The Nationals haven’t won a bunch recently. But when they have won, they’ve won in bunches. In fact, every time they’ve snapped a losing streak since July 12, they’ve followed that first win with another win. And if they can keep that pattern up today, they’ll wind up with a series victory over the Brewers, their second series win over the National League Central leaders in a month. At this point, you’ll take that, right?

Mitchell Parker faced Milwaukee in that previous series at American Family Field, and though the Nats wound up winning the game, his start was a disaster. That’s the day Parker failed to get out of the first inning. And he followed up that start with another short one against the Padres. Fortunately, he bounced back in Arizona with five innings of two-run ball, so he should enter this one feeling better about himself.

The Nationals jumped all over Aaron Civale in the first inning Saturday. They’ll try to do the same today against a brand-new face: Tobias Myers. The 25-year-old rookie has been pretty good for the Brewers, with a 3.10 ERA and 1.143 WHIP in 16 games (15 starts). And he’s allowed two or fewer earned runs in seven of his last nine outings, so the right-hander presents a real challenge today.

It’s Harry Potter Day at Nationals Park, and hopefully one or two of these young wizards know how to cast a spell to prevent it from raining. Otherwise, there’s a decent chance of storms later this afternoon. Fingers crossed they somehow hold off and allow the Nationals and Brewers to play as scheduled at 4:05 p.m. with no interruption.

The Nats, plain and simple, need a win. They’ve dropped five in a row since winning two straight in St. Louis last weekend and now reside at a season-worst 12 games under .500. They were in Friday night’s game, which was tied 3-3 in the sixth before Milwaukee broke things open against the bullpen and made it 8-3.

So it’s up to DJ Herz to keep the Brewers lineup in check. This is his first start against those guys, because he was back at Triple-A Rochester when the Nationals visited Milwaukee before the All-Star break. Herz has been solid since returning to the majors, not to mention eerily consistent. In each of his two starts, he has allowed two runs over five innings while throwing 79 pitches. Davey Martinez would certainly take that again this afternoon, though Herz is welcome to be even better if he likes.

The Nats lineup faces a familiar foe, but one wearing a different uniform: Aaron Civale. The right-hander faced them as a member of the Rays on June 29, giving up two runs on six hits and four walks over 5 2/3 innings. Since then, he’s been traded to the Brewers, for whom he has produced a 4.29 ERA and 1.429 WHIP over four starts.

The Nationals just finished a brutal stretch. Over the last week-plus, they have been no-hit by Dylan Cease, lost back-to-back games in walk-off fashion, suffered a club-worst 17-0 loss, traded away three of their most productive players and been swept twice. Now they enter the dog days of August.

After sweeping the Marlins on June 16, the Nats were one game under .500. Since then, they've gone 14-24 with only three days off, plus the All-Star break. But with yesterday’s day off, they have an off-day in seven of the remaining nine weeks. That hopefully will help them finish the season strong.

What would also help them to start this 10-game homestand is another strong series against the Brewers, against whom the Nats won two of three in Milwaukee right before the break. Jake Irvin, who starts tonight, took the mound in that final game looking for the sweep, but was charged with seven runs (six earned) in four innings while taking a loss. But the right-hander has been solid to start his second half of the season, allowing only four runs with 12 strikeouts over 12 ⅓ innings against the Reds and Cardinals, with the Nats winning both of those games.

Frankie Montas makes his second start against the Nats in the past two weeks, this time as a member of the Brew Crew. The right-hander was traded from the Reds to the Brewers for two players on Tuesday before the deadline. This will be his first start for Milwaukee after the Nats got to him for seven runs in 4 ⅔ innings in his penultimate start with Cincinnati opening the second half.

CLEVELAND – The prospect watch has lost another participant. Coby Mayo officially is in the majors.

The Orioles selected Mayo’s contract today from Triple-A Norfolk, filling the one vacancy on the 40-man roster. Livan Soto was optioned as the corresponding move on the active roster, a day after he was recalled and met with the local media.

Mayo was told yesterday to have his passport overnighted, but he didn’t find out officially about his promotion until his removal from last night’s game in Charlotte. He went 4-for-6, came out in the eighth inning and received the news from manager Buck Britton. He boarded a flight this morning to Cleveland.

The move was inevitable for the No. 3 prospect in the system. Mayo, a fourth-round pick in the 2020 draft, was batting .301 with 22 doubles, two triples, 20 home runs, 61 RBIs and a .961 OPS despite missing a month with a rib injury sustained in a collision with a dugout railing.

Injuries pulled Mayo out of the minors. Jorge Mateo has a dislocated left elbow and Jordan Westburg has a fractured right hand, and their absences will extend deep into September. Mayo can play third base, where Westburg made 64 starts this season. He’s another right-handed bat for a team that wanted to correct its imbalance.

PHOENIX – All right, after all the craziness of the trade deadline, there’s still a game to be played tonight. And the Nationals really need a bounceback performance after Monday’s late-night implosion.

In spite of the last-minute maneuvering Davey Martinez had to make, the lineup exploded for five runs in the top of the first and eight overall during the game. He can only hope for similar results from a group that now includes Juan Yepez, Harold Ramírez and Travis Blankenhorn, who was called up from Triple-A Rochester today to take Lane Thomas’ roster spot.

That group, so successful against Arizona lefty Jordan Montgomery, faces right-hander Ryne Nelson tonight. Nelson has struggled this season to the tune of a 4.85 ERA and 1.414 WHIP over 98 1/3 innings, but he held the Nats to two runs on three hits over seven innings last month in D.C.

Patrick Corbin, meanwhile, returns to his old stomping grounds to face a Diamondbacks lineup he held to one run and three hits over five innings last month. And he’s coming off back-to-back quality starts against the Reds and Padres, even though he took a tough 3-0 loss to San Diego’s Dylan Cease in last week’s no-hitter on South Capitol Street.

Joan Adon joined Blankenhorn from Rochester to take the spot of Dylan Floro, who was traded to the Diamondbacks.

PHOENIX – It’s a dry 109 degrees here in the Valley of the Sun. Guess it’s only appropriate as the trade market heats up. There have been a number of deals made throughout the baseball world today, though nothing involving the Nationals yet. The day is still young, especially out here in the Pacific Time Zone. (Technically, it’s Mountain Standard Time, because Arizona doesn’t do daylight saving, but that’s not important right now.)

The Nationals come to the desert after taking two of three from the Cardinals, missing out on a sweep Sunday afternoon when Dylan Floro gave up a walk-off homer to Paul Goldschmidt in the bottom of the ninth. They’ll look to get this series off on a positive note against the defending National League champs, who have won 10 of their last 14 to get back into the thick of the Wild Card race.

It’s a matchup of left-handers, with Mitchell Parker against Jordan Montgomery. Parker is coming off back-to-back rough and short starts, having totaled 3 2/3 innings against the Brewers and Padres. The Nats simply need much more from him tonight, especially if they make any moves that deplete their bullpen. Montgomery, one of the top free agents last winter who held out forever before finally signing with Arizona, has been really good in three of his last four starts but was roughed up by the Royals for eight runs in 2 2/3 innings in the other.

Update: Lane Thomas is being traded to the Guardians, per a source familiar with the situation. The Nats are getting 19-year-old left-hander Alex Clemmey (Cleveland's No. 8 prospect per MLB Pipeline), 19-year-old shortstop Rafael Ramirez Jr. (No. 22) and 23-year-old infielder Jose Tena (No. 28 per Baseball America).

ST. LOUIS – I’m not sure what the record for most runs scored in consecutive games following a no-hitter is, but I’ve got to believe the 24 runs the Nationals have scored since getting blanked by Dylan Cease has rarely – if ever – been matched. It’s really been quite the wild ride for this team the last few weeks. Would you believe they’ve won seven of their last 11? It doesn’t feel like it, because of the sweep at the hands of the Padres. But they took two of three from the Brewers prior to the All-Star break, then swept the Reds and now have taken the first two from the Cardinals.

The Nationals will go for the sweep without the services of Jesse Winker, who had been one of their most consistent offensive players all year and had taken over the No. 3 spot in Davey Martinez’s lineup. With Winker on his way to New York, Alex Call is on his way to St. Louis, though I wouldn’t expect him to get regular starts at this point. The focus could now shift to Harold Ramírez as the primary DH, and Ramírez came through last night off the bench, going 3-for-3 with three RBIs after replacing Winker.

DJ Herz, last summer’s key trade-deadline acquisition from the Cubs for Jeimer Candelario, gets the ball for the Nats. The rookie left-hander was solid in his return to the majors last week, holding the Padres to two runs over five innings. He faced the Cardinals earlier this month in D.C. and struggled, though, allowing five runs over only 4 1/3 innings, throwing a whopping 102 pitches in the process.

ST. LOUIS – If the Nationals’ response to getting no-hit Thursday was to score 10 runs Friday, what exactly does that mean we should expect tonight out of them? Your guess is as good as mine.

The Nats legitimately had a good night at the plate in the series opener against the Cardinals. It’s not just the 10 runs they scored. It’s the 11 hits, four of which went for extra bases. And it’s the eight walks they drew, a very uncommon total for this swing-happy bunch.

So they’ll look to use the same approach tonight against Kyle Gibson, who faces the Nationals for the second time this month. He managed to give up only three runs in five-plus innings July 7 in D.C., but that came via nine hits and two walks, including three doubles combined by Jesse Winker and Juan Yepez. Speaking of Yepez, he’s now slashing .375/.423/.609 in 17 games since joining the team, consistently providing sorely needed quality at-bats.

The Nationals are facing a familiar foe in Gibson, but the same isn’t true on the flip side. Jake Irvin didn’t pitch against St. Louis in that previous series, so perhaps that plays to his advantage. The right-hander needed a good outing in his return from the All-Star break after a rough stretch to close out an otherwise excellent first half. And he responded with seven innings of two-run, zero-strikeout ball against the Reds, an encouraging sign heading into tonight’s start.

Jorge Mateo has his left elbow in a brace and no further updates on his health.

Mateo suffered a transient dislocation Tuesday in a collision with shortstop Gunnar Henderson during a 6-3 loss to the Marlins. He needs to undergo further testing but the Orioles are waiting for the swelling to go down.

“It was a difficult moment when I saw and felt my arm bend that way,” Mateo said via team interpreter Brandon Quinones. “Yeah, just a difficult moment for me, for the team, for my family.”

Surgery is a possibility but the medical staff is collecting more information.

“We still don’t have anything concrete,” Mateo said. “We’re still waiting for the team to ultimately make a decision and see what happens from there.”

Jordan Westburg and Ryan Mountcastle are on the bench this afternoon and Connor Norby is at second base, as the Orioles continue their series against the Padres.

Colton Cowser is in left field and Heston Kjerstad is the designated hitter.

Adley Rutschman is catching. He’s 8-for-64 (.125) this month.

Anthony Santander, who’s in right field, has hit six home runs in his last eight games and leads the club with 29, one more than his 2023 total.

Cowser has a career-high seven-game hitting streak. He’s 10-for-24 during that stretch.

ST. LOUIS – The Nationals couldn’t have asked for a better start to their homestand. And then they couldn’t have asked for a worse conclusion. They swept the Reds, then they were swept by the Padres, including Dylan Cease’s no-hitter Thursday afternoon. All that just to finish 3-3 for the week.

It’s a new day, though, and the Nats are back on the road, with a six-game trip beginning tonight in St. Louis and extending through Tuesday’s trade deadline in Phoenix.

The Nationals just faced the Cardinals a few weeks ago in D.C., losing three of four, the first of those losses an 11-inning affair. In that game, they jumped all over Sonny Gray for five runs in three innings. Luis García Jr. was the offensive star of the night, going 4-for-5 with a homer, and he’ll hope for similar results in tonight’s rematch with Gray.

Speaking of rematches, MacKenzie Gore gets another crack at the Cardinals after giving up five runs on six hits and five walks in only 3 1/3 innings during that series. That was the first of three subpar outings by Gore, who has totaled only 10 innings in those games while seeing his pitch counts skyrocket. The left-hander hasn’t minced words about his performances. It’s time for him to right the ship, and he knows it.

The good news about today’s early start is that the Nationals can quickly put last night’s 12-3 loss behind them. The bad news is they still have to play the Padres, who they are 0-5 against this season and need to beat this afternoon to avoid a season sweep.

Patrick Corbin will take the mound for this matinee finale. The veteran left-hander was great in his first start of the second half, holding the Reds to one run on three hits and no walks with six strikeouts in six innings on Friday. He also tossed one of his five quality starts this season thus far against the Padres a month ago, holding them to three runs over seven innings with five strikeouts.

That was the only time Corbin has completed seven innings this season, so the Nats are hoping for a repeat today, especially with a depleted bullpen. Corbin is only 2-9 on the season, but a win today would be the 100th of the southpaw’s 12-year career.

Dylan Cease makes his 22nd start of the season for San Diego. The right-hander is 9-8 with a 3.76 ERA, 1.033 WHIP and 11.7 strikeouts-per-nine-innings in his first season as a Padre. He held the Nats scoreless over seven innings of one-run, one-walk ball while striking out 10 in June.

The Nats offense will definitely look for better results against Cease, who is riding a 13-inning scoreless streak entering today’s start.

MIAMI - The Orioles have recalled infielder Connor Norby for the series finale today at Miami and infielder Jorge Mateo goes to the 10-day injured list with a left elbow subluxation. Norby is in the O's lineup today and batting eighth. The move is retroactive to yesterday.

The club also recalled pitcher Bryan Baker and optioned right-hander Chayce McDermott, who started yesterday,  to Triple-A.

A road trip that began with two wins amid promise last Friday in Texas ends this afternoon in Miami with the Orioles looking to reverse a slide.

A slide that has seen them losing three games in a row scoring just eight runs. They have also lost eight of 11 and 10 of their past 15. They are only 11-16 since June 21. 

A loss today and the Orioles would have a four-game losing streak and a pair of five-game losing streaks since June 21.

The Nationals have not fared well against two teams in particular this season. They’re 2-8 against the Mets, and they’re 0-4 against the Padres. Throw out those records – which obviously you can’t do – and they’ve actually gone 45-42 against everybody else in the majors. Which is not bad at all. But one of these days, they’ve got to find a way to beat San Diego, and there are only two games left to do that.

Davey Martinez would love to get a better offensive performance tonight than he got in the opener, when the Nats were shut out for the 11th time this year. That came against unheralded right-hander Randy Vasquez and three relievers. Tonight, it’s Matt Waldron, who enters with better numbers than Vasquez and pitched well against the Nationals just last month at Petco Park, allowing two runs while striking out eight over six innings. (That’s the game that was remembered far more for what happened during a wild 10th inning than anything that happened earlier.)

Mitchell Parker did not pitch in that series, so this will be his first start against the Padres. The rookie left-hander had a breakthrough first half, until a disastrous finale in Milwaukee in which he couldn’t get out of the first inning. A fast and effective start to Parker’s evening this time around is a must.

MIAMI – The Orioles (60-39) play Game No. 100 tonight and begin a three-game series at loanDepot park versus the Marlins (35-65), who have the worst record in the National League.

The O's will face right-hander Kyle Tyler (0-1, 3.38 ERA) with Gunnar Henderson leading off, Ryan O'Hearn batting fourth as the designated hitter and Jorge Mateo hitting ninth at second base.

Albert Suárez (5-3, 2.82 ERA) will be making his 13th start. In the first 12, he is 4-3 with a 3.13 ERA and the Orioles are 7-5 in those games. 

The Birds took two of three at Texas and lead the American League East by 1 1/2 games over the Yankees and seven games over the third-place Red Sox.

Baltimore has won its last four games against Miami going back to late July, scoring at least five runs in each. It is the Orioles’ longest winning streak against the Marlins and the first time they have scored at least five runs in four straight against them.

The Nationals couldn’t have asked for a better start to their second half, sweeping the Reds over the weekend in impressive fashion. Now they’ll have to try to keep it going against a team that recently swept them.

The Padres are in town, and it was only four weeks ago when they won three straight against the Nationals during a wild series in San Diego that ruined a lot of positive momentum they had built up earlier in June.

One of those games at Petco Park was started by DJ Herz, who makes his return to the big leagues tonight after officially getting recalled from Triple-A. (Reliever Eduardo Salazar was optioned to Rochester to clear up that roster spot.) Herz essentially got a 16-day break since he last pitched up here, making only one abbreviated start for Rochester to keep his arm fresh. It will be fascinating to see how the rookie left-hander returns, and whether he can find some level of more consistency than he showed in his first stint.

Right-hander Randy Vasquez is tonight’s opponent, and he will be a new face from the Nationals’ perspective, nobody on the current roster having faced him before. There will be a few ex-Padres in the lineup, though, with some extra motivation against the franchise that traded them. How will James Wood and CJ Abrams handle this assignment?

The Nationals have already won back-to-back series. Now they have a shot at a rare series sweep if they can beat the Reds again in this afternoon’s finale.

Though they’ve somehow managed to win a pair of games in the last week in which their starter didn’t even reach the third inning, that’s probably not a formula for sustained success. So it would behoove Jake Irvin to be good today, and to give his team some length so Davey Martinez doesn’t have rely too heavily on a bullpen that’s already worn down only two games into the second half of the season.

Irvin is coming off back-to-back rough starts, though, which took some of the luster off his breakthrough first half. The right-hander’s issue in those games against the Mets and Brewers: He was hit hard, to the tune of 13 runs on 18 hits over 10 innings. That was a pretty stark drop-off after back-to-back starts in which he surrendered only one hit.

The Nationals face another left-hander today in Andrew Abbott. He’s been solid in 40 career starts, but the Nats did get to him for six runs in 5 2/3 innings last August in Cincinnati. The University of Virginia alum has walked 22 batters over his last 37 1/3 innings, so patience is a virtue against him this afternoon.

Though it got way more interesting in the top of the ninth than it needed to be, the Nationals’ 8-5 victory over the Reds on Friday night was a very good way for them to open the second half of the season. They got sustained offense, including a pair of home runs from two positions where they’ve desperately needed more offense. They got a very good start out of Patrick Corbin. And they actually supported him for a change and earned him his first win since May 10.

Now there’s an opportunity to clinch a weekend series win and really get the second half to a positive start. It starts with MacKenzie Gore, who needs some positive performances himself right now. The left-hander allowed four or more runs in four of his last five starts, turning a 3.26 ERA into a 4.01 ERA at the break. He’s got to be more efficient and give himself a chance to go deep in the game, especially after the Nats used five relievers to pull off Friday’s win.

The Nationals lineup faces the Reds’ Nick Lodolo, who put together a very solid first half of his own, going 8-3 with a 3.33 ERA and 1.123 WHIP. The left-hander is facing the Nats for only the second time in his career, and the previous start took place back in 2022, when he allowed three runs over seven innings to a lineup that included a top four of César Hernández, Joey Meneses, Luke Voit and Nelson Cruz. Not a lot to be drawn from that performance.

ARLINGTON, Texas – Corbin Burnes follows his scoreless first inning in Tuesday’s All-Star Game at Globe Life Field with tonight’s start against the Rangers that begins the second half.

Burnes made his first career start against the Rangers on June 27 at Camden Yards and held them to one run with nine hits over seven innings. Adolis García homered off Burnes.

According to STATS, Burnes is the only pitcher in the modern era with a career WHIP under 1.00 on the road in a minimum 50 starts. His WHIP is 0.99.

Colton Cowser is in left field tonight and Cedric Mullins is in center. Jorge Mateo is the second baseman and Jordan Westburg is at third.

Adley Rutschman (59) and Anthony Santander (58) had at least 55 RBIs at the break, just the third pair of switch-hitting teammates to do it after Cleveland’s José Ramírez and Francisco Lindor in 2019 and Carlos Baerga and Eddie Murray in 1994, according to STATS.

Welcome to the unofficial second half of the 2024 season! Hope everyone enjoyed the All-Star break (was it really a break, though?) and is ready to get back to baseball. The Nationals ended the first half at 44-53 after taking two of three from the Brewers in Milwaukee. Although they are fourth in the National League East and six games out of a wild card spot, they are five games better than they were through 97 games last year.

The Nats will begin the second half like they did the first half: against the Reds.

Patrick Corbin makes the first start of the second half for Davey Martinez’s club. Through his 19 first-half starts, the left-hander went 1-9 with a 5.57 ERA. Corbin, who turns 35 today, was charged with four runs in 4 ⅓ innings against the Reds in the second game of the season, which the Nats eventually won 7-6.

Frankie Montas opposes the birthday boy for the Reds. The veteran right-hander went 4-7 with a 4.38 ERA in 17 first-half starts. He pitched six shutout innings against the Nats in an Opening Day win. But this will be a very different lineup than the one Montas faced back in March, with Joey Meneses, Joey Gallo and Eddie Rosario not in it.
