The Orioles today announced that they have released an 80-second anti-bullying video public service announcement (PSA) in support of the It Gets Better Project and the Trevor Project. Produced by Orioles Productions, the video features pitchers Jake Arrieta, Jason Berken, Zach Britton, Kevin Gregg and Mike Gonzalez delivering encouraging messages to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth who are being bullied. The Orioles' message can be viewed at www.itgetsbetter.org/orioles and...
Derrek Lee had four hits and a season-high five RBIs last night. Lee has been on an RBI binge lately. He has eight RBIs in his last seven games and, over his last 16 games, Lee has hit five homers with 17 RBIs. He has five multi-RBI games in that time.
He was batting just .157 on the year with runners in scoring position, but is up to .181 after adding two hits in those situations Tuesday night.
In 11 games since the All-Star break, Lee is batting .318 with two homers, 11 RBIs and an OPS of...
The Orioles couldn't win at Rogers Centre. Now they can't lose.
They've won two straight games in Toronto after losing 16 in a row, proving that baseball really does go in cycles.
I'm just used to the Orioles blowing out a tire.
They'll have Alfredo Simon on the mound tonight, trying to register his third consecutive quality start.
Do you remember Simon's last visit to Rogers Centre on Sept. 26, 2010? He was ejected after drilling Jose Bautista, who left last night's game after being...
Orioles outfielder Luke Scott says via a text message that yesterday's surgery on his right labrum "went well" and provided a clearer explanation why his swing was hindered before the club shut him down for the season.
Renowned orthopedic specialist Dr. James Andrews performed the surgery in Pensacola, Fla.
Scott wrote that he's feeling "so-so, more disappointment than anything, but they fixed the problem."
"It was more posterior than SLAP, which was not revealed as much on the...
Brian Matusz sounds upbeat about the time he is spending with the Triple-A Norfolk Tides. He seems confident that his velocity will come back and remains convinced that he is a big part of the Orioles' future.
Those were some of the impressions I got from an interview Matusz gave on 105.7 The Fan in Baltimore last night. Matusz was a guest on the "Baltimore Baseball Tonight" pregame show with Bob Haynie, Jen Royle and Joe Orsulak.
"It's been a tough year," Matusz said. "Going into this...
I think it's a common sentiment amongst Orioles fans to consider the offense as very poor at turning baserunners into runs on the scoreboard. On multiple, unrelated occasions in recent weeks, I've heard people refer to leaving the bases loaded without scoring a run as "pulling an Orioles."
When I asked people on Twitter what they thought "pulling an Orioles" meant, every O's fan with an actual response said stranding runners. Does the reality match up with these perceptions though?...
Brian Matusz lasted five innings tonight in his fifth start with Triple-A Norfolk since being optioned. He allowed four runs (three earned) and seven hits, with three walks and no strikeouts. He threw 97 pitches, 56 for strikes.
I don't have any radar readings. He's mostly been 87-88 mph in his last few starts, though he's touched 90.
I'm not sure how he avoided giving up a run in the fourth. Brandon Inge doubled and apparently stopped at third base on Clete Thomas' one-out...
The first two Blue Jays reached base against Orioles starter Jake Arrieta in the bottom of the first inning. Yunel Escobar singled and Eric Thames walked.
Instant trouble for Arrieta, but it was a hollow threat. Arrieta retired the next three batters, and the Orioles rewarded him with Derrek Lee's two-run double in the top of the second.
Vladimir Guerrero singled in his first at-bat since coming off the disabled list. Matt Wieters also singled, and Lee followed with a double to left...
As they begin a 10-game road trip with a series at Toronto tonight, road woes still plague the O's.
Consider:
* The Orioles have lost nine straight road series since taking two of three at St. Pete against Tampa Bay from May 13-15. Since then, they are 5-21 and have lost their last seven road games.
* The Orioles actually have a better road winning percentage this year in American League East games (6-10 for .375) then in road games overall (14-30 for .318). The Orioles have most of those...
The Orioles finally made it official.
Vladimir Guerrero has been activated from the disabled list after completing batting practice today at Rogers Centre. To make room for him on the 25-man roster, the Orioles optioned right-hander Mark Worrell to Triple-A Norfolk.
Guerrero is batting cleanup as the designated hitter. He had been on the disabled list since suffering a fractured bone in his right hand on July 10 in Boston.
Guerrero is hitting .279 with seven homers and 31 RBIs in 83...
The Orioles today announced that they have reinstated designated hitter Vladimir Guerrero from the 15-day disabled list and optioned right-hander Mark Worrell to Triple-A Norfolk.
Guerrero, 36, is batting .279 (87-312) with seven home runs and 31 RBI in 83 games for the Orioles this season. He went 1-for-4 on Sunday in a rehab game with Double-A Bowie.
Worrell, 28, pitched to a 36.00 ERA (2.0IP, 8ER) in four games with the Orioles.
Another day brings another roster move for the Orioles.
I've lost count.
Vladimir Guerrero will be activated from the disabled list, and the Orioles are expected to remove a pitcher from their 25-man roster. They've got nine relievers in their bullpen.
I don't like to speculate, but Mark Worrell is a candidate to be designated for assignment. That's my guess.
Luke Scott will undergo surgery this morning to repair a torn labrum. Dr. James Andrews is handling the procedure from his...
Vladimir Guerrero is batting cleanup tonight in Toronto. Still waiting for the Orioles to reveal the corresponding roster move. They have to make sure Guerrero gets through batting practice without any setbacks.
Also, left-hander Michael Gonzalez will start serving his suspension tonight, but he can't be replaced on the roster, so the Orioles must eliminate a player while adding Guerrero.
For the Orioles:
J.J. Hardy SS
Nick Markakis RF
Adam Jones CF
Vladimir Guerrero DH
Matt Wieters C...
In his last major league start, Zach Britton gave up eight runs in the first inning on July 8 at Boston. Last night, pitching for Double-A Bowie at home against Harrisburg, he took a shutout into the fifth inning and then gave up eight runs to that club.
There was an error that hurt his cause, but Britton gave up eight runs (four earned) and eight hits in 4 2/3 with no walks and nine strikeouts. He allowed two homers in that fifth inning before leaving the game.
Orioles director of player...
Decades ago, Major League Baseball was all about the domination of pitchers. Eventually, the league changed the height of the mound and some other rules in order to make baseball more offense-friendly, because that's what fans like to see (I actually prefer pitching duels to offensive shootouts). Those days of pitching dominance are on us again with the likes of Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee and Tim Lincecum. Have you noticed that those pitchers' respective teams - the Philadelphia Phillies and San...
If left-hander Zach Britton is leaving Double-A Bowie, it won't be on a high note.
Britton faced the minimum number of Harrisburg batters through four innings - catcher Derek Norris singled in the fourth, but he was thrown out trying to steal second - before the Senators scored eight runs in the fifth and knocked him out of the game.
Four of the runs were unearned after shortstop Pedro Florimon's two-out error. Bill Rhinehart followed with a three-run homer, and Tyler Moore hit a solo shot....
Outfielder Luke Scott will undergo surgery tomorrow to repair a tear in his right labrum. Dr. James Andrews will perform the procedure in Florida.
Scott played in one game after completing his injury rehab assignment last week. The Orioles shut him down again and returned him to the disabled list.
Scott confirmed the next day that he was done for the season. He had to decide whether to undergo surgery, which could entail a four-to-six month rest and rehab process.
By having the procedure...
Construction has started on a bronze statue of Hall of Fame third baseman Brooks Robinson that will be positioned on the plaza between Washington Boulevard and Russell Street, directly across from the northwest side of Camden Yards.
Henry A. Rosenberg Jr., a friend of Robinson's for more than 30 years, is spearheading the project. The Babe Ruth Birthplace Foundation is providing administrative support and expertise.
In other words, Robinson's glove won't be on his right hand.
The statue...
Single-A Frederick pitcher Bobby Bundy was named the Carolina League's Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season.
In two starts, Bundy was 2-0 with a 0.56 ERA, five hits allowed and 15 strikeouts in 16 innings.
Last night, Bundy held Myrtle Beach to one unearned run and two hits in seven innings.
Bundy, an eighth-round pick in the 2008 draft, also was honored for the week of May 16-22. If this continues, he'll be known as a lot more than Dylan's brother.
Bundy looks like a...
A couple of quick thoughts for an off-day and night. Feel free to leave your comment and/or question.
* Matt Wieters was an All-Star and J.J. Hardy had a great run at bat for a while there and has been stellar at short, but Adam Jones has been the Orioles best player this year.
Over the last nine games, he is batting .333 with five homers and 11 RBIs. His second half OPS is 1.074. He said the other night how he really wants to have a big second half. Buck Showalter has often talked about the...
