Wada and Johnson updates

Wada and Johnson updates
SARASOTA, Fla. - Japanese pitcher Tsuyoshi Wada had fluid removed from his left elbow today and he received a cortisone injection. The Orioles will know more about his condition on Tuesday. Wada apparently develops inflammation in the elbow every year around this time, so there doesn't seem to be much concern. X-rays taken today didn't reveal anything new beyond the swelling. No structural damage. "We'll let it quiet down and get him back on the mound," manager Buck Showalter said....

Wada missing from workout

Wada missing from workout
SARASOTA. Fla. - Following up on my earlier tweet, pitcher Tsuyoshi Wada isn't participating in today's workout. Wada reported to the facility, but apparently is dealing with some sort of an injury. Manager Buck Showalter will provide more information after the workout. Jim Johnson threw his first bullpen session at 9 a.m., and Showalter said it "went great." Zach Britton threw off flat ground again, long-tossing and simulating his delivery. Brian Roberts stretched and played catch,...

Notes and quotes from Saturday's workout

Notes and quotes from Saturday's workout
SARASOTA, Fla. - The Orioles will play intrasquad games on March 2 and 3, and they'll probably add at least one more before breaking camp. My guess is the off-day on March 19 will end up being a pretty busy day for the hard-working media. Same as last spring. The Orioles will take live batting practice Sunday, though it's mostly "tracking," with hitters instructed not to swing. You'll still get some guys hacking here and there, but it's more like pitching practice. The Orioles will use...

Taking a look at the Ryan Braun situation

Taking a look at the Ryan Braun situation
It sure sounds like Ryan Braun is losing in the court of public opinion. The Brewers' slugger and current National League MVP had his 50-game suspension for testing positive for elevated testosterone overturned and he spoke very passionately in presenting his defense publicly on Friday. Yet this is an era where we have come to expect anyone in the public eye that gets disgraced in some way to spin the matter to put themselves in the best possible light. It's a time where sports fans are...

Pittsburgh Pirates, Baltimore Orioles partner with the Miracle League of Manasota to dedicate first Miracle League Field in Sarasota-Bradenton area
The Baltimore Orioles and Pittsburgh Pirates today joined Sarasota County and the Miracle League of Manasota in the dedication of the first Miracle League Field in the Sarasota-Bradenton area. As part of the partnership, which also includes dozens of private-sector supporters, the Pirates and Orioles donated a total of $150,000 towards the construction of the baseball field designed specifically for children and adults with special needs. The Miracle League of Manasota Field presented by the...

Quick updates on Johnson and Britton

Quick updates on Johnson and Britton
SARASOTA, Fla. - The Orioles will take the field at 10 a.m. for today's workout. No bullpen sessions are scheduled, just more pitchers fielding practice, pick-off drills and batting practice. Continue to breathe normally. Jim Johnson got his days mixed up. He's scheduled to throw off a full mound on Sunday, not today. I'm not sure what I'll do with my free time. Johnson (lower back) has progressed from flat ground to a half mound to a full mound. He still hasn't been told whether he's...

Berken better but not back

Berken better but not back
SARASOTA, Fla. - Orioles reliever Jason Berken received treatment on his sore left hamstring again today and didn't take the field with the rest of his teammates. Berken iced the back of his leg and also did some stretching exercises. "It's feeling better," he said. "It's improved from yesterday. That's a good thing. As far as a timetable goes, I can't tell you, but it feels like it's improved." Pitchers have returned to the clubhouse, but position players continue to take batting...

This, that and the other

This, that and the other
SARASOTA, Fla. - Welcome to the spring training edition of "This, that and the other." It's pretty much the same as the Maryland edition, only with tan lines. Executive vice president Dan Duquette wouldn't comment yesterday on the club's level of interest in Cuban outfielder Jorge Soler. Fred Ferreira, the organization's executive director of international recruiting, flew to the Dominican Republic over the weekend to scout Soler and five other Cuban players. I guess that counts as...

Markakis says he's "maybe a little ahead of schedule"

Markakis says he's "maybe a little ahead of schedule"
SARASOTA, Fla. - Right fielder Nick Markakis took batting practice earlier today, though he's not using maximum effort and continues to be brought along slowly as he recovers from abdominal surgery last month. He remains optimistic that he'll play on opening day. "I feel great," he said. "I know I'm not there, but I'm on schedule or maybe a little ahead of schedule, depending on how you look at it. Everything feels good. It's just a matter of getting my strength back down there now. At...

Roberts meets the press

Roberts meets the press
SARASOTA, Fla. - Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts seemed cautiously optimistic today about the way he's progressing, but it remains a mystery whether he'll be ready for the April 6 opener against the Minnesota Twins at Camden Yards. Roberts can't say for sure when or if he'll play in an exhibition game. He's truly day-to-day as he works toward a return. Here are some quotes from Roberts. "I'm feeling pretty good in general. I took part in some beginning baseball activities -...

Quick hits from camp

Quick hits from camp
SARASOTA, Fla. - Second baseman Brian Roberts met with reporters after today's workout. I'll post quotes later. Roberts said he's "feeling pretty good in general," but he can't offer a timetable for when he'll be ready to play in an exhibition game. He's limited to "beginning" baseball activities. It's a "systematic progression" for Roberts. "Every day that goes by, you're more encouraged," he said. Jason Berken has a mild strain of his left hamstring, which he sustained...

Roberts on field, Berken absent (updated)

Roberts on field, Berken absent (updated)
SARASOTA, Fla. - The Orioles took the field an hour early for their first full-squad workout, beginning their stretching exercises at 11 a.m. The clubhouse never opened to the media. The schedule changed because so few position players needed to take their physicals this morning. Most of them already had reported. Second baseman Brian Roberts is on the field. He chatted briefly with pitcher

Angle says thanks on his way out of town

Angle says thanks on his way out of town
Matt Angle is not the kind of guy that would likely ever publicly say anything negative about his organization or teammates, but when he had praise for the Orioles on his way out of the organization Thursday afternoon, it sure sounded heartfelt and sincere. "I felt like I had great coaches and great people that actually cared about (me) all along the way," Angle said by phone from Ohio yesterday. "That is from the training staff to the on-field coaches to your strength and conditioning. I...

Patton's role is pending

Patton's role is pending
SARASOTA, Fla. - The Orioles are preparing for their first full-squad workout today, which means players won't take the field until noon. Which means the clubhouse won't open to the media until 11 a.m. - 2 1/2 hours later than usual. Which means I could have slept longer. Manager Buck Showalter arranged another trip to the local movie theatre here on Main St., just as he did last year. Players were treated to another inspirational video, this one including Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis (Hardly...

More notes from Thursday's workout (and Berken update)

More notes from Thursday's workout (and Berken update)
SARASOTA, Fla. - Reliever Jim Johnson threw off a half mound today and will progress to a regular mound on Saturday. Johnson has been receiving treatment for tightness in his lower back, but he appears to be fine. "Everything's good," he said. "I'll be on a full mound Saturday. Riveting stuff." I can appreciate good sarcasm. Zach Britton threw on flat ground again today. "Neither one of them is behind. That's for sure," manager Buck Showalter said of Johnson and Britton. "If...

Berken injures hamstring, Roberts update

Berken injures hamstring, Roberts update
SARASOTA, Fla. - Reliever Jason Berken tweaked his left hamstring today during conditioning drills. Berken had left the facility before reporters returned to the clubhouse and wasn't immediately available for comment. Manager Buck Showalter used the word "tweaked," but added that he wasn't certain of the severity. He was collecting more information from the training staff. "We'll see where that is tomorrow," Showalter said. "I'm not sure if 'tweaked' is the right description yet....

Matusz intent on making 2012 matter

Matusz intent on making 2012 matter
SARASOTA, Fla. - Position players must report to camp today. Third baseman Josh Bell and outfielder Jai Miller arrived this morning. Outfielder Endy Chavez might be the last player to check into the Ed Smith Stadium complex. I haven't seen Steve Tolleson, but one of the reporters here says that he's pretty sure that he spotted the infielder earlier this week. I'm taking his word for it. Brian Matusz threw his second bullpen session yesterday, and his first outdoors in a more structured...

Matt Angle is headed to the Dodgers

Matt Angle is headed to the Dodgers
Outfielder Matt Angle, who was drafted by the Orioles in round seven out of Ohio State in 2007 and made his major league debut last year, is now headed to the Los Angeles Dodgers, an Orioles official confirmed this afternoon. Angle was designated for assignment by the Orioles on Feb. 10 when the club signed Luis Ayala and today he has been claimed by Los Angeles on waivers. In 31 games last year, Angle hit .177 with one homer, seven RBIs, 12 runs and 11 stolen bases in 12 chances. He hit his...

Surveying a negative landscape

Surveying a negative landscape
While my neighbor Terry's yard looks like a plush fairway at Augusta National and, compared to his, mine is like the U.S Open rough, that is not what I'm talking about here. The negative fans among us may be enjoying this time like no other. I get that the Orioles deserve to be bashed for 14 losing seasons, I just don't see the need to focus on it 24-7. Call me crazy, that's just me. * This is from Yahoo! Sports' Orioles 2012 season preview: Reputations in baseball die hard, and few...
