The Orioles will join our nation in recognizing National Gun Violence Awareness Day on Friday, June 3. As part of the recognition, the Warehouse will be illuminated in orange, all uniformed personnel will wear orange jerseys throughout the weekend, and all online and in-store sales from Orioles Authentics will benefit Moms Demand Action. The Orioles Charitable Foundation will match 100 percent of Orioles Authentics sales from the weekend.

The Orioles swapped out pitchers again today, recalling Denyi Reyes from Triple-A Norfolk and optioning left-hander Zac Lowther.

Lowther threw 100 pitches last night in 5 1/3 innings. Reyes was the 27th man for Saturday’s doubleheader in Boston, allowing one run in 3 2/3 innings in Game 2, and remained eligible to be recalled in fewer than 10 days.

Lowther was the first Orioles reliever last night to throw at least 100 pitches since Gabriel Ynoa on May 5, 2017.

Adley Rutschman is on the bench tonight as the Orioles continue their series against the Mariners. He’s 7-for-39 in 10 games.

García to be everyday shortstop with Escobar on IL

NEW YORK – The Nationals waited the last two months for Luis García to prove to them he was ready to be called back up to the big leagues. But sometimes other developments force the issue, and when Alcides Escobar injured his right hamstring during Tuesday night’s loss to the Mets, the organization knew it was time to promote their 22-year-old infielder.

García was officially recalled from Triple-A Rochester this morning, with Escobar placed on the 10-day injured list with a right hamstring strain that’s not serious enough to sideline him long-term but was significant enough to sideline him for a little while.

“He said he was still sore. And the position he plays, it’s tough to play when your hamstring is bothering you,” manager Davey Martinez said prior to today’s series finale against the Mets. “We decided the best thing to do is just let it heal, let it get right. Hopefully it only takes 10 days, 12 days, but we’ll see where he’s at.”

The Nationals could’ve called up a short-term replacement for Escobar, such as utility infielder Lucius Fox. But García has long been considered a potential long-term part of the organization’s rebuilding plan, and his performance over the last two months at Triple-A – most notably a .314/.368/.531 offensive slash line – convinced the team’s decision makers the time was right to promote him.

“It made sense, because we have a shortstop on the (IL),” general manager Mike Rizzo said. “We thought he was very close, and when Escobar went down it made it a fairly simple decision to make.”

Nationals select the contract of Jordan Weems and recall Francisco Perez

The Washington Nationals announced the following roster moves on Tuesday. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcements.

· Selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Jordan Weems
· Recalled left-handed pitcher Francisco Perez from Triple-A Rochester
· Optioned right-handed pitcher Andres Machado to Triple-A Rochester
· Designated right-handed pitcher Austin Voth for assignment

Weems, 29, went 2-1 with six saves and a 3.38 ERA in 19 games for Triple-A Rochester. He struck out 32 batters and walked just five in 24.0 innings pitched. His six saves ranked second among Nationals Minor Leaguers. In 11 outings dating to April 30, Weems struck out 23 batters while walking just two in 14.1 innings pitched.

Weems has appeared in 16 Major League games across two seasons with the Oakland Athletics (2020-21) and Arizona Diamondbacks (2021). He made his Major League debut with Oakland in 2020, pitching to a 3.21 ERA (5 ER/14.0 IP) with 18 strikeouts in nine games.

Perez, 24, joins the Nationals for his third Major League stint this season. He has pitched to a 2.51 ERA with 21 strikeouts, four walks and a .189 opponents’ batting average in 15 games for Triple-A Rochester this season.

Florida pitcher Ricky Nolasco singled with two outs to score Brett Hayes and give the Marlins a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Once again, Guthrie got into trouble after retiring the first two batters, including a strikeout of Gaby Sanchez. Hayes doubled off the left field fence and Nolasco bounced a single into left field. O's game blog: The Tampa Bay series begins

wells-tyler-throwing-white

After producing the walk-off win Thursday afternoon against the New York Yankees, the Orioles host the Tampa Bay Rays today in the opener of a three-game series and continuation of a seven-game homestand.

After back-to-back one-run losses to New York, the Orioles (15-24) salvaged the series finale Thursday 9-6 on Anthony Santander’s three-run shot. It was his seventh homer of the season and first career walk-off hit.

The game marked the first walk-off home run by an Oriole since Rio Ruiz hit a game-ending longball off Roberto Osuna on Aug. 11, 2019, versus Houston. It was the Baltimore’s third walk-off victory of the season, with all three coming against American League East foes - two against the Yankees and one against the Red Sox.

According to Elias Sports Bureau, Santander, with two doubles a homer in that game, is the third Oriole to record three extra-base hits, including a walk-off home run, in a single game, joining Randy Milligan (2-2B, HR) on June 12, 1990, against Milwaukee and Manny Machado (3 HRs) on Aug. 18, 2017, versus the Los Angeles Angels. And Santander is the first major league player to record such a game since Alex Verdugo (2-2B, HR) did so with the Los Angeles Dodgers on June 22, 2019, versus Colorado.

In the month of May, Trey Mancini has batted .377/.441/.492 (23-for-61) and ranks among AL leaders in OBP (2nd), batting average (4th), and hits (T-5th). For his career, Mancini owns a line of .282/.352/.462 with 40 extra-base hits, 60 runs scored and 65 RBIs in 118 May games. Mancini has hit safely in 14 of 16 games this month, including producing multiple hits in seven of them, and on the season, he leads the team and ranks tied for sixth in the AL with 12 multi-hit games.
