioles today announced that they have reinstated infielder Robert Andino from the Paternity List and optioned right-handed pitcher Jason Berken to Triple-A Norfolk. Andino, 28, started the first 17 games of the season (16 at 2B, one at SS) and batted .300/.333/.433 in 60 at-bats. He missed two games for the birth of his daughter, Amarise Hazel Andino. Berken, 28, has pitched to a 0.60 ERA (15.0IP, ER) with four walks and 10 strikeouts in three starts for the Tides this season.

Waiting on the roster move

Waiting on the roster move
Orioles manager Buck Showalter will wait until after batting practice to announce today's roster move. Showalter is playing it safe, saying he's been burned in the past by revealing the move and having a player injured in batting practice. He'll make sure everyone is off the field safely. Look for an announcement around 5:30 p.m. Kevin Gregg and pitching coach Rick Adair met with Showalter behind closed doors this afternoon, but the reliever isn't headed to the disabled list. Gregg had...

This, that and the other

This, that and the other
The Oakland Athletics are here for a three-game series that begins tonight, and Jake Arrieta gets first crack at them. Arrieta has made one career start against Oakland, taking the loss after allowing three earned runs (four total) and six hits in seven innings. Oakland's Brandon McCarthy is winless in three decisions this year despite a 3.38 ERA. He's 1-1 with a 4.97 ERA in seven career appearances (five starts) against the Orioles, with 36 hits, 14 walks and 16 strikeouts in 29 innings....

Updating Lino and some minor league roster news

Updating Lino and some minor league roster news
It looks like the injury that forced Single-A Delmarva catcher Gabriel Lino out of a game last night is not that serious, and at this point, it doesn't appear he is headed for the disabled list. Lino suffered a slightly jammed left middle finger when he caught a pitch in an awkward fashion. He left the game and could miss a couple of upcoming Shorebirds games. At 18, Lino is the youngest player on the Delmarva team but is a young player playing to pretty strong early season reviews for both...

Not functioning on all cylinders, but Orioles are winning and in first place

Not functioning on all cylinders, but Orioles are winning and in first place
Baseball can be a hard game to explain sometimes. Consider the 2012 Baltimore Orioles. They lead the American League with 22 errors. They are batting just .213 as a team with runners in scoring position. Their homer leader from last season hasn't hit even one yet. Their starting shortstop is batting .178. They had to use their second and third closers in their most recent series. One of their hottest hitters, Nolan Reimold, has missed seven games. They are tied for ninth in the league in runs...

Matthew Taylor: Bullish on the bullpen

Matthew Taylor: Bullish on the bullpen
The Orioles currently have one of the game's best relief corps. The bullpen's 1.96 ERA and 10 saves are tops in baseball. Take a moment to let that sink in. The team that for the past decade or more has been synonymous with late-inning meltdowns (think Mother's Day Massacre) and historic failings (think 30-3) has one of the game's finest late-inning outfits. Earlier in the week, fellow guest blogger Heath Bintliff of Dempsey's Army proclaimed, "For the first time in years, I am loving...

Showalter talks about Johnson and Johnson after 5-2 win

Showalter talks about Johnson and Johnson after 5-2 win
Orioles manager Buck Showalter passed along some good news on Jim Johnson and some words of encouragement regarding first baseman Nick Johnson. First, the closer, who remains hospitalized but is apparently close to being sent home. Buck Showalter speaks with the media following the Orioles' 5-2 win over the Blue Jays "We're looking forward to getting J.J. back, and the hope is that he gets out tomorrow morning if he keeps his food down," Showalter said. "I know he ate tonight and has a...

Jones, Matusz and Flaherty talk about the Orioles' win over Toronto

Jones, Matusz and Flaherty talk about the Orioles' win over Toronto
After the latest Orioles win was over, Adam Jones was happy to see the Orioles get a sweep of Toronto, but wished that Brian Matusz could have been rewarded for a good outing with his first win since last June 6. "I just wish we could have gotten him a W," Jones said. "Starters get the wins and losses and relievers get the holds and saves. That is how I personally like it. But we won as a team and he understands that. He threw six, very, very good innings and I'm very proud of what I saw...
