NEW YORK – Colton Cowser is on the Orioles’ active roster and expected to be in their lineup for tonight’s game against the Yankees.

The first part is official.

The club announced that it selected Cowser’s contract from Triple-A Norfolk. They also selected reliever Eduard Bazardo’s contract and optioned outfielder Ryan McKenna to the Tides after yesterday’s game.

Catcher Anthony Bemboom and pitcher Chris Vallimont were designated for assignment to clear space on a full 40-man roster.

Cowser, the No. 14 prospect in baseball in MLB Pipeline rankings, is batting .330/.459/.537 with 10 doubles, a triple, 10 home runs, 40 RBIs and 48 walks in 56 games. The fifth-overall selection in the 2021 draft out of Sam Houston State has accumulated 381 plate appearances at Triple-A over two seasons and slashed .292/.420/.500 in 83 games.

The Orioles knew that the bullpen wasn’t equipped to provide length this afternoon. The only decision was which reliever to send down.

Left-hander Bruce Zimmermann was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk this morning, and the Orioles selected Chris Vallimont’s contract.

Nick Vespi was spared after tossing three scoreless innings last night. Zimmermann has pitched three times since Monday, working two innings last night.

Keegan Akin is on the 15-day injured list with lower back discomfort. Cole Irvin is starting Sunday afternoon.

“Definitely needed somebody for the next couple days,” said manager Brandon Hyde. “Hopefully, we can get a couple good starts and get some length out of our starters. But wanted to bring a guy who can give us some innings if we need it, and so we brought Chris here for today.”

The bullpen never rests.

The Orioles made another move this morning, selecting Chris Vallimont’s contract from Triple-A Norfolk and optioning left-hander Bruce Zimmermann.

Reliever Mychal Givens was transferred to the 60-day injured list to create room on the 40-man roster. He’s headed down to Sarasota next week and will pitch in the Florida Complex League after the All-Star break.

Givens hasn’t pitched for the Orioles since making his sixth appearance on May 31. He won’t join them before August.

Vallimont, 26, is waiting to make his major league debut. He’s posted a 5.02 ERA in 22 games with Norfolk, including eight starts.

The threat of severe thunderstorms can’t ruin the Orioles’ home opener this afternoon.

Aaron Judge, maybe, but not thunderstorms.

The temperature in Baltimore reached 85 degrees yesterday but is likely to stay in the 50s today. No rain or hail or high winds, though. Cloudy and playable.

Gates open at noon. Severna Park native Parijita Bastola will perform the national anthem prior to the game. She was a contestant on season 22 of NBC’s “The Voice,” and also performed at Governor Wes Moore’s inauguration earlier this year.

Waiting on Vallimont, O'Hearn and more

GettyImages-1235479580

Another day begins for the Orioles with two players still uncertain where they’re headed. Do they stay or do they go?

Pitcher Chris Vallimont was designated for assignment Jan. 3 after the Orioles acquired first baseman/outfielder Ryan O’Hearn from the Royals for cash considerations. O’Hearn was designated for assignment two days later after the Orioles again claimed first baseman Lewin Díaz off waivers.

An update on Vallimont could come later today since it’s been a week.

The Orioles claimed him off waivers from the Twins on May 25, with left-hander Alexander Wells moving to the 60-day injured list. Vallimont made three starts with Double-A Bowie and allowed one run in 13 innings, and he had a 5.38 ERA and 1.333 WHIP in 16 games (12 starts) with Triple-A Norfolk.

The constant movement with pitchers between the majors and minors couldn’t nudge Vallimont toward the Orioles. His debut remains on hold since the Marlins drafted him in the fifth round in 2018 from Mercyhurst University.

Orioles option Baumann to reduce pitching staff

Hyde Baumann white

Reliever Mike Baumann has been optioned for a third time.

The Orioles sent Baumann to Triple-A Norfolk after yesterday’s game, meeting today’s noon deadline for teams to trim pitching staffs to 13.

Major League Baseball is limiting the number of pitchers, leaving 13 position players on the roster until Sept. 1. The Orioles must make a corresponding move before Tuesday night’s game against the Nationals at Camden Yards.

Per the new collective bargaining agreement, teams can’t option a player more than five times after May 2 or he’s exposed to waivers. Baumann has been optioned twice during this period.

Baumann tossed a scoreless inning yesterday against the Rays, allowing two hits and striking out a batter. He broke camp with the Orioles but hasn’t avoided the shuttle, appearing in seven games and allowing six earned runs (seven total) with 13 hits, six walks and nine strikeouts in 12 innings.

Orioles claim Vallimont off waivers (and other notes)

GettyImages-1235262199

NEW YORK – The constant hunt for pitching has led the Orioles to right-hander Chris Vallimont.

Vallimont was claimed off waivers today from the Twins and optioned to Double-A Bowie.

Room was created on the 40-man roster by transferring pitcher Alexander Wells to the 60-day injured list with a Grade 1 UCL strain.

Vallimont, 25, was designated for assignment on Saturday after making seven appearances (six starts) at Double-A Wichita and posting a 9.95 ERA and 2.684 WHIP in 19 innings. He walked 23 batters and struck out 20.

The Marlins drafted Vallimont in the fifth round in 2018 out of Mercyhurst University and traded him a year later. He’s 13-20 with a 4.94 ERA and 1.431 WHIP in 64 minor league games, only two out of the bullpen.
